No more Xbox 360 red ring of death repairs
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Microsoft has had so many bad Xbox 360s come in for repair that they have contracted out the work to “authorized” service centers. It is now losing some of those contractors because of all the bad Xbox 360s that are coming through the doors.
One company, Micromart is stating that it will no longer repair Xbox 360s suffering from the “red ring of death” syndrome. It will continue to service Microsofts console for other problems.
Micromart has noticed that an inordinate number of Xbox 360s were coming in with the “red ring of death” and the technicians there began noticing why. The reason was that the solder points on the motherboard became overheated and no longer connected to the motherboard.
At the height of the problems, Micromart was seeing 30 Xbox 360s per week suffering from the “red ring of death” before it decided to stop servicing those units.
When asked if the points could just be re-soldered, a spokesman for the company said, “we’re talking thousands of joints which need to be reflowed” and he continued with that it would be “nearly impossible” for the company to fix all the joints.
This may be only the beginning, with Micromart, no doubt others will follow and then Microsoft itself will be left to fix all the Xbox 360s out there with the “red ring of death” problem and wait times will just increase from there, as bad as those are now, it can only get worse from here.
