Sega injects Unreal 3 engine power to next-gen market
By Triston McIntyre
Sega, overlord of gaming titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star Universe, Virtua Tennis, and lets not forget, Ecco the Dolphin, has just signed a deal with Epic, the creators of the Unreal 3 Engine, buying usage rights for forthcoming projects. Just imagine, within a very short time we might see Marcus Fenix in a mini skirt, serving it up to Serena Williams, or even better…riding along with Ecco!
Just kidding, but seriously; this deal for Sega, which was finalized this past Wednesday, could elevate Sega to a position of true competitiveness in the fast-paced gaming arena. Vice President of Epic, Mark Rein, said, “SEGA has a long history of innovation and leadership in our industry and we’re honored that they’ve chosen to use Unreal Engine 3.”
Though Virtua Fighter 5 has already flooded the market with all that fighting goodness, you can probably expect to see the next renditions marked by the fluidity, detail, and general jaw-dropping effects that accompany an Unreal 3-based title.
It will be very interesting to see what Sega is capable of (or at least willing to attempt) with this new power sitting in-house. This could mark the beginning of Sega’s newest project that might just push them to the upper echelon of gaming, where they once sat with the Genesis and Dreamcast (though, their console days are, gratefully, at rest).
And for you readers, what are your predictions for Sega’s use of the Unreal 3 engine? First person shooter, or totally revamping to the Total War series? Is it completely wrong to wish for a new Ecco? Perhaps a BAMF (Google “Dane Cook” and “BAMF” for details) new Ecco, ready to wreak havoc on underwater wildlife, Torque bow and all!
