Sony cuts 60GB PS3 by $100, introduces 80GB model to US

Sony cuts 60GB PS3 by $100, introduces 80GB model to US After many rumors and denials by Sony itself that the PS3 would not see a price cut, effective immediately, the PS3 is now priced at $499 which is $100 less than the original release price.

Sony may have announced “effective immediately” but the price has not yet been reduced across the board. Amazon.com and the SonyStyle store are still listing the 60GB PS3 as $599. At least it’s now official and the price cut should be realized “very soon.”

One of the reasons for this price cut goes along with Sony’s other announcement. The 80GB version of the PS3 is coming state side for $599.

Those of you may remember in the early days of the PS3 there were two models available, the 20GB base version and the 60GB version. Sony pulled the 20GB model because it wasn’t selling well and also because it didn’t want two PS3 SKUs sold at the same time.

But here we are again, with two PS3s to choose from. That’s okay though, because the 60GB model isn’t a stripped down base version like the 20GB model was. It’s up to you if the 80GB version is worth $100 more at $599. Sony is charging $100 for an additional 20GB, just stick with the 60GB version.

The 80GB PS3 will be available by August in the US and will come with a copy of MotorStorm. In my opinion it would just be better to offer gamers a choice of one game instead of packaging it with one. Or, package it with Resistance: Fall of Man. I can dream.

Wow! A choice of two PS3 models, one $499 the other $599, same as at release!

So, err, where’s the price cut?

Good ole’ Sony-spin, turning a HD upgrade into massive “price slashing”.

Fact is, PS3 is still too expensive.
