Sony’s plan to save the PS3 - cut jobs
By John Pospisil
Sony Computer Entertainment is planning to cut its Eurpoean workforce by up to 160 jobs (around 8% of its total workforce).
According to a company spokesperson, Nanako Kato, this move will streamline operations and improve the company’s competitiveness. Other regions may also be “streamlined”.
“We decided to streamline the company and also streamline some of the positions … to reshuffle the company a little more to have more competitiveness,” she told Agence France-Presse.
Kato stressed that no concrete decisions have yet been made and that some positions will be eliminated through a hiring freeze, rather than layoffs.
Sony is said to loose around US$240 for every 60GB PS3 sold and around US$300 for every 20GB PS3 sold.
As we all know, in the business world ”streamlining” means “cutting costs”, which companies generally start doing when they’ve simply run out of ideas.

Where do you get your fact from about Sony losing money on the PS3? Some other website claiming the same junk? Since cutting out the EE/GS chip in the PS3, Sony is _making_ money on the PS3 - look at the profit forcasts for Sony’s next quarter. They can’t be making money on the PS3 next quarter if they are losing half of the retail value on the thing? God Im sick of this complete media fanboy bs… do some homework.

Does anyone else notice that the first post to all these stories is from a Sony fan (read employee). Then nearly every ither post afterwards is in agreement with the article. It sure does feel like Sony have a department devoted to replying first to blog/new posts and claiming ’shoddy journalism’ or something of the like.
Sony IS still making a loss on the PS3. They’re making profit on the game sales.

[...] With Sony in a state of malaise over the launch of the PS3, and loosing money on every PS3 sold (and complaining about it), the question Sony has to answer first, is not “what is the future of the PlayStation franchise”, but “does the PlayStation franchise have a future?” Share and Enjoy: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages.
