PS3 serves as punching bag for Wii, XBOX 360 and media

By Jonathan Schlaffer

PS3 serves as punching bag for Wii, XBOX 360 and media The PS3 has taken a lot of heat, for being too expensive, for having a Blu-Ray drive that makes it expensive and the press seems to enjoy bringing Sony and the PS3 down to its knees these days. One man of one company outside of Sony is standing up for the PS3 and defending Sony’s honor.

The CEO of Insomniac Games, Ted Price stood up for Sony and its PS3. In a GameDaily interview he said, “I think the PS3 has become the whipping boy for the press, quite honestly.”

Not only a “whipping boy” for the press but for everyone else including the competing consoles from Nintendo, which continues to dominate the market and Microsoft which is sitting at the number two spot with the XBOX 360.

Price wishes that people had not been so ready to overly criticize Sony and the PS3 because Resistance: Fall of Man was affected but is still the number one title on the PS3.

“The fact is that PS3’s out there, it’s sold well, and we’re looking at an upcoming Christmas that should provide a lot of unique content to players, which is pretty exciting,” he said.

According to Price, Resistance: Fall of Man is one of the best selling titles on the PS3 but neither the PS3 nor any of its games are on any top ten sales list.

The PS3 is still losing money for Sony and those top ten lists are currently dominated by Nintendo with everything Wii. The XBOX 360 is sitting in a comfortable number two spot with the PS3 pulling up a very far away third place. Amazon’s top sales list places the PS3 at number 24.

Do anyone come to the 64 or the GC’s defence?

    2. Eddosan:

That’s a very good point you make, King D. There were probably several articles like this one (about N64 and GC though) back when those consoles came out.

    3. maylon:

Jumping the gun just a little bit, arent we? The 360 is technically still number 1 at over 11 million sold, Wii is over 8. Yes, I know Wii is quickly closing the gap, but get your facts straight.

    4. maylon:

Jonathan Schlaffer, or “Wii fanboy’. God, I used to bash Sony and the Ps3, but now I realize the Wii is clearly a threat to the end of hardcore games. I may go purchase a Ps3 to complement my 360.

    5. Jimi:

      Yes… I too am confused.
Number 1, do they mean last month?
The Wii is Number 2, not 1, 2!
The Xbox 360 has about a 50% market share, so unless we are working on some new model with over 100%, the Xbox 360 has the Number 1 place in this three horse race.
      Xbox 360 > PS3 + Wii

The media are general public are total idiots. They cry that the PS3 is too expensive at $599 with it’s cutting edge Blu-Ray player, Cell CPU, and mighty capabilities, but then all rush out an spend more money that this on a iPhone!!!

The media are bashing PS3, purely because it has dominated the last generations so much, and the way it’s heading, it’s going to dominate this generation as well.

The 360 is running out of steam, Halo3 beta is a major disappointment in many peoples eyes, coming nowehere near expectations, and not even looking anywhere near as good as Gears Of War. Many people are now thinking that Gears in the pinaccle of what the 360 can achieve, and for the rest of the consoles life, there will be few games exceeding Gears in grahpical capabilities.

The Wii is just a fad. It’s the hi-tech equivellent of TickleMeElmo. Everyone wants one, because the hype train says they must own one. 6 months from now, people will wonder what hit them…

    7. mc.chick:

In 6 months the Wii will be to big. All game developers will want to make games on the Wii. The games will get better than the ports it has now. And before you know the wii is the new ‘playstation’ of this generation. Aiiii that must hurt the xbox and playstation fans :(

    8. Wayne:

I can’t see the Wii providing a good gaming experience over the long term. The Wii is competing against the PS2 not the PS3. Nintendo will have to go back to the drawing boards when the PS3 starts to dominate.

    9. mc.chick:

True wayne, and they will… after 10 years the ps3 will dominate over the Wii (because the Nintendo by then will have a new console thats already 5 years old). Consoles that sell bad in the first year of it’s life are doomed. Look at the history of consoles.

The ps2 is actualy competing with the ps3. Sony must stop making the ps2 if they want to make the ps3 a succes. ps2+wii killed the ps3! :)

When people talk about the Wii being in the lead, they’re talking about its lead in current sales, not lifetime market share. Every week in Japan and every month in the US and Europe, you hear that Wii sold the most, followed by the 360, followed by the PS3 (with the DS wiping the floor with all of them.)

As for the Wii being the death of hardcore games…. I was playing video games when you “hardcore gamer” kids were in diapers, so I’ll be pretty pleased that the hardcore thing turned out to be just a fad. I may still buy a 360, but it’ll be for XBLA, not GOW or any of that hardcore garbage.

I spend more time playing, thinking and talking about games than most “hardcore” players do, and I’m tired of “hardcore” meaning “shooter or RPG”, or “games in shades of brown and grey”, because I think they’re dull as rocks. I’m glad to see the market dominated by bright, fun, colorful, surreal games again, the kind that I can show to other people and have them enjoy.

raindog469, no one gives a fuck if you wanna be an individualist or whatever the fuck you’re trying to be.

    12. raindog469:

qwerty, no one gives a fuck if you think you hardcore types still own the market. We win, you lose.

    13. Ivan_PSP:

Xbox 360 sucks Microsoft has lost 6 billions on that piece trash %33 failure rate.
