80GB PS3 due next month
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Sony is preparing to release an 80GB version of the PS3 next month but only in South Korea because North Korea has no use for such things. What other features it may have in addition to the larger hard drive remain a mystery and a Sony spokesperson will not say when the 80GB version will go on sale in other markets, namely Europe and the US.
The 80GB model is set to go on sale June 16th with a price of KRW 518,000 but to put that in to terms the rest of the world understands means it will cost £232 or $457. Now doesn’t that sound more reasonable, at that price, even I would buy a PS3. Why is Sony giving the Koreans a discount? The Inquirer does not have the answer.
We are all aware of the fact that the 60GB PS3 on sale in the UK lacks some major backwards compatibility and costs £425 or $840. This makes absolutely no sense at all, why is there such a major price discrepancy in the PS3 among different markets, I’m no financial analyst so I couldn’t tell you that but I can tell you it pretty much sucks to be a European or US PS3 buyer.
The XBOX 360 Elite still wins the prize for having the largest hard drive of 120GB but lacks built-in WiFi or the HD-DVD drive, get with the program Microsoft.
Not that I’m tempted to buy a PS3, not for $600 and not for only a 60GB hard drive, if the PS3 were more in-line with the $480 price of the XBOX 360 Elite then sure, I might give it a go.
This doesn’t change the situation much; we’re all just left sitting around here wondering what to do, like we were before except for the fact that now South Korea can rub the worlds face in the fact that they have a better PS3 than we do. Even if I don’t care, I’m still allowed to be jealous.

OK, Both yourself and the inquirer are idiots.. Lets set some facts straight.
1/ The Korean price EXCLUDES tax
2/ The UK price is the RRP, it’s actually available at £399 in many placers.
3/ The UK price INCLUDES 17.5% TAX and 10% EU Import Duty.
To make a fair comparision between the Korean price and the UK price, you need to take 27.5% of £399 Making a magic price of £314 Whilst still more than the Korean price, it’s at least a FAIR comparison…

Like I said, I’m NOT a financial analyst so I’m sorry if I don’t understand how foreign markets work…
If you are looking for a whole financial break down, this is the wrong site to read.
Being in the US… how am I supposed to know how much Korean tax is (sure I could look it up…)
I have no idea what RRP is, I’m guessing it’s like MSRP… and how would I know how much the PS3 *IS* in the UK since you know… I’m not there.
Again… Tax in the UK… how would I know? 10% import duty, again, how am I supposed to know that?
