Sony US officially kills 20GB PS3 due to poor demand - good riddance!
By John Pospisil
When the 20GB PS3 started disappearing from retailers’ shelves in the US we started to wonder whether this was a sign that the 20GB model’s days were numbered. Now it’s official. Sony has withdrawn the 20GB model from the US market, citing a lack of demand as a reason for the decision.
The 20GB model was never made available in Australia or Europe.
“At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base,” said spokes person, Dave Karraker of Sony America.
“Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America.”
Karracker said that Sony would focus its efforts of the more capable 60GB model.
“In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.”
Obviously Sony was trying to make the PS3 somewhat more accessible by offering cheaper version. But lets face if you’re going to shell out for a next generation games console, the last thing you’re going to do is buy the cheaper version. Good riddance I say.

Wow what a surprise, as a matter of fact I live in the US and I have never even seen a 20gb model for sale in a store. If I had maybe I’d have bought one. I wonder if the true reason was because Sony was loosing more money on the cheaper model… who ever wrote this story is either uneducated or a Sony pawn. Good riddance to a more affordable blue ray player! Idiot.
