Sony thinks price cuts would "annoy": PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 price war unlikely

July 21, 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe President, David Reeves, says a summer price cut on the European PS3 would annoy people. What he doesn’t mention are the great advantages Sony gamers posses over their Nintendo and Xbox 360 counterparts, making a price war even more unlikely.

Despite the ridiculous price of the Sony PS3 in Europe, Reeves comments on the lack of a price cut in an interview with ThreeSpeech. ”July is not really a gamers’ month unless you get a big, big title. So we thought if we reduced the price, we’d annoy a lot of people.”

Not satisfied with digging just a few shovel scoops into a hole, the Sony boss continues to further the dig, mentioning the ill state of the PS3 in Europe.

“…we’re actually not doing too badly, we’re not selling as well as Wii or DS…”

“…we also felt that [the PS3] wasn’t doing that badly.”

“We’re not putting our heads in the sand, we know it’s not selling that well…

“We’ve tended to do these starter or value-added packs, and people have come out and said: You know, that’s not bad.”

Never does he use the words “good” or “great” to describe the current state of the PS3 in any away.

The whole interview indicates Sony doesn’t believe now is the time for a price cut and we will see prices drop when the time is right, most likely the Holiday Season.

Despite the lack of “good” or “great” PS3 sales in Europe, what Reeves never touches is the advantages of Sony gamers over non-Sony gamers. Against Nintendo, PS3 gamers get to know they didn’t drop hundreds of dollars on a bookend. Against Microsoft, PS3 gamers get to know they’ve had the privilege of being financially manhandled by the one and only, Sony.

So much for PR…

By Danny Mendez: “Against Microsoft, PS3 gamers get to know they’ve had the privilege of being financially manhandled by the one and only, Sony.” Your an IDIOT!!!

  2. Peter Sakes:

Everyone knows the price will drop big time as soon as they dump all the 60GB models and old (non rumble) controllers. What they need now is a whole bunch of fools to shell out top dollar for a non competitive product – problem is none of the fools are buying either!

Tuff luck Sony – you will be dropping your pants at Christmas.

  3. janus:

The more the various presidents speak, the less I want to buy…bring back Ken! These guys most certainly dont have a handle on their mouths. Loose lips sink ships…talk about shooting yourself in the foot. They should all shut up. Seriously.

  4. Xboxlenny:

Sony how u sugar coat it. i am sure that extra $100 savings or so in my pocket will surely annoy me. I dont own a PS3, but with a price drop it sure would help. Sony should have a price drop across the board. Also decide on what they wanna do, get a unified system or 2, and stick to it. Sony does have great potental and need to get it right.

to “peter sakes” i think u got the right idea. i think sony are doing that plan to move out the 60GB to move in the 80GB with rumble. lets hope the price drop passes on to the 80Gb. but there is always a fool to buy it for that price. i would wait for the drop on the ultimate 80 gb model with rumble. it changes so much rumble.

  5. Jimi:

I thought rumble would be a “disservice to our [Sony's] customers”?
Sony changed its mind on that?
I will never buy a PS3, unless in the very distant future, but then I will only use it as a movie player, which I don’t really need, as my Xbox 360 does DVD’s great, and it does downloaded HD movies even better.
Everything should be downloaded, or even better, everything should be streamed onto the console. The PS3 might be for some people, but I am really into Halo, Fable, and Gears of War. That made the choice easy for me.

  6. dan:

so sony thought that europeans having to pay at least £250 more than people in the US and Japan would annoy them less?
    ok then sony……………
    and for a worse machine????

  7. Matt:

Sony knows something stinks in their kitchen.

I also will never buy a PS3, and I’ve bought he last two. Guys like this article’s author who think some peak performance number is the end-all beat-all in gaming should go get a job for Sony hawking PS3, because they’re towing the company line.

Their “Tim the tool-man Taylor” approach and general lack of imagination will cost Sony this time around. I envision a sizeable spurt for GTA 4, and that still wont be enough to make PS3 profitable for Sony anytime soon.

  8. Kevin:

Sony fanboys need not be disappointed. So you’ve got a tiny marketshare, so what? You will still get to play games in 1080, just nothing new. You can play madden and grand theft auto – they’re just like the PS2 ones just in 1080 yay!!!
PS3 = awesome textures used to shore up the same old games.

  9. ace:

kevin u cok sucka! its the 360 that hasnt brought anuthin new to the table while the wii and ps3 are innovating. even tho the ps3 is havin a very slow start. 360 is all ’seen it all b4′ titles. if u wna reply n say im wrong ill just name a few ps title wich features totaly nu gameplay – little big planet, eye of judgement, mostion sensing abilities plus others. the wii had all the nu stuff. i cnt think of 1 game the 360 has that has offered totaly new gameplay. theirs only halo im lookin 4ward 2 now n 2 me it dnt look that much od a step up from tha last 1 just in HD! it will kill online tho. but after september im wont b lookin 4ward 2 anythin else on the xbox probly until gears 2. then ill b on the ps3 and the wii if it aint dyin out yet.

  10. mojo:

    Hello – I’m gaff-prone Reeves

  11. mark:

@dan, you know it’s £250 more, because of VAT and import duties, not down to sony right??

  12. Scott:

The reality is that the market is big enough to support all three consoles, so everyone needs to take a chill pill.

The PS3 needs to do everything they can to sell their consoles. If they do not win this Christmas season, then it will be impossible to regain market dominance.

The 360 is doing good and will end up with more market share than last generation. The Wii will become the market leader (who cares about this if your a hardcore gamer). Sony will finish close with the 360.

  13. Kevin:

Ace, the motion sensing capabilities are a last minute shoehorned item into the tired PS2 controller – which itself is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. Same thing, slightly improved, and we’re supposed to go hooray!!!

The graphics are where they put their attention on the PS3 – not a bad gamble, just happened to be very bad timing. Run of the mill gamers who want HD graphics already bought a xbox 360 who would sooner buy additional games then spend nearly 1 grand to start a good PS3 collection(most people don’t own every console in a generation). Japanese video game fans bought Wiis. Nintendo has stolen their Japanese thunder (look at the sales in japan wii vs PS3, even worse than the ratio in the US). No, they wont “regain market dominance” with the PS3, not ever. Sony needs to adapt the next time around and try thinking outside the box if they’re going to ask this much for their console.

  14. DeArchitect:

    Kevin,
Your entire anti-PS3 argument is based around the inabillity of lazy 3rd party developers to take the time to properly create games for the PS3.

I can’t even imagine how little you read about games, and Current Hardware for each console.

And only Run of the mill Frat boys and college kids who want HD graphics already bought a 360.

Dont get me wrong, I do agree with some of what you said, but I don’t like you’re attitude.

And No Sony does not have to adapt to the market, thats what makes them Sony. If that were the case, the next gen of gaming would all be market friendly low cost Wii consoles.
    Now who would want that.

Just Give Sony time, a console so pricey could not have started any other way.
