Spanish doctor warns of Wii injuries

By David Cassel

Spanish doctor warns of Wii injuries.jpg29-year-old Julio Bonis is usually writing serious medical research papers like “Bioinformatics as support for the new pharmacogenetic strategies.” But this week he had a new message.

“The Wii hurts my arm.”

Actually, he provided a longer diagnosis — “acute tendonitis isolated to the right infraspinatus.” But he shared it in a letter to the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, warning that the popularity of Nintendo’s Wii console could make the condition more common.

“What convinced me to send the case report was that a friend of mine, after playing ‘Wii Sports’ suffered from a similar complaint,” he told Reuters.

Bonis is a medical resident in Spain, and on his web site he brags that he’s “a biomedical information expert” with “a broad vision about technologies that allow us to better understand the biomedical process.” Now if he could just stop the Wii from hurting his arm.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine letter, he’s successfully developed a course of treatment for the ailment — ibuprofen for one week. And there’s one more thing: “complete abstinence from playing Wii video games.” After his letter was published, Reuters asked him the obvious question — is his still risking “Wii-itis” by returning to his game console?

“I try to use it with moderation,” he answered, seeming sheepish at the question’s obvious implication.

“Sometimes it’s hard to do,” he added.

But if you’re worried about your Wii, just remember this. When writing his letter to the medical journal, Bonis made sure to include a crucial bit of information about the resolution of his case.

“The patient recovered fully.”
