Wii still beating PS3 in Europe despite 1 million sold

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Wii still beating PS3 in Europe despite 1 million soldThe PS3 has finally managed to sell 1 million units in the UK and Europe which make use of the PAL standard as opposed to NTSC which is used in the Americas, Japan and Canada among others.

According to PC Advisor, the PS3 has sold 1 million units in just over 9 weeks since it became available on March 23. That makes the PS3 more popular than both the original PlayStation and PS2.

Sony managed to move 165,000 PS3s in the first two days it became available in Europe which made it the second best selling console right next to the PSP.

Sony’s online network (similar to XBOX Live, only free) has attracted 460,000 registered European users. In addition over 2 million first-party software titles have been sold and it should come as no surprise that Resistance: Fall of Man is the most popular title.

News is not all good as sales have been steadily declining in Japan and Sony has not reached their sales goal for that market. But, overall, Nintendo’s Wii is still crushing the PS3 in just about every market, not just Eurpoe. Oh well, you can’t win them all or even… any (in Sony’s case).

Where are your Wii numbers? According to UK charts and so on, the Wii is NOT crushing the PS3 as you seem to pupport? Numbers please rather than dribble? Wii has certainly not been selling 1 million in 9 weeks in Europe? So please explain your article title?

    2. bexmeister:

To Grover: Actually, Wii sold 1,000,000 in europe in 10 weeks, so about the same. But with the wii, demand is far greater than supply and they are impossible to get hold of, so in that respect, wii is winning.

    3. Jonathan Schlaffer:

Yeah, I’ll agree the title could have been better but the 1 million sold refers to the PS3, not the Wii. I’d like to thank bexmeister there for that clarification.

I don’t recall trying to compare it… not that we haven’t tried in the past. I’m neither on the side of the Wii or the PS3, just reporting as it is. I’m a PC and XBOX 360 gamer. Sony and Nintendo can beat each other over the head with bats for all I care.

    6. Lars:

Remember, the PS3 costs around 799 dollars in Europe. The Wii is 332 dollars. With such a huge price (too high for my taste) it’s still pretty impressive they’ve moved as many as they did.

Friends with Wii’s that have grown tired of Wii Sports are waiting for interesting new games. The long run will decide the winner…
