Nintendo STARS anticipate Resident ‘Wii’vil launching this Summer
After many predictions and numerous rumors, Capcom has finally announced their plans to release Resident Evil 4 the Wii, which will contain features exclusive to Wii owners. In addition, Capcom will be releasing an entirely new version of Resident Evil, The Umbrella Chronicles, for the Wii on a later date.
Resident Evil 4, the sixth installment of this video game series, originally debuted for the Nintendo GameCube and was later brought to the Playstation 2 and PC; this highly successful game sold over 300,000 copies in the first 15 days of launch, and has sold over 30 million games in the series to date.
“Resident Evil has become one of the premier franchises in the games industry, with more than 30 million RE games sold around the world,” said Jack Symon, director, product marketing, Capcom Entertainment.
The new Wii-dition of RE4 is expected to arrive this Summer with RE: The Umbrella Chronicles at an later, unspecified date. Both versions will take advantage of the Wii’s hardware, such as the Wiimote and Nunchuck, which has enabled Capcom to include a type of gameplay in RE that could not be achieved on other consoles.
Symon added, “The innovative controller functionality of the Wii will allow us to design innovative, original game play never before seen in a Resident Evil game. With RE4, we’re challenging the Wii hardware to meet Resident Evil, while in The Umbrella Chronicles, we’re adapting Resident Evil to the innovations of the Wii.”
The new content that was added to the PS2 release of RE4, such as the five chapter mini-game, documentary, new costumes, laser gun weapon, movie browser, and “amateur” mode will also be included in the RE4 Wii Edition.
The Umbrella Chronicles will contain content from the first four installments of the series including additional content not seen in any previous versions such as The Umbrella Corporation’s stronghold and entirely different enemies to combat.
The Japanese site for The Umbrella Chronicles went live on Sunday and contains a 30 second sneak-peek into the next installment of the Resident Evil series.
