A PS3 Comeback in 2008?

By David Cassel

A PlayStation Comeback in 2008?Analysts have one question about the sales for the PlayStation 3. Are they dead — or just resting? Today an analyst predicted that PS3 sales will take off next year as the console’s cutting-edge technology finally finds an audience.

“The PlayStation 3 is ahead of the market,” argues analyst Billy Pidgeon, from International Data Corporation (pictured). He tells the Los Angeles Times that the PlayStation will start catching its rivals in 2008 because the Xbox and Wii were just “designed for immediate market impact.”

Sony agrees, of course, telling the paper that they’re in it for the long haul and “We didn’t get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007.” Sony president Jack Tretton insists that “we’re into this for the next 10 years and beyond.”

But not everyone can wait that long, according to Kyoshi Shin of Japan’s International Game Developers Association. Developers are already leaving the PlayStation, he tells the Times — because they’d rather be developing for the Wii. He says console owners now complain that the PS3 is “like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat.”

The problem is that the ahead-of-the-market technology comes with an ahead-of-the-market price. Even Pidgeon concedes there’s no compelling reason to upgrade from a PS2 to a PS3. So besides facing competition from the cheaper Wii and XBox consoles, the PlayStation 3 also has to compete with…The PlayStation 2.

Ps3 was designed as next-gen game console that will suite game developers & hardcore gamers, and what’s PS3 experinecing now is natural because this machine still expensive even with the value of techs that offered to the consumers & game developer. Definitely, most of game developers go with XBOX & Wii and this is because more coverage & distribution unlike PS3 is still limited to few millions. What I believe is a matter of time for PS3 to comeback & lead the market again like before with PS2.

Is this the same analyst who said the PS3 would sell like crazy, the same analyst who has lots of Sony shares, get a life, the PS3 is dead, just like Sony.

    3. Stiby:

With other analysis predicting Wii shortages till 2009 a 2008 come back may be too little too late. PS3 is dependent on blu-ray demand to sell consoles unfortunatly it took 3-5 years before DVD took off and based on that the come back would have to be in 2010 by which time the next gen XBox and Nintendo consoles will be on the horizon all boasting HD playback learning from Sony PS2 DVD playback success.

    4. D.Vader:

Well said Qais Al-Khateeb. Blu-Ray is already showing very early signs of being the dominant factor. No matter what Xbox Fanboy wants to say the larger capacity drive is needed to house the high-definition textures and new technology.

Dario - you obviously are a fanboy. PS3 is FAR from dead. Much is on the horizon, PS3 still has the lead in exclusive titles. The 360 is almost half way through it’s life cycle (if we go by Xbox as the standard). The Playstation brand in general is still the leader. Your bitter assessment provides NO evidence and is wishful thinking.

Stiby Wii is a great inexpensive machine. Let’s just hope the actually get some games out for the console that are good. Red Steel was a huge blow to the console. It showed that it might be harder for some games to translate to the odd control scheme. In a year or so that Wii will already be showing it’s age when PS3 hit’s it’s stride. Not including Hi-Def in the WII was a HUGE mistake.

by 2010 the rate of hidef tys would just have reached almost 50% so it isn’t that important

    7. geekygirl23:

Ahahaha Vader is a completely moronic fanboy. PS3 has nothing to be hopeful about, MS and Nintendo have tons. PS3 does not have a lot of exclusive titles since many developers jumped ship. Halo 3 ships around November and will boost 360 sales a ton. XBox live is far superior to anything and everything else. As soon as Sony starts picking up steam MS will reduce the price and gain more ground. MS will be releasing tools to let developers port games to PC or vice versa so easily that they can double sales with a tiny bit of extra work. Sony has NOTHING going for it, and PS3 will be the downfall of their gaming department.

    8. PENIX:

PS3 is the best because it is clearly the most powerful. It is so powerful that they are using it to CURE CANCER! Do you see the Suxbox360 or WiiWii doing that? Hell no, cuz they are too weak. If you buy anything other than PS3 you deserve to die of cancer for being so stupid.

    9. Pats:

Remember NeXT from Steve Jobs … years ahead of time, and ultimately got nowhere. I guess being too ahead of time is not such a good thing either - unless you are ready to take your losses till the time is right

Sony is already losing money on this - but they have to lose a lot more if they want to make an impact “Right here - Right now”

    10. FF-13:

      When ff-13 comes is the time were i get a ps3 :D

    12. PS3Dude:

XBOX 360 is outselling PS3 because Xbot fanboy keep upgrading their machines because they either break, or they realize they want the HD drive or the hard drive after all. 360 is a sub par piece of hardware that over the long run will be beat out by the PS3. The Wii is last generation technology that eventually people will tire of once fads like Wii fit have come and gone. And other than Gears and Halo 3, PS3 has more interesting exclusives on the way. The PS3 will be fine.
