Microsoft confirms limited edition black XBOX 360 Elite

March 28, 2007

Microsoft confirms limited edition black XBOX 360 EliteThe much anticipated and rumored XBOX 360 Elite is now a reality. Microsoft has officially announced the newest revision to the XBOX 360 Line. As postulated earlier, the XBOX 360 Elite will launch with a limited edition black version.

The XBOX 360 Elite will include HDMI outputs and a 120GB hard drive as well as support for IPTV. The Black XBOX 360 Elite includes a black controller, black XBOX Live headset and the console itself has somewhat of a mix of a glossy black and matte black coating.

Current owners of the XBOX 360 Premium will be able to purchase the 120GB hard drive as a $180 accessory. But really, what’s the point if you aren’t getting the glory of the HDMI output for that brand new HDTV.

We can now count Microsoft as seriously positioning the XBOX 360 as both an entertainment hub and gaming console. Much like Sony has done with the PS3. The only thing Microsoft needs to do is incorporate the HD-DVD drive and WiFi in the XBOX 360 Elite and they would be all set, or are they saving that for the next revision?

Microsoft hopes that the new larger hard drives will encourage users to purchase more movies and games from XBOX Live and as we all know, that requires some serious hard drive space. The XBOX 360 Elite will be hitting store shelves in April with a price of $479. After all the limited edition black models have sold they will switch over to the standard white Elite model with the same features while discontinuing the premium offering.

John Rodman, a product manager for the XBOX and XBOX live was quoted as saying, “We don’t feel like the Wii customer and the Xbox customer are the same thing, we think that as soon as the Wii customer turns 14 they want something else.” Oh, I agree with that, I do indeed agree with that.

What isn’t clear is if the black XBOX 360 will continue production or if it will be replaced with a white model. It would be cool to have a black XBOX 360 and a white XBOX 360 available any time you want them. I wonder what other company did that.

The XBox Elite will not “replace” any of the two existed models – they are simply adding a third model to the XBox line-up. The XBox Elite is not a “limited edition.”

I believe that’s exactly what I said. What isn’t clear is if the black version will continue production or will be replaced with a white version at some point. Also, it has been conjectured that the Premium system will be discontinued and replaced with the Elite system. If you had bothered to read the first link or carefully read this post, you might have seen that.

    I actually considered getting one…

I don’t understand why Microsoft does not want to go the whole way and build it with a HD HDD. Okay, it might get more expensive. But since so many are asking for it, can’t MS see that it would sell? I havn’t buy a 360 yet because I am waiting and hoping MS would bring out a Special Edition Halo 3 Xbox 360 for when Halo 3 comes out.

That would set the crown on the King: Playing Halo 3 from the Legendary Edition on a Special Edition Halo 3 Xbox 360. Sounds good dosn’t it?

    Count me in!

Now there’s an idea, Halo 3 “Legendary Edition” packaged with a special edition Halo 3 XBOX 360… now that would be awesome. Don’t forget the HDDVD drive!

MS will not intorduce a HD drive built into the xbox 360 because of the battle between blue ray and HD. The way they set it up, if Blue ray wins -so what they intorduce an external Blue ray drive much like the HD drive. but if HD wins Sony’s PS3 gets screwed and MS wins with the already external HD drive. So quit whining, if there was a built in HD drive for the 360 that is just one more thing that can and probably will go wrong. However i am looking foward to a Halo Special Edition 360. After the Original halo xbox, they pretty much have to…
