Xbox 360 boss lashes out against Wii: it can’t play DVDs
The president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, Robbie Bach (pictured), has lashed out against Nintendo’s Wii games console, criticizing the console’s weak graphics, lackluster performance and lack of DVD video playback. He also predicted that games developers would not be able to develop hard-core games for the Wii.
Speaking to eWeek, Bach couldn’t hide his contempt for Nintendo’s ludicrously successful Wii:
“…the video graphics on it aren’t very strong; the box itself is kind of underpowered; it doesn’t play DVDs; there are a lot of down-line components (that) aren’t actually that interesting,” said Bach.
He did concede however that the Wii controller was pretty cool:
“The controller is pretty intuitive and the game experience is pretty simple, and Nintendo can produce a lot of those simple game experiences themselves.”
Bach said that games developers won’t support the Wii because they can’t make money out of it, and because the Wii doesn’t have the grunt required for hard-core games.
“Third parties aren’t going to make much money on this platform because Nintendo is going to make all that money,” explained Bach.
“Their ability to compete with something like a Halo or produce an experience like Madden on their system is going to be tough. They don’t have the graphics horsepower that even Xbox 1 had.”
Ouch!
Still, while we’d expect Bach to hold these views, it’s surprising that he’s so open about them. Could it be that Microsoft is a little jealous of Nintendo’s amazing success with the Wii, in both the US and Japan?

this is completly ludicrous. who cares if the wii can play dvds? I own four dvd players and do not need another. Furthermore, I had gotten bored with Madden and the new control scheme made the game much more fun for to play so don’t tell me that the Wii can not do Madden. His comments are just the raving lunacies of a deranged jealous mind. That and he is probalbly talking to third party developers and trying to keep them from further devolping for the wii.

The CPU in the Wii is a little more powerful than that of the original Xbox, and the GPU is also more powerful. The Wii is more powerful than the original Xbox, but not by much.

I wish game companies would just say something honest like ‘The wii is doing well? Good, but we’re more concerned with our own quality of software and hardware, so let’s talk about the 360.” It seems a lot of people here just get all hot and horny over a company man doing or saying anything that a normal person.
I have a Wii and two 360’s I enjoy both of them very much. I am tired of the ‘console” wars, but even more tired of these low life ignorant children eating it up and spitting out trash talk like they’re some sort of authority. Most you you negative posters are worthless individuals with nothing to contribute to the world so you just jump on people who actually make something for the rest of us to enjoy.

well, it’s as simple as the fact that the wii isn’t really created specifically for the hardcore gamer. look at the commercials for it, it’s marketed to everyone. it’s a way to get your mom or sister or grandpa to understand why you love your games so much. as that kind of console, it doesn’t have to be high powered or have amazing graphics. or even have 3rd party games. i just don’t think that’s part of nintendo’s marketing mix. it’s silly to really compare them, they’re completely different. i love my wii, i love my 360, and i love my ps3 all for different reasons.

Nintendo is making a profit on each system they sell. The point was not to make a graphically superior machine with a dvd, etc. I didn’t buy it because of the graphics. I bought it because it was fun.

Why did you not mention Europe? I mean the sales in Europe are set to Eclipse that of America and Japan soon. England alone has sold 500,000 Wii consoles. DS has sold more Units in Europe than America and catching up to Japan.

many wii fans are ripping into other systems saying that its stupid to charge for a dvd player in a console and that its a waste of money because they already own a dvd player. Point taken, but these consoles already have a dvd reader because, surprise, the games are written on dvds. It already has the capabilities to read dvds. xbox, xbox360, and ps2 owners are not paying an additional $50+ for a dvd player they wont use. They are spending it so they wont have 8 disks for a single game.

I don’t see why you guys get so worked up over this stuff. The 360 and PS3 are in competition. The Wii is competing against the PS2. It’s not a “next gen” platform, it’s just a new one. If they sell a Trillion of their consoles, the Next-Gen/This Gen race is between Sony and Microsoft. The DS sells great and who would dare put it in the same category as a PS3? That same holds true here. The Wii is fun and it’s selling well but it’s selling in a different market.

For a guy whose DIVISION has burned more than 20 BILLION DOLLARS in development still having a net loss of $5 BILLION I would think he’d have bigger things to worry about than trashing a company that actually knows how to MAKE MONEY on hardware and software. When his division if ever manages to see a profit, then I’ll take his advice about how nobody can make money on a Nintendo system.
Coming from a guy who’s division has NEVER MADE A DIME IN PROFIT, he clearly knows nothing of profits and for him to speak that others can’t make it on another system is comical.
SONY knows how to make money on Video Gaming, Nintendo knows how to make money on Video Gaming… MS knows how to burn a lot of money on video games.. Listening to you about profits is comical.
Go back to Redmond and bury yourself in the MS dillusion.

it is the best thing since sliced bread (well maybe not THE best, but you get the picture) i have so much fun playing zelda-slicing then foos with my Master Sword
Call of Duty 3 (although the Xbox 360’s graphics are a litttle better for this game, sorry) fighting off the german soldier when he takes a hold of your rifle, driving around in the jeep, being able to chuck the grenades back to the enemy

2. I know some people had it worse but i had to wait a good long week and a half maybe, i then had to go to 2 toys r us and 1 target, but i ended up getting it at my third toys r us
when i first opened and hooked it up…it felt a kid at christmas time opening my presents only to find the SNES (u guys know what im talking about)

3. Connecting to the internet is the only problem i would have to say
i dont really see why it couldnt have been easier like it is with the 360.
with the 360 you just take the ethernet cable and hook the mother to the back of your pc or wireless router etc, but then again you have to buy that membership in order to go online and play online
with the wiii, i have still yet to buy a LAN adapter cuz i cant use the wi-fi USB cuz i gots vista and the usb is only compatible with XP
but being able to buy classic games like ocarina of time, starfox 64, sonic the hedgehog…its pretty badass
and thats all i have to say about that

What´s the problem with the DVD player? My PC got a 20 dollars dvd unit, I watch DVD with it, and a plus: I burn DVD with it. I can plug in a controller, so I can play PC games, many of the 360´s games (multi plattform games), and emulate the ps1 and ps2 games. But still, I can´t even approach to a wii on my PC. Wii´s not powerful, Wii´s unique. Shut up, 360.
