Manhunt 2 Wii is a murder training device

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Manhunt 2 Wii is a murder training deviceJack Thompson, that lawyer we love to hate just won’t quit, it’s hard to imagine how his family does not now loathe his very existence. He is on a crusade to put an end to gaming, especially violent gaming. On his list now is Manhunt 2 for the Wii. It doesn’t end there.

According to QJ.net, he is also gunning for Super Smash Brothers Brawl since it "encourages kids to beat and throw their friends out of the stage" oh yeah, that’s so violent… it’s so violent I can’t bear to watch people play it, turn it off, turn it off NOW! (of course, that’s sarcasm of the highest degree). Just think what will happen if your kid decides to do more than stab your TV with the Wiimote. They might think a white knife is the Wiimote and go off on a rampage, oh the horror!

But, Manhunt 2 on the Wii is slightly different, instead of pushing buttons on a controller like you would with the XBOX 360 or PS3, you are required to mimic stabbing motions with the Wiimote making the act of in-game killing, all the more real.

Dear old Jack isn’t satisfied with the M rating of the game and thinks it should be banned all together. Australia has seen some success in completely banning some of the Grand Theft Auto games but here in the US we like shooting, killing and destroying stuff in games, it’s what we like to play.

I’m not a fan of the Manhunt series nor I have I played it, I’ve seen demos but I won’t touch the game. It’s simply not my style because there is no point to what you do in the game, unlike in the WWII games or Halo series in which there is a point to your mass destruction.

Here’s hoping Jack Thompson gets exactly what he deserves, permanent disbarment in every single US state and Territory. The minute he manages to win a case is the day gaming as we know it dies. He cannot ever be successful. Let’s all make it our mission to make sure he isn’t. With practically the whole gaming industry against him and the Florida bar… and the Alabama bar, how could we possibly lose?

just to clear things up. under Australia’s rating system, the Manhunt games would require an R18+ rating. but Australia doesnt have an R18+ rating for video games. if they did the games would be released here. so its not that Australia banned them, its just that Australia can’t give them a rating.

also the only GTA game banned was San Andreas because of the Hot Coffee Mod. but after the hidden content was removed, retailers were allowed to sell it again.

oh man this guys stupid now im gonna really gonna go shoot some people on the streets just like grand theft auto but since thats a waste of my time and money ill just sit here and play my wii yea wii maybe manhunt will get me active into actually getting up and going and going and killing some people just maybe! lol! wiii! jk!

    3. Aj:

Violent videogames are good. If i feel like shooting ramdom people, instead of doing it in real life, i can just do it on my wii. No-body gets hurt, unless they walk in front of the TV while im playing.

    4. Aj:

Besides its a free country, and we have the right to play whateva the hell we want in the privacy of our own homes.

    5. stuler:

      right on aj

This guy is a douche bag. It is “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” the THIRD Super Smash Bros. Game that is coming in the series. If you’re gonna attack a game for being violet, at least get the title right. I hate retards like him. Violent games actually probably PREVENT real-life violence.

    7. Jonathan:

If you’re talking about Jack Thompson, then yes, I agree with you. As for not getting the game right, having not followed the Super Smash Brothers series, I honestly wouldn’t know so don’t blame me, blame the folks at QJ.net who originally got it wrong. That does not excuse my lack of double checking facts, so for that, I will apologize.

And yes, there is a good chance that violent games prevent real life violence, I’m pretty sure a psychiatrist on the “Today Show” said that.

    8. Jack Thompson:

What in the world is wrong with you people. I have absolutely nothing to say about Smash Brothers. I don’t even know what it is. You’ve simply made this up, as the QJ.net piece doesn’t even suggest I have said anything about it.

As to Manhunt 2, I have never called for it to be banned. I have called for it not to be sold to juveniles, which just happens to be the law everywhere but in the US. That is my only position on the game.

As to my disbarment, ain’t gonna happen. As to my family, they love me because I’m not a liar like the people who posted this falsehood-laced “story.”

    9. Jake:

Well Mr Thompson, thats what happens when you become unpopular, i’m afraid. My advice would be to retire, take a long vacation, and forget that video games ever existed. Why bother with the “crusade” against violent video games? whats in it for you?
This article’s warping of the truth isn’t much worse than your own. Is there statistical proof that selling violent video games to juveniles makes all of them into serial killers? You would also do well to stay away from Microsoft, Bill Gates, and the Halo franchise. Just my two cents

    10. Jonathan:

Well, at the bottom of the article it said something about Smash Brothers “taking a hit” as well… I only assumed it was in reference to the story, maybe it wasn’t, truth is, I don’t know since the link was dead when I wrote the article and it appears to be dead right now.

Since maybe they aren’t… I will remove that part.

    11. Jonathan:

We’re having “technical difficulties” at the moment… when those are fixed, I’ll be able to correct some things.

    12. Jonathan Schlaffer:

In the interest of keeping things transparent, I struck out what was possibly an error on my part but have left the text there… so you all can see what mistake might have been made.

    13. Sean Rhodes:

But it IS a law that you can’t sell M-Rated games to minors. Just like it’s a law that you can’t sell unrated or R-Rated DVD’s to minors. Again, you have to go after the RETAILERS and PARENTS. This isn’t something the developers or publishers have control over.

And again, minors will still get a hold of the game regardless of what happens. I’m not saying it’s right for them to play these games. I’m simply saying that no form of regulation is going to stop them. Think of alcohol. You can’t drink until you’re 21 right? Then why are a multitude of people younger than 21 drinking? There’s a law in place. Or think about smoking. Illegal for someone younger than 18 to smoke, yet you’ve got people who get a hold of cigarettes younger than 18 all the time.

Common sense tells you that people will find a way around the system. The point is, if a minor wants the game, they’ll find a way to get it. They can send in a parent to buy it for them or what have you. In fact, that’s how most of these M-Rated games land in the hands of minors. The Parents buy it for them. Let the parent decide what is inappropriate for their child. Not lawyers and the government.

    14. beta:

i think all violent video games should have a similar warning to alcoholic beverage commercials - “please kill responsibly”. it’s ok for you to kill in the name of self-defense, however, a virtual environment where you just shoot things is bad. let’s take it to the next level - go after “DUCK HUNT”. killing defenseless virtual animals is bad!
