Wii creams Xbox 360 and PS3 in the US
By John Pospisil
US sales figures from market research company NDP Group show that the Wii continues to dominate sales of next generation consoles.
Sales information for March 4 to April 7 showed that 259,000 Wiis were sold, compared to 199,000 Xbox 360s and 130,000 Playstation 3s.
Nintendo also did well overall, selling more than 508,000 Nintendo DS units. Sony’s aging, and now relatively cheap, Playstation 2, sold 208,000 units.
Hardware sales jumped 59% to $370 million dollars over the same period last year, which is no doubt a function of the new hardware now on offer.
Software sales also grew; up 15% to $574 million compared to the same period last year. Guitar Hero II was the biggest selling game.

The Wii isn’t a competitor to either MS or Sony, they’ve effectively taken themselves out of the industry and created a new industry very much more in thinking with Nintendo. Cute games, gameplay, innovation. Mainly selling their own games and hardware.
Why do I say this, look at the sales figures for the games. Wii is lagging far behind. Why? Because those casual gamers don’t buy enough games to keep third party developers interested and kids will only be playing Nintendo until they’re 10.
MS and Sony are fighting this one, and it’s for not just games but IPTV (TV on demand) and even the internet however MS won’t want this too much as that will limit their Windows business (hench no browser on 360).
But let’s talk about games, once GTA4 and Halo3 comes out. It will force everyone to “upgrade” to the new consoles. Until those killer apps come out you can’t really say if it will or won’t be a success… btw - they will either be a success or the games industry is dead.
My money is still on MS.
