Nintendo Wii not in console war with Xbox 360 and PS3
By Danny Mendez

As an outsider looking in to the gaming industry, I cannot help but note that the Nintendo Wii has placed itself in its own category, a category significantly different than the the group the PS3 and Xbox 360 find themselves in.
I don’t know a single person who owns a Nintendo Wii and is satisfied with the console on its own. Every person that I know who has one, doesn’t use the console as their primary gaming machine. They either have an Xbox 360 (usually) or a PS3 and then a Nintendo Wii as sort of ”toy” to play with on occasion.
It’s as if though these gamers use their extra cash to buy the Wii for the novelty of it, but their main resources and cash are contributed to either Sony or Microsoft.
I’m not saying that it’s bad for the Wii, that’s actually a great move by Nintendo. To become so different that no matter what other console a gamer has, a Nintendo Wii sits right along side it.
The true console war belongs to the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3. It’s then that price matters, that game selection matters. It’s then that graphics, power, features, wireless, all of that matters. None of that matters for Nintendo because many people are going to buy a Wii whether or not they own another console.
The theory can be compared to PC gaming. No one competes with PC gaming because it’s an established category all on its own. Perhaps we’ll see Apple and Microsoft competing in the PC gaming category eventually, but as for right now the PC has no competition in the gaming arena.
Nintendo has done something revolutionary with the Wii by carving out a second category in the console wars, and, by being the only contributor to the category, it becomes a winner no matter how well the PS3 and Xbox 360 do.

“It’s as if though these gamers use their extra cash to buy the Wii for the novelty of it, but their main resources and cash are contributed to either Sony or Microsoft.”
Well, if that is true, then how come Nitendo is on top of the software lists too? How come every month they outsell the other ones?
People see Wii as a fad. That is a juggernaut of a fad, if you ask me.
July 22nd, 2007
Congrats to Sergi,
You pointed out something that the article writer was an idiot to ignore. Software sales. That says it all.
July 23rd, 2007
Forgot to mention one more item. When the Wii matches the sales of 360 & PS3 combined, who will be buying the Wii then? Will it be 360 and PS3 owners that need backup Wii’s since they are so cheap and replaceable? Can’t wait until that thought provoking article comes out.
July 23rd, 2007
wii is good but it gets boring Fast! i need a ps3 or maybe a 360
July 23rd, 2007
You people are missing what he said. He didn’t say people don’t buy many games for the Wii, just that it is not their primary gaming device. He didn’t say that no one owns a Wii without one of the other two, just that those people are not really gamers… they are just people who play a game or two sometimes.
I can’t see how anyone could want a Wii enough to spend $250 on it plus games. I guess I just don’t like Nintendo anymore… six year old me loved it, but I am not six anymore. I love my Xbox 360. The reasons are: the online, the games (Halo, Fable, Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto), and the controller. It is the best controller ever. Nintendo’s best controller was the N64 one, but it lacked a second thumbstick (a second trigger wouldn’t hurt either).

yeah, jimi shut the fuck up you brownnosing little bitch. go and have sex with you white and green friend if you love it so much

As always, I’d like some proof that supports the claims in this article.
July 23rd, 2007
OMG, what else i’m i going to hear…….
by saying that, he shows that xbox360 and ps3 are true losers,
wii is in the same category since it’s a console with games that are available in other consoles as well….
he just tries to explain why so many wii have been sold………..stupid!!!
hahahahahahahaha
WII ARE THE WINNERS!!!!!
July 23rd, 2007
you cannot change it whatever you say……
how does he knows that wii is the secondary machine…….he is worthless……OMG…
but what else can he do????
July 23rd, 2007
The article is meant to introduce a theory. I’m not dissing the Wii. The Wii is different and has carved its own category out of the gaming industry, similar to PC gaming. If you disagree with the theory, that’s fine. But you have to admit that many people who own a PS3 or 360 may buy a Wii as well, but won’t buy all three. It’s just a trend that i’ve noticed. If I may have stated it as fact rather than opinion, than I’m sorry, but I don’t think I did. Regardless, the article is meant to introduce a theory about the Wii’s success.
The Wii wins no matter what because once someone buys a PS3 or 360, they tend not to buy the other, but people still tend to buy a wii even if they have another console.
Of course there are exceptions, there are people who have all three, but I’m just commenting on a trend I see.
If you disagree, than you have a different opinion, and that’s fine.
July 23rd, 2007
Wow, nice to see some well informed and intelligent opinions…not.
attack the argument, not the person.
the whole debate over whether the Wii is a fad or not will continue for some time…the reason why some ppl out there are claiming it is a fad is the sales pattern matches that of the hula hoop, yo-yo and the rubix cube….
i know of one person (friend) who owns a Wii, he dosn’t even use it anymore.
July 23rd, 2007
Your basic idea is good: Nintendo managed to make it’s own market. They always wanted this.
You just forgot that many people not willing to buy a gaming platform have bought the Wii, and this boosts sales.
July 23rd, 2007
Young hardcore gamers will continue to play the other two systems as they gives exactly what the want.
More mature players with a job, less free time and the need to use their brain, do love the Wii.
July 23rd, 2007
Crazy internet junkies! No point in arguing. “Adrea” sucks ass and is wrong on all accounts!
July 23rd, 2007
well its weird cos i know loads of people with only a wii who if they bought another console would have that other console as the secondary console. i had two consoles last generation and a PC, yet this time round all i have is a Wii.
Im bored of Halo, Medal of Honour……Yawn, thank god theres some new games on Wii to keep me entertained. Need i mention Super Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Resi Evil 4 & UC.
You know cos the ps3 is such a hardcore machine with like its 2 games it has
July 23rd, 2007
you all need to grow up, great article, interesting theory
July 23rd, 2007
useless article. to reference from personal experience of your small group of friends is a waste of time when looking at the global picture. I don’t personally know anyone who regularly eats noodles, but if I went to china I could find over a billion people who do. reading about the console wars is hilarious and it seems to me that the more you spend, the more you defend

“I don’t know a single person who owns a Nintendo Wii and is satisfied with the console on its own.”
Well this seems like an almost classic case of ’self-selection’ wherein a view is confirmed because EVERYONE the view holder meets believes the exact same things as he. Of course since he only meets like minded people by his own choice, he really only hears what he ‘wants’ to hear.
Nintendo has seemingly CONSCIOUSLY made a decision to expand the gaming market by also appealing to those who are not ‘gamers’. In other words just ‘ordinary’ folks. Who frankly represent the OVERWHELMING majority of potential consumers. As a result of this inspired action they are eating everyone else’s lunch and show strong signs of continuing to do so. They have developed their own market in effect. A market that PS3 and X-Box simply cannot access at this point. So really Nintendo has TWO market bases to which to appeal.
But Mr Mendez does not “know a single person who owns a Nintendo Wii and is satisfied with the console on its own.”
Mr Mendez should probably get out more.
July 23rd, 2007
Wii has outsold the ps3 and 360 combined for what the last 8 months. With Smash bros, Wii Fit, Kart, galaxy, bwII, Wii Music, Big Brain, Resident evil.. etc etc Dont expect anything less from the best console out there.
Wii. Innovative, Cheap, Fun.
July 23rd, 2007
y are all of you taking this as a personal attack? its just a theory about the wii, calm down ppl. your all being a bunch of wiiners, lol
July 23rd, 2007
Wow, way off base here.
We have all the last gen consoles at our house, but the only new gen console we have is the Wii. Its great fun, it gets played all the time. There has been no real desire to get a XBox360 or a PS3.
Friends and family, that aren’t traditional gamers, that have played it, want or buy a Wii. I have a 64 year old aunt who purchased it just for Wii Sports bowling.
Wii does need online games, thats coming.
Wii doesn’t really need better graphics. I think one of my favorite PS2 games was Katamari. Not the best graphics, but a blast to play.
Wii haters, get over it. Play your 3 hours of Gears of War over and over again, while we play the 80 hours of Zelda TP.
July 23rd, 2007
New graphics does not mean new game play. It makes no since to have a new console every five years with no new games, just the same fps with beater graphics no new game play
July 23rd, 2007
Dan, you absolutely right.
It’s not competiting with any of the next generation consoles, its a machine that’s clearly technologically inferior & part of Nintendo’s “side step” strategy.
Nintendo is no longer able to compete in hardware, software or platform gaming. The Wii was designed to attempt and lure people away from amazing graphics, horsepower and Tripple AAA Titles on the likes of PS3/X360.
What we have with the “Wii” is a machine that is attempting NOT to cater to “casuals” but to be used as a trump card in Nintendo failing saga of gaming.
Two generations have passed since Nintendo was slapped down by Sony..and now a brand new strategy of bringing old hardware with magical “wii-motes” and lackluser kiddy software titles is cashing in on the sorely missed $$$ that Nintendo has so desperetly been seeking to recoup over these last failing 11 years.
Believe me, Sony will come out on top..the only company so far that knows how to cater to EVERYONE, as seen with their history making PS2..and soon to be PlayStation 3.
[And dont worry Danny, these pathetic weirdos that come on here to bash your article are just…that, oh and lacking a wallet ; ) ]

so if the wii is the second choice to buy then why is it out selling competiors i think its wii is the 1st choice to buy then either a 360 or ps3! i have a wii and nothing else dont plan on buying one of the other two either! plus i dont even have the money or time to buy a 360 or wii it was hard enough for me to get a wii and its also cheaper i bought a wii with 4 for games and an extra nunchuck for about 460$ plus tax thats like way better then just buying a 360 with no games or a ps3 which i dont know if that enough? my cuz loves the wii and his friend does to and there both in there 20’s im 17 rite now and i havent been more happy with these kinda of games usually when i play my friends 360 he will kill me easily in call of duty! and it pisses me off because im not great with those controller settings but when i play medal of honor with him on my wii its a competive game since the wii gives gamers a new way to play its more competive because everyone knows how to just play it already u simply run with joystick aim and shoot move curson to side of screen to turn and look! the only person i know who never plays games is my mother but she does play the wii she wont play it unless i tell her to but thats it but if i tell her to play the 360 when i borrow it shes like! i dont wanna play that shit! put back some tv on! i use the wii once about every day for an hour i turn it on to see what new virtual titles they released i currently just have 4 virtual titles! wii is a great peace of hardware waiting for super smash bros brawl!

I doubt he even wrote this article… probably just copied and pasted a dozen diffrent “Wii is not in the console war” articles into his… I’ve heard this way too damn much.

fuck the wii ps3 rules and go play with ur little wiiner lol

oh no, i think i just heard the sound of a million wiiners crapping their pants, pissing themselves, and crying for their mommys, ITS AN OPINION ARTICLE, TAKE IT EASY EVERYONE
July 23rd, 2007
To me, it’s clear Sony and Microsoft have opted out of the console wars, and left Nintendo all by themselves. Microsoft and Sony want to occupy the all-in-one-awful-PC space, and I think you’re seeing sales that actually reflect that. Nintendo is doing what they always do, which is making a kick-ass video game console.
Oh, yeah, I only own a Wii, and I’m not going to buy either of the other companies’ wares until they get their head out of the clouds and offer their systems at true video game console prices. I’ve come to the conclusion that the author simply leads a very sheltered life, since he doesn’t know anybody personally that owns only a Wii.
July 23rd, 2007
Danny,
As an outsider looking into the game industry, you probably shouldn’t be writing articles about people’s gaming preferences. How many people do you actually know with a Wii that you’ve based your opinion on?
As an independent game development studio, there’s a lot more than the ratio of how many people own more than one console to factor into the equation. Sell-through is an important word to potential 3rd party developers like ourselves. We don’t factor in the stats of who owns both a Wii and a 360 or a PS3 and a Wii or a 360 and a PS3. We look at sell-through numbers. What this refers to is the actual number of consoles sold. Don’t get this confused with units shipped. A shipped unit means that it has gone from the factory to the store. Sell-through means it has gone from the store to the customer’s house.
3rd party developers want to release their games on the system everyone has, thus why the XB360 is doing fairly well with the amount of developers for the system. The Wii is gaining a lot of developers due to the sell-through amount. In the same terms, more and more developers are shying away from making PS3 games due to the rather poor sales. It is no new news that Sony lost some exclusivity rights to some of their key titles, and time will only tell what will happen in the next year.
A lot of us in the industry say its simply karma coming back at Sony for their schoolyard-style mud-slinging starting from the days of the PS1, where Sony branded Nintendo as a “kiddy” system. Unfortunately for Sony, karma is a harsh disciplinarian. Their MMO ventures have turned sour, with Everquest 2 losing out to World of Warcraft and Vanguard losing out to Lord of the Rings Online.
Ultimately, the overstated is the most obvious reason for Sony’s struggle: the Blu-Ray player. Had they not incorporated this device into the PS3, they could have sold the system for $300-$400 and dominated this generation. Yet, they insisted on forcing the new technology on everyone. The problem here is, many consumers still do not own HDTVs. On HDTV there has only been a sell-through rate of 20% in the US. The other 80% are still using their old CRT tvs. Combine this fact with the fact that most of the people who actually BUY movies on disc already have an extensive DVD collection and are not likely going to find a need to buy the same movies, but on Blu-Ray. In the end, only the videophiles are going to really make use of the Blu-Ray technology, and they are a very small user base.
In the end, all 3 systems are competing with each other, because it all comes down to the developers. For conjecture, if SquareEnix starts focusing on Wii games, even if not their Final Fantasy series, they will have to allocate resources for that, which in turn delays games for the other systems from their studio. So, despite the differences in hardware, all 3 consoles are competing for one audience: the developers. That’s right, not the gamers, but the developers. It is the developers’ job, in turn, to produce fun games for the customer to buy… and for the record, Nintendo and Microsoft are doing a good job of attracting the developer audience. If Sony doesn’t make some big moves before the Christmas season, their system just might be sunk.

What a rubbish article, its obvious this person is biased towards the xbox 360 and ps3. Placing the Wii into it’s own category is another way of Xbox/PS3 fanboys covering up the fact that the Wii is selling more hardware than Sony and Microsoft every month.
July 23rd, 2007
Are you okay ? Do you know read Numbers??
how is possible? a machine that is second to others sell more than other two ? something is wrong !
it´s ok like a personal opinion ! but someone like you must give us real data.. no bullshit that you heard anywhere
July 23rd, 2007
guys, the wii is in its own category, nintendo stated that at e3 06, and they hit the nail on the head, everyone and their grama is buying the wii, key word GRAMA, its more popular with avid casual gamers than true hardcore gamers
July 23rd, 2007
ok if i remember correctly a games console is designed to be a cheap alternative to a PC that every generation improves on graphics and innovates on the controller. To me only Wii fits this.
the 360 and PS3 are the ones who have narrowed their user bases by attempting to be jack of all trades yet master of none. you buy a PS3 and u want a HDTV, there was once a time u bought your console for your tv.
is the Wii not just doing what the PS2 did last time? cheap, bottom range graphics with games that appeal to all?
is it infact the PS3 that has moved its attention into a market way off its popular ps2 console. As for the xbox had it not had the deep pockets of microsoft behind it it would have gone bankrupt long ago.
July 23rd, 2007
Relax people, it’s an opinion. A rather unpopular opinion to most of you it seems. However you shouldn’t attack people for their opinions.
I’m going to go one further and state my own opinion now.
First off, I’ve yet to even get a new console (I’m still rediscovering old PS2 games I overlooked) so I’ve only had brief tasters of the Wii. Even though I’d love to have one, the thing that lets it down for me is the games library. Most Wii games are undeniably collections of mini games at the moment, and I’d like Nintendo to release more engrossing games before I’d get one. Ok you can list games like Smash Bros, Zelda, Mario Kart, Galaxy etc. which all look fun but I’m concerned about the lasting appeal these games would have on me. Same with the DS: I bought one with Brain Training, Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart and loved it. But it was short lived because games seem to be released few and far between and rarely appeal to me. So I’m now stuck with only a handful of games that I’m bored to death with. That’s partly the reason for my current skepticism toward the Wii becoming my primary console.
July 23rd, 2007
I have owned just about every console ever produced. I was playing pong before most of you kids were a twinkle in your fathers eye. Every time a new console came out, I was there, I didn’t care if it was nintendo, sony or ms. I wanted to, hell needed to have them all just so there wouldn’t be a game produced that I couldn’t play. Today, besides all previous consoles, only ther WII has been purchased. Sony, with there spyware, malware inbeddied into music/video disc’s, and I’m greater than thou attitude lost me, a long time ago. And as soon as the 360 hardware issues get resolved that may join the WII. But for now, me and my family all enjoy the WII daily. Anyway, how many FPS, racing and sports games can you people play? Expand your horizons!
July 23rd, 2007
I completely agree with this article and have basically detailed your points in many past discussions with people regarding this generations video games.
I definitely know the most people with Wii’s, and PS3 and 360 are about tied. Those Wii owners I know currently only own a Wii but are planning on investing into a PS3 in the near future.
I personally own a PS3 and have no plans to invest elsewhere since I’ve been completely satisfied with my purchase. However, the people that I know that own a Wii, two of my friends and one of my co-workers have all said on repeated occasions that while they like the Wii it hasn’t and will never completely meet their own or any gamers needs. My co-worker is planning on picking up a PS3 in August and one of the two friends is picking up a PS3 before this years end. The other isn’t completely decided on his choice for a second console but he has said it’ll likely be a PS3. I’d also like to add that I know next to know one that owns a 360 which is a surprise seeing that it’s approaching two years of age in November.

Didn’t realize the amount of “I”s being used in my above comment, haha.

To answer the questions of all my readers:
1. Even though I may be a computer geek, yes, I get out quite often. I’m not a sheltered, single fat ass who sits at his computer all day. I go to a college where most people play Halo and overlook the Wii. And I can say “most” because whole buildings of dorms play Halo together on the local LAN.
2. The Wii is selling better than any other console cause of its price. I know that if many people could, they’d buy a 360 or PS3. But they can’t, so they have to wait till prices drop. I’m sure we’re going to see 360 and PS3 numbers rise greatly in the next year and a half.
July 23rd, 2007
The Wii is vastly out selling the ps3 and out selling the 360 by quite a bit. Like some one has said before me how can what this article says be the case if the wii continues to out sell both of the systems. I have a wii and im hopefully getting a 360 soon. But the main reason for this is not because I picked the wii on the side butbecause the 360 has been out longer and it has a larger library of games compared to the wii. The wii now is just waiting for its big hitters to come and other decent third party titles to come out, the ps3 is in the same position. That is probably why “YOUR” mates prefer the 360 as it has a larger and better library of games for tan the wii does. The wii is deffinetely a stand alone console and its out selling the ps3 by a vast margin and the 360 by a small one, its is a bit silly to say that the wii is not a contender in the console wars.
July 23rd, 2007
What a silly article. Hasn’t Nintendo said from the very beginning that they weren’t trying to compete with the 360 and PS3? I mean, of course they ARE, but this theory the guy is trying to introduce has been out there since the Wii was introduced.
But saying “all the people I know who own a wii” isn’t really saying much considering how many people own a wii compared to how many people this guy knows. I know three people who own a Wii besides myself, and none of them plan on buying another console. They all agree with me, if you want better graphics than the Wii, play games on a PC.
I will agree that the PC gaming market doesn’t have competition in the PC realm, but consoles are competing with PC games just because of the nature of what they do… they play games. I still feel that true gamers play on a PC and only casual gamers (no matter how hardcore they think they are) play on consoles.
July 23rd, 2007
You can find the nintendo wii in stock at wiipeddler.com, free shipping no tax, not bad, cant wait for wii fit
July 23rd, 2007
I think what he is trying to say is what has been said all before that wii is for the casual person who is not concerned with graphics and traditional controls but interested by the idea of light and different gameplay. Nintendo has essentially turned their back on the hardcore gamer(come on wii fit? wtf i mean wasnt the fitness part of the wii just a run on joke not to be taken seriously???) and for the hardcore gamer the choices are narrowed down to the 360 or ps3. They have created a corner in the market in which they can only tap into cuz their console is wholly depenent on and made for it. All wii owners know that theyre not gonna prefer motion sensing for the classics like ssmb and mario and there is a reason controllers r like they r becuz they are optimized that way. Motion sensing is fundamentally changing the game that didnt need to be changed gameplay wise and does not help
July 23rd, 2007
Your all Hilarious/mentally retarded. The Wii is straight garbage. Its for children. The vast majority of owners are under 15!!! I rented Marvel alliance for wii and brought it to my friends house when he first got it. 20 mins later I went back and got the same game for PS2. Games not developed specifically for the controller and/or are ports are crap. Of course it is outselling in software titles with as many wii’s that have been sold. yeah that makes sense. Oh yeah.. and the software isn’t even that good. hurrayyyy Mario 37! Again… TO MOSTLY CHILDREN! This guy is dead on with this articule. Nintendo took a game cube and added a witty controller. Kiss my ass Nintendo… that’s cheap! No wonder why is so cheap. Nintendo didn’t do anything but get a different style controller. Sony or Microsoft could have done this to there last gen systems (THANK GOD THEY DIDN’T) This little fad.. novelty.. whatever you want to call it, is not competing with Sony or Microsoft.
July 23rd, 2007
I understand this is all about opinion. But please understand that when you want to voice out a convincing opinion, get some support/proof. Your supports are about your little community of college ppl? Try telling a Japanese about your “opinion” they’ll laugh at you. That says a little local geographic data doesn’t mean anything. Any idiot can find worldwide sales data of all 3 consoles; and the only way to explain those numbers are Wii has been the “Primary” console since its launch, then ppl would pick up a 360/PS3 if they’re rich enough.
I totally agree with Randy the game developer’s comment. (I wonder why no one even talk about it?) In fact it has not much to do with opinion or taste of gaming, its a business afterall. All the news are pointing that PS3 is lossing exclusives (their last weapons remaining are FF13 & MGS4??) 360 is doing ok but it’s not going far.
So if anyone really thinks PS3 will come back…. please face the reality. As a Nintendo fan witnessed the fall of N64 & GC, we know the falling pattern too well. There’s no such thing as “coming back” in game industry, when you’re falling way behind.
July 23rd, 2007
real gamers play on PCs, 360, PS3… no real gamers want to play on Wii unless they’re down to just mess aroudn with it when they’re bored but when they wanna play real games, Halo, MGS4, WOW, Gears of War, Final Fantasy, they turn on a sony or microshit machine
even though I hate microsoft, i have the decency to respect it as a real gaming machine and Halo is a pretty cool game anyways
July 23rd, 2007
The Wii is a game console . . . it plays “video games” . . . MS & Sony are both jealous of its sales . . . MS has supposedly changed its focus to appeal to more “casual” gamers . . . how is it not in competition with these other consoles? I own a Wii, and eventually I’ll buy a PS3 (the only true “next-gen” system). By then, the XBox 2 will be but a distant memory to a bunch of retarded 13 yr old boys with black trench coats, and I will be playing Mario Galaxy or Metroid.
July 23rd, 2007
The top selling game on Wii is …. Wii Sports. It is sold in a great number - 8 million. There is only one problem here. It is bundled with the console. The other 2 top selling games are Wii Play and Zelda. Kick off the first - it is bundled with nunchak additional controller…. so we got only Zelda left. 3.5 miilons disks sold. It is true number. Others are not above 1 milloin in sales. Comparing it to the total Wiis sold worldwide - over 8 millions - it seems that noone is going to buy software for Wii. That proves the author opinion - Wii is just for occasional fun.
July 23rd, 2007
Damn, gunnar lays it down better than I did. Thank you very much.
July 23rd, 2007
Outstanding point Gunnar! Wii is nothing but occasional fun. Hamae your thoughs are complete garbage. I’m 26 and work in IT. People at work in my industry are pretty into gaming and I still talk to the college guys. and what a surprise… not one person has or wants a wii other than to buy it for there kids who are still very young. Too far behind?? lol this is the very beginning of it all. PS3 and Xbox games are where it is at. And since the Xboxes ring of death they are done. Even if they start fixing them now… how many are shipped borken..? so who wants to go out and by one. PS3 will take over. That will leave one console to purchase all the “GOOD” Games on. PS2 sold over 100 million units. That being said, Every gamer has a ps2 library. Probably a big one and they are not gonna let it go to waste. PS3 will be a huge success and Wii will do great as well… but its always gonna be a childs machine. Sonys PS2 sellin as good as the wii right now. When people are ready .. they’ll get a ps3. for the mean time… they’ll dick around with a wii. bla
July 23rd, 2007
lets all laugh at the people that are harping on about the ps3 being a hardcore machine. if u want to keep up ur geeky gamer image get a PC it has better graphics and a much better gaming library. really what is the point in the ps3? A £425 gaming machine to me is just a PC anyway.
u geeks probly never played a true hardcore game like super smash bros anyway. did u know melee on cube sold more than halo? and theres no way Brawl wont outsell halo3. so go back to ur overpriced immatation PCs while i have fun on my Wii
July 23rd, 2007
Dan the man PC and console games have a very different feel from each other. Console games u can play on ur tv (be it fully loaded home entertainment system or 8 inch screen, ur choice), are devoted to games, and u can play them in the comfort of the front room ie couch. The PC is kinda limited on size of screen and unless ur the minority the PC isnt gonna be fully loaded to accompany the games. And to be honest i was really excited about Brawl as are u but i enjoyed the playing it with a controller on the gc but now with the wiimote its gonna become more simplistic and really that series is just too fast to be played with motion sensing. Imo the wii will do the series an injustice

“You people are missing what he said. He didn’t say people don’t buy many games for the Wii, just that it is not their primary gaming device.”
No, you’re missing what THEY said. If the Wii is selling more software than the other 2 then the other 2 CAN’T be the primary gaming device. The gaming device that sells the most software IS the primary gaming device.

“Most Wii games are undeniably collections of mini games at the moment,”
Think again. 7 of the 71 currently available Wii games (in the US) are mini-games. I’m not sure where you heard that MOST are mini-games, but it’s not fact. You may not like the other 64 games, but don’t blame it on mini-games.

look at gunnar’s post and u will see how ur post is not nearly as valid as u think it is
July 23rd, 2007
Look at the sales charts that come out every week and you’ll realize gunnar has no idea what he’s talking about. Wii software is outselling PS3 and 360 software COMBINED.

I have read most of the comments on this page since I am planning on buying a wii and want some info, I already own a 360 which I love purely for the graphics and quality of games. the reason I want to buy a wii isn’t because it is a better console, it is a totally different way of playing games it has a different style to it and it has games that I loved playing as a kid e.g smash bros, mario, I cant play them on a 360 or ps3 just like I cant play halo or metal gear on another console
I’m not a fanboy for any console I will buy any companys console for its own merits and for me that comes down to games and how much fun it is to play
July 25th, 2007
Actually your all wrong. The most software sales are going to the DS and the PS2. Which is exactly why Users will transition from the PS2 to PS3. PS2 is still making great games. Theres no rush. If you think your having your short time in the sun… and it will be short.. you not. Sonys business plan is much better. Waving around that retarded wand will will get very old.

[…] Nintendo Wii not in console war with Xbox 360 and PS3 […]

Who cares who is better or whatever just freaking play the games and have fun u all bunch of losers. By the way the WII rulesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!

I think a lot of people are missing the group of people who have no interest buying an Xbox 360 or PS3 but are interested in Wii. This is a much bigger market than the group of people who considers Wii alongside the other two consoles.
I don’t have the same group of friends as Danny, but among my friends Wii is the primary gaming system. I’m 26, I grew up on Nintendo and switched to my roomate’s PS2 and PC gaming in college. I went to a school known for it’s engineering program, so in college it was all about “hard core” games. But now I’m older and married and so are my friends. We’ve moved on, we’ve got wives and families who won’t put up with us spending hours playing video games every night.
So when my wife (who’s never been a gamer) suggested we get a Wii, I originally said no because I thought it would just get me into trouble. But as more of our friends got them and we discovered how much fun Wii is to play with other people, I decided to go along with it. My wife and I love our Wii because it’s something fun we can do together (Wii has replaced a couple of hours of TV watching per week for us) and do with our friends. I don’t think Xbox 360 and PS3, even with online gaming, can offer that same type of experience.
I don’t think the differences between the systems are so much about how often they’re used, but who uses them and what they use them for. Wii appeals to people who like to use their gaming system as a group activity rather than an individual one. For example, playing sports games with your friends is fun on any system - but that’s because your friends all took the time to get through the learning curve of the game. With Wii anyone you invite over to your house can pick up a controller and learn to play in a few minutes. It’s great for parties and social situations. And watching people play is sometimes as much fun as playing yourself. Wii’s games reflect this mentality - there’s a wider variety of games appealing to a wider variety of interests than the other consoles. I think the market of people willing to shell out $250 bucks for this type of fun is larger than the traditional gaming market.
So in one sense I agree that Wii doesn’t really stack up to Xbox 360 and PS3 for “hard core” gamers. But the big picture is that it doesn’t need to. The market for people looking for a different type of gaming experience is much larger than the market of people looking for better hard core games. Nintendo has taken gaming to a huge untapped market. The “hard core” gamer market will always be around, but Wii may signal the start of it taking its rightful place as a niche in the gaming world rather than the driving force of it.

I agree with some of the points in the article. But some other points sadly are based on any facts.
While the console wars may be between the Xbox360 and the PS3 the dollars spent on video games dont know that.
And while nintendo’s hardware remains by far not only the best selling but also moves the most software, developers (who sadly are in this to make a profit) will turn the majority of their development efforts to the Wii.
At the end of this current generation, noone cares who won or lost, or who had the better harware. Only who has the most sales.

ok lets settle this fanboy argument once and for all
You CANNOT have the wii in the same “war” as the ps3 and xbox360, and why? simple, its not a “gamers” machine. Although I dont like to use the word “toy” as nintendo can be very innovative, the wii is created for an interactive party type of atmosphere. More akin to playing twister than video gaming. The only similarity to the other consoles is theyre video game BASED, but seek a totally different audience. This is proven when you consider gamers absolutely HATE the wii.
In some ways the wii advances gaming being interactive, in others it sends it backwards. The average age of gamers is almost 30, but if the wii had its way, the average would probably be 15.
Interaction can actually have a negative effect on the whole experience, youre too worried or concentrating on the control system, you dont get “into” the character.
Besides, you cant sit with a beeer slouched on the sofa and blast away with the same feeling. Nintendo has never gone for realism in the graphical department, and that spoils it a lot for me.
Good luck to the wii, but as far as the console war goes, its a different system, its not in the same war.

Kalada
I disagree
the 360 may have sold less consoles if you spread the time period than the wii, HOWEVER will have without doubt the best selling game of all time this september. And the line up for the fall/ winter for the 360? I cannot think if there EVER being a lineup for any system or PC or anything, of such high quality.
Many games are also coming to the PS3 (sega rally revo, COD4 etc)
ok, while the wii may have one or 2 interesting games on the “near future” horizon, it doesnt compare. And when you consider halo 3 is the first game in history to be franchized by huge companies (akin to coke etc) you have to ask what developers really look for.
Ill tell you what it is, something nintendo unfortunately lacks, that deep deep DEEP fan base, which adds to the every day Joe that will also play.
Xbox live is untouchable, Sony or Nintendo surely have to admit that. And even if Microsoft end up with less consoles, they will still get more subscriptions……and for years to come.

I find the people saying negative things about the Wii quite funny. They are trying to justify to themselves & us why they purchased a console other then the extremely addictive & fun to play Wii console. Xbox users i can understand to some degree, but the PS3 owners have nothing going for them - high console price, no great games like Super Paper Mario or Zelda & many developers jumping ship to develop for the Wii & Xbox. The Wii is the biggest selling Next Gen console & rightly so becasue after playing all 3 consoles it is the most fun & intense console to play. It suits all ages of gamers & has a veriety of games for all kinds of players & many more coming as developers realise how inexpensive it is to develop for & with a high userbase the likelyhood of getting a good return on their investments is high.
The Wii simply has everything going for it & is the rightfull next gen console winner !

I think that Danni is on to something but I think he has his consoles mixed up. I have seen people run out and buy 360’s on the hype of Halo and been really disappointed. It is simply a run and gun not up to par with PC shooters. Then I see the Blu-ray, I mena PS3 that sits in homes as fantastic blu-ray players. With all of the hype on these systems I see know one really talking about a game for more then three months. Yet I still here people talk about wii sports and Zelda. The best thing that the two HD consoles have offered is COD 4. Another game that plays better on the computer. The wii has everything going for it. Intense long play games like super mario, First person online shooters like MOH, Sports games, Metroid, and casual gaming like none other for people that just want to fire up a game on there lunch break. Plus true backwards compatablity. People have purchased wii’s because they were not satisfied with the other consoles they brought.
If you have a PS3 you can get an XBox arcade for $279 why buy a wii. Since the wii is actually a family console everyone I saw purchased one brought at least another set of controllers. A lot purchased two which makes the wii purchase $370 well within the range of a PS3. Most next gen owners are loners that play online and they rarely purchase another controller. How do I observe this. I work part time at best buy. So I have observed this from the point of a salesman, and outside of old folks the wii is purchased by people that are tired of playing games that cost $59 and emulate games most can play better on a PC. The wii is purchased because they played at a friends house and wanted there own. The hardcore fanbase has been estimated at about 25 million gamers. Sony sold to 120 million gamers. Yes Xbox has a solid Hardcore fanbase but those same people are splitting time with the PC on WOW. this is the main reason that the 360 has not sold well enough for a system with a two year lead. The only company I would not count out is Sony. They have always started out the gate slow. As a matter of fact they never release with more then one great game, this is the best they have every done in the first year release of a Playstation product and the best is yet to come along with the fact that Blu-Ray is king just like when the PS2 came out at the start of the slow adaptation of DVD. Which most people forget was pushed by the relaese of the PS2 which convinced the studios to stop releasing movies on VHS. I see the same happening again.

i own both a XBOX360 and a wii,,, and since i got the wii, the XBOX has been sitting there,,, collecting dust and untouched… xbox games can be really realistic,,, have fantastic graphics and all but they are sooooooooo SOOOOOOOO HARD TO PLAY…. you got to press like 20 buttoms that all work different and its just a pain in the ass…. im sorry but i totally disagree with u… if anything, the xbox is the one that sits being untouched while the wiii is the primary console i and most people play

Go fuck yourself. The Wii has been dubbed the secondary console by all of the “hardcore elitists” that likes games if it has plenty of killing and aliens.
Why do people consider the wii a weaker console?
The xbox has the Red Ring of Death and yet thats overlooked because halo 3 is on the xbox… Who cares about Halo 3.. The main reason buy xbox and halo is to play online. But If i wanted to go online to hear a whiny 13 year old who’s balls havent dropped yet talk about how everyone is hacking him i’d go to the newgrounds forum.
PS3… let’s see whats changed over the years. Ps1 - 3d graphics
ps2 - graphics updated dvd player included… internet(sort of)
ps3 - graphics updated blu ray(steve irwins not gonna like this) internet (sort of)
so lets recap updated graphics and updated movie player and internet(sort of)… for lets see around $800+ AUS (no idea how much american)
when i could get a wii($300 AUS) and 8 games for the same damn price
The wii offers better controls, better price, awesome games (Super Mario Galaxy, Metriod Prime 3, Mario Party, Mario kart, rayman, no more heroes, zelda and tons more)
so why is it a secondary console?
why do retards make threads like this?
maybe because your feeling insecure about buying your console
why is the wii outselling your precious “primary” consoles
xbox and ps3 are just a poor man’s way of playin a good pc…
i’ll let xbox and ps3 fight this battle cos everyone know the wii has one the war….

I don’t understand why it’s so hard to understand that, although the Wii is definitly a gaming console, it has carved out a niche in the gaming market based soley on it’s uniqueness. I agree with the assertaition that a lot of console gamers bought a Wii for the novelty of it, being one of those (I have a 360, my roomate has a PS3 and we agreed we needed a Wii because it is a lot of fun).
What I will say, and this is merely opinion, the strength of the Wii is the gameplay itself. It doesn’t have the titles or the graphics to compete with Sony or Microsoft, but holding that controller in your hand for the first time, you get a feeling of something new. It’s easier to justify spending 250 dollars on the system when there isn’t any real competition.
