Pedophiles get a Second Life, while not having a first
Prosecutors in Germany have started to investigate anonymous members of the virtual world Second Life after a German TV news magazine, Report Mainz, uncovered a virtual child sex pornography ring, where users would pay Linden Money, Second Life’s version of Cash, to see pornographic images of children and buy sex with other players who pose as children using ’skins’ or ‘avatars’ in a virtual sexual practice known as ageplay.
The only problem the prosecutors face is the fact that they are investigating an unknown person. “We are trying to find out the identity of this person,” chief prosecutor Peter Vogt from the Central Office against Child Pornography told German television. “I am lost for words. What is being offered is nothing short of child pornography.”
The reporter with the German TV show said he was “shocked” to see the groups had invited him to see the child pornography at a cost of 500 Lindens, and later offered to direct him towards their child pornography sources.
This comes shortly after a comScore study which reports that over 6 million user accounts have been created in Second Life, 60% + which are male, and noted that Germany has the highest amount of active residents.
“We will find out who is behind this, and then inform the police,” said Robin Harper, the deputy president of Linden Lab. Much controversy is being raised in the community as a result of this behavior on Second Life.
“I assume we are going to catch this user fairly quickly,” said Vogt, as this crime, in Germany, is punishable from three months to five years in a real prison, not a virtual one.
