Nintendo may introduce Blu-ray enabled Wii
An unsuspecting informant accidentally stumbled upon a Blu-ray enabled Wii while visitng Nintendo’s R&D facility. Apparently the bathroom wasn’t that easy to find.
While searching for the bathroom, the unnamed informant took a wrong turn Willy Wonka style and opened the wrong door. Upon entering the room, he noticed a small group of Nintendo employees (engineers?) watching a movie on what looked like a Nintendo Wii. The informant recounted the details to the Sarcastic Gamer, but made it unclear if the movie playing abilites were a hardware add-on, a software upgrade, or a brand new Wii model. Regardless, he took several mental notes about the situation:
- The remote control to control movie playback attached itself to the Wii-mote nunchuck style.
- The drive slot glowed blue while the disc was in but faded to black when the disc was removed
- The Nintendo employees quickly ejected the disc and placed it in what was undeniably a Blu-ray disc case
- There was an extra Wii channel titled “Wii Watch” emblazoned with a Blu-ray logo
This discovery comes after Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime hinted at an upcoming surprise for the Nintendo Wii during a Gamehead interview. “The surprise is coming,” he teased, “by the end of September.”
“I can’t help but wonder,” says the Sarcstic Gamer, “if Sony’s Peter Dille knew about this upcoming feature roll out when he made his now famous ‘HD-DVD dead within months‘ claim a short while ago.”
UPDATE: Just to let my readers know, this information is based on a fake article, so none of this is real. I knew this all along by the way (Translation: I thought it was real). I was just trying to fool you guys (Translation: I let myself get caught up in a “breaking news frenzy” and forgot to check sources). I won’t let this happen again. (Translation: This won’t happen again).

This informant must be wrong. The Wii does not have the HD capability of playing Blu-Ray since it can only perform 480p. The Wii also has no HDMI output jack or capability. It is not Blu-Ray and I bet this story was completely made up.

Yeah ok… because the best way to beat the competitition (i.e. Sony) is to pay them royalties for their BluRay technology? Sure… Btw, Sony has been saying HD DVD (there is no – in either BluRay or HD DVD by the way, check your info next time) is dead since HD DVD was created
Buried.

well maybe the games are 480p but an external drive may allow 1080p movies. its like replacing your nintendo connected to your tv with a more advanced nintendo 64, then wii, etc.

nintendo is wining the console war, if they want to create a new SKU with blue ray so be it
maybe they are thinking in hard core gamers and finally you can spect to have better graphics in your nintendo Wii. well if they release a new SKU more powerfull with blue ray i´m going to sell my Wii and i´m going to buy the new one may be is going to be really funny and pretty interesting to play hard core games with the wii mote controller

Well it could possible be a new model. IF thats the case then the Wii could in fact have blu-ray capabilities with the new model.

i donʻt see Nintendo doing this. why would they screw over the millions that have already adopted the Wii? that doesnʻt make sense.
July 27th, 2007
i thought the Wii graphics card could handle HD graphics but, the cpu wasn’t powerful enough to allow HD games to run at a steady framerate. That’s why HD feature is locked on the Wii.

Well, There were rumours of a HD Wii under works over 2 months ago. So this doesn’t strike me as fake at all. Very plausible to me.
I think that this will definately spell the end for HD DVD and will not necessarily damage ps3 too much as the Wii in simple terms is a novelty and is great for casual gaming but doens’t satisfy the hardcore base. Which is why most people buy a wii and a next gen console.
Sony are hoping that the ps3 will be the next console sitting next to the wii.
Lets wait and see what happens

I know this is fake, but it still excites me now that the HD vs Blu-Ray war is over. They should make a more expensive Wii with the player on it…I would buy one instantaneously!
