Playstation 2 accounts for 42% of video game play in June, Xbox 360: 8%, Wii: 4%
By Danny Mendez
Marketing research company, The Nielsen Co., says the Playstation 2 contributed to the most video game play in June, beating out all the next generation consoles combined.
In a recent press release, Nielsen releases the numbers for total gameplay usage in June in chart form seen below:

Surprisingly, the next generation consoles combined don’t even get close to the Playstation 2’s percentage.
Sony has been mentioning their infamous 10-year plan when asked what they think about the Playstation 3’s poor selling numbers. But if the plan works out as expected, with PS2 users switching over sometime in the next few years, Sony may very well indeed become the market leader.
What many may also find surprising is even though the Wii is giving Nintendo the market leader spot in terms of sales, the Xbox 360 contributed twice as much to the percent of minutes played in June. Excluding the PS3, the Wii is the least played console of all. Perhaps the Wii is becoming nothing but a bookend.
An odd finding is, despite the Wii’s low price, Wii households are more likely to earn over $100,000 in income per year, supporting my theory that the Wii is usually accompanied by another next-gen console in households. Less financially endowed gamers have to save up for only one console that is more up to the task for serious gaming, leaving only the PS3 and Xbox 360 as options.
Unsurprisingly, however, the press release also notes that World of Warcraft and the Halo Series are the most played games on PC with the Sims coming in at third. Warcraft and Counterstrike tie for 8th and the Grand Theft Auto series takes the tenth spot.

Nielsen’s numbers have never actually been particularly accurate, much less based on what’s actually happening. Nielsen’s is like a poll, you only get a very scewed view on things.

okay, i see how Neilson can measure tv ratings as they have Neilson boxes in some housed to gauge. No such box exists for gaming and there is no scientific way Nielson could accurately come to definitive numbers. The fact that xbox live players have logged over a BILLION hours, just on xbox live, has to throw a thorn in their theory. What other console claims to have over BILLION game play hours in the last few couple of years? (and that’s only online gaming) Just another “just wait, the ps3 will be #1 again” story. sony’s “10 year plan” just doesn’t make sound business sense, especially if they plan on making a ps5 before the 10 years is up.
