No end in sight for Wii PS3 slaughter in Japan
By John Pospisil
Just released Japanese sales figures seem to confirm analysts’ fears that Sony will not meet its PlayStation 3 (PS3) sales target of 11 million consoles this year. The same figures also reveal that the Wii continues to dominate the Japanese console scene.
Sales figures from Tokyo market research company Enterbrain show that during May Sony sold one PS3 for every five Wiis that Nintendo sold.
The figures revealed that 241,794 Wiis were sold, compared to 45,321 PS3s. Microsoft sold just 11,082 Xbox 360s.
The situation seems to be getting worse for Sony; in the past Wii has outsold the PS3 by four to one, rather than five to one.
And according to rival market research company, Media Create, PS3 sales in Japan have fallen beneath the key 10,000-sales a week threshold for nearly a month.
These latest figures have sent analysts into a frenzy of predictions of doom and gloom.
Top analyst at KBC Securities, Hiroshi Kamide, said that sales of the PS3 were a lot lower than he expected.
“Smaller publishers and suppliers have also been dropping out of the PS3’s supply chain because it takes up too much of their resources and they cannot provide for DS or the Wii,” he told the Financial Times.
Analysts are speculating that Sony may move to cut the price of the PS3 to stimulate demand. But will that be enough to save the PS3?
