Electronic Arts extends Lord of the Rings license
Videogame company Electronic Arts (EA) has announced they will continue making Lord of the Rings game after they reached an agreement with New Line Cinema and Tolkien Enterprises.
EA was granted the rights to the Lord Of The Ring (LOTR) videogames based on the trilogy of books by Tolkien, in accordance with an agreement with the Saul Zaentz Co. d/b/a Tolkien Enterprises, in addition to a separate agreement that allows for games based on the New Line Cinema films.
Previously, Vivendi Universal Games had separately licensed the right to use the Tolkein books from the Saul Zaentz Company, a situation which led to competing LOTR games being released at the time the first movie debuted. However, Vivendi’s titles, which included a game based on The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit, failed to garner either critical or consumer appeal.
According to Frank Bibeau, EA’s executive vice president and general manager of North American publishing, “The Lord of the Rings is an incredible canvas to create epic games. We look forward to our next project with New Line Cinema and Tolkien Enterprises scheduled to ship in 2008.”
New Line Cinema is just as excited about their extended ventures.
“We have a long history of making great games with EA and are thrilled to extend our longstanding relationship,” said David Imhoff, New Line’s senior executive vice president of worldwide licensing and merchandising. “We look forward to working closely with EA to create even more compelling Lord of the Rings adventures in the future.”
The company has been producing interactive titles around the filmed adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary works since 2001. Existing EA LOTR games are available for PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Game Boy Advance.
With EA and New Line Cinema’s continued partnership, gamer sure have a lot to look out for in new games that will be developed based on the LOTR books and movies.
Although EA isn’t revealing any details on this new 2008 title as of yet, the company says it will soon be releasing information about an all-new ‘The Lord of the Rings’ game.
