Wii is a medical miracle; PS3, Xbox 360 just make you fat
The Nintendo Wii is in the hands of millions across the globe and is one of the best selling consoles of all time, making it hard to get, even now. The Wii is popular with just about everyone but is cropping up in places you might not have expected, hospitals, rehab centers and retirement homes.
The Wii’s unique controls make it the perfect companion for rehab centers, teaching patients how to regain control of their arms and letting them have fun at the same time. Walter Rowy suffered a stroke and after only a week at the Riley Rehab Center, is mastering Wii sports thanks to the motion controls.
The Meridian Star spoke with Ben Rucks, director of rehab services at Riley, who said that Dr. Janet Coyle was responsible for adding the Wii to the rehab program for stroke patients.
“Dr. Coyle got one (Wii) for Christmas and after playing on it for awhile, she realized that it would be wonderful for our stroke patients,” stated Rucks.
He also said, “Unlike other video games — which only use the thumbs — the Wii requires use of the whole body, balance and hand-eye coordination.” “This is especially ideal for stroke patients in their recovery.”
So far the Wii has been credited for helping patients lose wait and is being used to treat children who suffer from hemiplegic cerebral palsy, a condition that paralyzes one side of the body.
Stroke support groups are also purchasing Wiis to allow people that can’t acquire or afford the console to continue therapy after leaving the rehab centers.
There is one problem; it seems women aren’t taking to the games as well as men have so additional games are in the pipeline that will hopefully make the Wii (more) enjoyable for all the patients.
In addition to rehab centers and hospitals, retirement communities are also snatching up Wiis where elderly residents use it to play virtual golf and bowl. Another title that should be considered by these centers is Big Brain Academy which will help keeps minds focused and sharp.
While some hospitals do have the Xbox 360 and PS2 on offer for most children’s wards, neither have been shown to offer the medical benefits of the Wii since those don’t require you to get up and move around which is required for most types of therapy involving everything from broken limbs to strokes or more serious conditions.
This gives Nintendo another claim to fame with the Wii, it is doctor approved, Sony can’t claim that and neither can Microsoft.

Just makes you fat? PS3 helps cure cancer HMMMMM sounds like PS3 is doing more than just making people fat. Plus if your fat because of PS3 or 360 you have a probelm and probally quit your job or droped out just to play them and eat all the time, which brings me to my second point if you get buff playing the wii once again you need to get a life.

They say 12 hours a week with the Wii kills 1,830 calories week.
It was also noticed that heart rates were much greater when the participants used the active console (Wii), reaching values of 130 beats per minute, as compared with 85 beats per minute for the traditional console.
fascinating.

joe90, u sound awesome mate, u have a point “a good felatio is better for raising the heart rate” so u giving ur boyfriend head while he plays ps3 or xbox 360 would make him have a hight heart rate than if he was playing the wii. Here is another tip dipshit anyone who calls it “felatio” has clearly never had a g/f or been out of their mothers basement cause they r too busy playing games.
June 25th, 2007
Yep Joe you have the right idea. Playing the PS3/Xbox all alone is much much better to ‘get laid’ than plaing a console with a heap of friends.
I guess if sitting alone and whacking it is your version of getting laid then you’re right…

Good article. Getting tired though of all the Wii-bashing though. Can we all agree though that while the graphics on the Wii are poor in comparison to the Xbox 360 and PS3 there’s still something appealing about the Wii that is driving sales? (and it’s not just the affordable price!)

We didn’t have blogs to bash the Atari 2600 back in the day when the Intellivision and Colecovision came out, but a lot of kids who bought into one of those two consoles bashed the Atari. It STILL outsold both of those two consoles and is so popular that a lot of games are still released for it each year through sites like AtariAge.
I dunno if people will still be releasing Wii games after 30 years, but there’s precedent for the least powerful console selling the best. If you’re too kiddie to have played the Atari back then, you only have to think back to the PS2.

Spencer your right Wii sales will drop in the future why because half the worlds population will own one by then ppl arent going to go out and buy a second one but that doesnt mean the PS3 and the 360s sales will go up either cuz by the time they drop there will be another new console out and ppl will be buying that
and again GRAPHICS DOESNT MAKE A GAME GOOD you guys sittin here talkin bout how graphics makes games good are complete idiots take for ex NES had some of the best games around and the graphics werent good or take PAC MAN one of the most played games in the world has shit graphics yet its one of the top so stop runnin ur mouth bout graphics cuz u aint a gamer if u think graphics means something

Raindog, the least powerful console IS the best. Why? Because its easier, faster, and cheaper to make games for the “inferior” console. That being said, Wii graphics, while not up to PS3 and 360 graphics, are hardly bad. Very nice looking games can be made for it, but Nintendo knows that graphics don’t make the system, because their graphicly inferior Gameboy dominated Sega’s great looking Gamegear.
This isn’t about that, nor is it about how much better Wii is for the average person playing a game. This is about the Wii actually being a tool for DOCTORS to help people who are going though physical therapy. I think this is very interesting, and I got out of college a year too soon to get to be in class discussions about it, but I can very much see the benefit.
Wii really is a full body workout. Just standing helps with balance, many muscles, and a lot of things. When you’re into a tennis match and swinging your arms, while you stand, its much harder to keep your balance, for instance. Many people in physical therapy need to work on the areas the Wii requires. It’s a wonderful tool for doctors.
It could also lead to tracking progress! Imagine being a doctor and having to try to keep track of how hundreds of people are doing with their therapy. Now imagine if you could get a general feeling of how your patient is doing with, say, an average weekly baseball score!
Nintendo has created something powerful here. It’s not a cure for cancer (but its not priced like it is either), but I see many hospitals carrying Wiis so that their patients can have fun, be social, and work out a little, as well as having benefit for anyone who is going though physical therapy.
360 and PS3 might be fun (for some, I don’t see the appeal in most of the games myself), but its much less of a social experiance, even with others, and if anything, its going to give you carpal tunnel, not help you recover.
