Buy a Sony PS3 now for only $499
By Jonathan Schlaffer
After denying rumors that the PS3 would see a price cut, it seems that some stores are now selling the PS3 for $499 down from $599. Sony just as recently as yesterday said the PS3 would not see a price cut. That has not stopped some stores from offering the $499 price.
According to PS3 Fanboy some Target stores are selling the PS3 at $499 but this price is not in effect at all stores. One Target in Kansas listed the PS3 as $599 and two Circuit City managers sold a PS3 for $499, after checking the price in its computer.
Target stores in California are selling the PS3 for $499. There is no pattern to the chaos. Some stores are selling it at $499 and some stores are at $599, so call ahead first.
Prices do not appear to be reduced online, at this time the SonyStyle Store is still listing the PS3 as $599. One would think that if Sony has officially reduced the price of the PS3, the first place to see the lower price would be the SonyStyle store.
Sony may not have reduced the price, “officially” but some retailers are reducing it anyway because the PS3 needs this price cut. However, any store can sell the PS3 at any price it wants, if a store wanted to sell it at $299, it could do so but could not advertise that price.
It appears that stores have taken an “artistic license” to price the PS3 at $499 regardless of what the advertised price is. This policy will vary store to store, even among the same chain.
If you’re lucky then maybe a store in your area is selling a PS3 for $499, ask first before you get to the checkout line. For $499, I’d certainly consider picking one up, it’s either that or the iPhone.

$499, bargain!?!
Too bad if you bought the neutered PS3 for that price 6 months ago…
…or a $599 PS3 last week.
Sucks to be a Sony early adopter.
