PS3 outselling Wii and Xbox 360 down under

By Jonathan Schlaffer

PS3 outselling Wii and Xbox 360 down under The Nintendo Wii is doing well in Australia, being the quickest to reach 100,000 units sold but Sony claims that the PS3 is actually selling better overall than Nintendo’s much beloved Wii is.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia brought some new figures to the forefront with its managing director Michael Ephraim saying the PS3 has been the best selling console in Australia since it launched there. He continued by saying the PS3 has outsold the Wii and Xbox 360 every week.

Gamespot AU caught up with Ephraim and in the interview he said, “Since March 23, the PS3 has been the number one-selling next-gen console in Australia, and this is GfK figures. We’ve now sold 50,000–and we’re very excited about the fact that it’s being sold in retailers that are gaming retailers as a gaming device and other things, but as you’ll notice it’s now being sold in Harvey Norman consumer electronic stores as a Blu-ray player.”

The fact that the PS3 has moved 50,000 units in Australia since March 23 is quite impressive. The Wii has sold 100,000 units since December 7th of last year. That means there are more Wiis in Australian homes but the PS3 is selling better and could perhaps catch up to or surpass the Wii.

Australia’s sales figures are almost the exact opposite of the US and Japan where the Wii continues to outsell both the Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3. I guess things just work differently in Australia.

    1. Chris:

It could be the fact that the Wii can hardly be found while there is a large abundance of the PS3s.

    2. Mojo:

Sony so gagging and desperate for good news they decided invent some.

The PS3 sold 50,000 Xbox 360 sold 160,000 and the wii sold 100,000 clearly Sony is the all round winner.

      The whole thing rings rootkit.

    3. Jonathan:

It’s not really invention and we aren’t talking about total sales, we’re talking about a certain number of sales over a certain time period in which it appears… that the PS3 is winning whether that means it will overtake the others, remains to be seen.

    4. Mojo:

      Good point Jon.

The oz address above States it took 15 weeks for PS3 to sell 50,000. The Wii reached the 50,000 sold mark much faster - a mere three weeks after launch.

He continued by saying the “PS3 has outsold the Wii and Xbox 360 every week…”

      …”except last week.”

You left that bit out of his quote g.b.

He’s already talking complete marketing/statistics bs, lets misquote him while we’re at it?
