PS3 Price Cuts? Sony’s not saying no.
By David Cassel
There was big news from Sony today about the PlayStation 3. They almost didn’t not announce a major price break. Hooray?
Everyone in the industry knows Sony needs to lower the cost of the PS3. In the last few days Sony has done everything but announce a price cut — forcing everyone into yet another round of speculation. Today Sony’s President, Ryoji Chubachi, even told a Japanese newspaper that Sony “does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price.”
And Monday Sony said they could reduce the cost of their Blu-ray players. But wait — the PlayStation 3 is using Blu-ray discs. That’s what’s making it so expensive! So does cheaper Blu-ray technology mean Sony can also reduce the cost of the PS3?
At that exact moment, Sony did announce a price cut — on one of their Blu-ray video disc players. Great, but — um, about those PlayStation 3s?
Because, for the umpteenth time — they sure need to reduce the cost of the PS3. It’s being out-sold by Nintendo’s Wii — and the last set of figures showed the PS3’s share of new sales were getting worse, not better.
So when pressed about a price cut for the PS3, what did the President of Sony say?
He took a deep breath, and promised that the pricing of the PS3….
….would get a full assessment.
