This is why the PS3 will succeed and the Wii will fail
The two Japanese video game giants, Sony and Nintendo, have taken almost entirely opposite approaches to the current console war. Nintendo is focusing on the casual gamer and a cheap console price. Sony threw price out the window, focusing on the hardcore gamer and the best technology available to the consumer.
Currently, Nintendo is blowing the competition out of the water, massively outselling the the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Notice that I used the word “currently” in the last sentence, but what will be the console war situation in 2016?
Will Wii gamers still want to play with the same graphics that have been available since the year 2000 while Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers experience mind blowing graphics? Many will argue that yes they will while others will argue that the Wii offers much better graphics than the PS2 (and if it does, it’s just barely).
The reality is that gamers care about graphics. That’s why video cards matter to PC gamers. That’s one of the reasons the original Xbox didn’t sink. Can you imagine what would’ve happened if the Xbox had the capabilities of the previous console generation? What if the Xbox had N64 level graphics?
There are exceptions to every rule, and some will continue to play the Wii no matter what happens. But once prices drop for the other consoles, there’ll be no reason not to switch over to the other side.
Next generation games, like Project Gotham Racing 4, need the capabilities of the other systems. Bizarre Creations, the PGR4 developer, recently announced that it needed the power of Blu-ray and the PS3 in order to create the game they envisioned. They even had to place limits on the game for the 360 as the game data couldn’t fit on a dual-layer DVD.
Many have criticized the PS3’s price, and the main reason that it is so expensive is the built in Blu-ray player. Critics can’t help but point out that Sony over-engineered the product making it way too advanced for today’s mass audience. But that is the reason the PS3 will last through 2015.
Sony’s Jack Tretton responded to the criticism regarding the PS3’s technological sophistication via the NY Times, “If the play was for a couple of years, the answer would be, yes, we overengineered this product, but in the long term, over a 10-year period, this technology will absolutely pay off.”
Sony designed the PS3 for the future, not for the present. In the present, Sony still uses the PS2 to release new games to its established base. Heck, the PS2 accounted for 42% of video gameplay in June while the Wii accounted only for 4%.
“Because we have such a viable format in PlayStation 2,” Tretton said to Tech.co.uk, “and because we look at this in a 10-year product life cycle, we don’t feel like we need to convert every consumer on Day One. We feel that we have the luxury of having that long-term perspective.”
Sony plans to convert these users to the PS3 eventually over the next ten years. Their “present day” console is the PS2, and they’re barely getting started on the PS3. Sony plans to get DVR functions working in the PS3 by 2008, with a TV tuner attachment seeing a release date in Q1 of the year.
With Blu-ray arguably gaining the lead in the HD disc format war, Sony’s console looks more and more like what we’ll be using in the next decade and the Wii’s beginning to appear like something we’ll be laughing at as we play Warhawk 3 in 2016.
Randy Wilson, an industry insider, thinks the war will play out differently, possibly with the downfall of the PS3. He has good reason to think so. Click here to ready why.

do you really think nintendo will not update the wii by 2016. imagine a wii with the processing power of 360 or ps3. Then what would you say?

wayne is right, think of the console nintendo will be able to develop standing on the wii’s shoulders

Why is it that some people are incapable of seeing that the true sticking power of a console is gameplay NOT graphics! Last gen was about graphics, this one gameplay. Xbox and PS have both not bothered doing anything major with their consoles, better graphics, HD dvds and jacked up the prices. However the gameplay is the same and frankly boring. Some games, like Gears of War, have been made brilliantly and to say that it is not a great game, would be a lie but it has been done. I get alot more satisfaction decapitating the bad guys in Resident evil 4 with my wii-mote then i ever got out of the same in Gears of war. I find it difficult to play shooting games on anything other than the wii these days as it seems ancient and i simply cannot play tennis games on anything but wii! Nintendo have set up the wii brilliantly, casual gamers have loads of games to choose from to spend an hour every other day playing but hardcore gamers are not forgotten. Twilight princess was one of the best games i have ever played. I had never played a zelda game before in my life. That takes about 35hrs to complete if you skim through it. Resident Evil 4, 20-25hrs to finish completely. Metroid soon as well.
In conclusion to this long comment, I’d like to finish with this: if PS3 is so well made and for the future, why did it delay the launch to make a poor replica of the wii-mote?
August 1st, 2007
The PS3 will still be around 2016 because that’s how long it will take for this Sony venture to be profitable (ok, I’m exagerating). Sony as stated multiple plans that they expect this console to last 10 years (10 year plan!!).
Nintendo can and probably will release a “Wii 2″, with better graphics and HD capabilities in 5 years… now the question is; if the PS3 sells 35 million consoles in its lifetime (10 years) and Nintendo Wii sell 30 million (5 years), and the Wii 2 Sells 30 million (the next 5 years) then who really wins?
August 1st, 2007
I have to agree with all the comments here. Sure, the PS3 will have long staying power as long as all of its 3rd party don’t bail on it. But the Wii is designed to last about 5-7 years rather than 10+, and its successor will be ready right away for the “current” audience just as the Wii is right now. If so, the hype will be building on Wii 2 just as PS3 finally reaches its full potential, eh?

I would be VERY suprised if the 360 and Wii are still around in 2 years.
Microsoft have already started work on the replacement for the 360, a mere 18 months after it launched. Who wants to bet it will have a Blu-Ray drive, and a fancy 8 core CPU (like the PS3)….

Typically in recent years video games have been marketed with the good ol cheap razor/make money on the blades approach. You sell the console at a loss to make money on the games. Nintendo makes money on everything they sell. As such the Wii cannot fail, because it has already made money hand over fist from day one.
As such, Nintendo can afford to release a new console whenever they want. They can wait until the graphics/hardware technology is cheaper and come out with Wii2. The console generation model is only important when working on the cutting edge, taking losses with new console releases, etc.
When you make money on a product from day one nothing is stopping you from releasing upgrades whenever you want, just take a look at Apple and the ipod.
Sure Sony mave have hardware with some longevity. But nothing is stopping Nintendo from releasing an upgrade at will to compete once the graphic whores get tired of jerking the wiimote around…
If graphics start to reduce the marketshare of the Wii, you can bet Nintendo will come up with a new console that will compete. The success of the current Wii and it’s impact on the bottom line has given Nintendo some breathing room. Which is a good thing, because even if you are not a Nintendo fan, their occasional innovation eventually works its way into everyones gaming. Anyone that brings new ideas to the table is of value.

I think Nintendo has already won this battle due to the fact that they have brought the video console to the non-gamer and at the same time attracted gamers looking for something different as well. I own a gaming PC with a high powered CPU and video card for the purpose of better graphics. I have discovered however that all the life-like graphics in the world do not compair to the Wii experience of being part of the game. If this was not proof enough, my wife who hates video games can not get enough of our Wii. Both my mother and mother-in-law after playing the Wii only once had to own one. I bring the Wii with me to family gathering full of conservative non video game people and it is an instant hit everytime. There is your proof that Nintendo has won the battle by going outside the box and changing the field.

By 2016 PS3 will not be around because Sony will be out of business in 2009.
August 1st, 2007
10 years ago fanboys used to brag they have bigger hard drives than others. Now their bragging right is that they have more CPUs, or GPU, or cell…
August 1st, 2007
haha, @ Cian:….
you say the wii is for hardcore gamers?! and you cite twilight princess as your flagship hardcore game that takes a whopping 35 hours to complete or whatever…. HA. I spent 160 hours on oblivion for the ps3 (its on the 360 as well, i know). and where’s the online gaming wii? i know it’ll get there… someday. but talk about adding replay-ability.
and sure… fine… yeah so nintendo can come out with a new console in 5 years or whatever… but you’re telling me you’d rather dish out 200-300 bucks every few years…. at the same time people complain about the price of a ps3… when its supposed to last a decade. that makes a ton of sense doesnt it.
also… you say that the wii2 can come out with blu-ray installed etc etc… well you forget… if nintendo and MS start adopting blu-ray thats a HUGE HUGE victory for Sony seeing as how its THEIR format. so sure. maybe ps3 won’t make as much money, whatever, but sony does more than just make the ps3, so no skin of their backs i’d say.
and besides, i’m not worried. if you look at all of the features they’ve added to the ps3 in less than a year… just imagine what they can do in the next 10. while nintendo or MS keeps developing new consoles (or fixing old ones… i’m looking at you microsoft), ps3 will just keep evolving to keep up.
August 1st, 2007
In response to a comment above “how about a wii with the processing power of a 360 or ps3″… I would say that half of the gimmick would be gone… and that we would be left with the gimmicky motion controls.
August 1st, 2007
In 2016. Wow… You plan on holding on to your PS3 for that long? Ten years? Ten years??? If Sony won’t be pumping anything out in ten years because of the PS3’s supposed “end-all be-all” tech, you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be buying something newer and flashier from Microsoft or Nintendo.
I don’t know about this ten year plan. You have to assume that “gamers” are still as invested in gaming in ten years. People tend to grow up and find other things to do in life in ten years’ time.
The reality of electronic hardware is that nothing really lasts ten years in this day and age.
August 1st, 2007
We were playing on the N64 10 years ago. Technology just doesn’t stand still, in 10 years time the graphics on the PS3 are going to look rubbish next to what ever else is available
August 1st, 2007
Ya, this blog has got some pionts to think about, but i don’t agree that the Wii will stop selling any time soon. You can’t emphasize the 10 year plan when in ten years there will be new consoles to buy, pshht in ten years we’ll be able to build a machine that is double the PS3 with cheaper hardware even. Yes the PS2 is still selling because it has tons of games, which actually proves your piont wrong about the graphics because PS2 is outselling PS3 and the 360. Why has gaming turned into a huge debate rather than just good’ol times in your house with friends playing games.
August 1st, 2007
Danny, no offence, but you’re an idiot, and obviously a Sony Fanboy (but I guess they go hand-in-hand).
By 2016, there will be a Wii 2 if not Wii 3…with backwards compatibility. Graphics will, no doubt, be much improved, but more importantly imagine the interactive type of gameplay that Nintendo will have developed by then. Imaging how advanced the Wiimote (or whatever they’ll call it) will be by then.
Sony and MS will probably copy (no surprise) what Nintendo has already done. By 2016 you’ll be complaining how Sony and MS’s controllers are so much like 1st generation WiiMote’s and how far advanced the Wii system is, compared to the other ‘also rans’.
August 1st, 2007
This nonsense has been said already and it’s still wrong.
It’s the economy, stupid. Nintendo found and tapped a new market that Microsoft and Sony didn’t think existed. Bottom line: people like this guy (fanboys with nothing better to do than play “who has the bigger graphic card”) have been left behind. You’re old news, past tense and out the door.
2016? PS3 will look like trash in 2016. We’ll be two generations removed from Wii/PS3/Xbox360 and Microsoft and Sony will have adopted Nintendo’s strategy.
“Why?” asks the idiot with the blog. Because there aren’t very many of you. These companies don’t owe you anything. You bought machines from them, but you don’t have as much money as the rest of the human race put together. They’re going to pass you over and go where there’s more dough to be made.
The funny thing is, you guys will fault them for making more entertaining games to appeal to the mass audience, as if these game companies somehow owe it to you to only make the kind of repetitive action games with cinematic landscapes that you deem “worthy.” Please. Grow up folks. Nintendo got it right. Sony and Microsoft got it wrong. Now Nintendo can make gobs of money while Microsoft and Sony play catch-up and you cry about it.

The problem with building a machine with cutting edge graphics and processor power is that the power of them is always increasing. The computer will always have better graphics because game systems are static. I believe the Cell proc is currently faster then intel’s Core 2 Duo, but what about in a year?
What I want to see from Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, is that they adopt some of the computer model and modularize some of the key components. Get a new Video card module and just plug it in. Then they could make games scale to whatever type of system you have. Might confuse the consumers, but it probably could be done in a simplistic way.

This says it all:
PS3 with the power of 50,000,000,000,000 Bytes of data for game content and graphics rendering capability

10 years? What a joke. You think the 5-year cycle will end just because Sony said so?
If Sony appears to be building any momentum in a couple of years (and that’s doubtful as they continue to bleed third party exclusives), you can bet that Nintendo and Microsoft will announce new consoles. Moore’s Law will not be kind to Sony’s 10 year plan.
And, for the mathematically challenged Collin, yes, $250 today + $250 in 5 years
August 1st, 2007
Sigh. It ate my less than sign, and of course there’s no preview button.
That was:
$250 today + $250 in 5 years (is less than) $600 today

Purpose of any business is to make a profit. sony is a long time away from this achievement with their PS3. It does not matter who will have sold more consoles by 2016, nintendo will have made more money, so they will have won.
August 1st, 2007
2016? Hahaha 8 years from now all of these systems will be “ancient” in tech terms. That’s one of the most disillusioned rationalizations on a situation I’ve heard in a long time.

What the hell, Who plays a Wii for more than two hours? I mean I usually play my PS3 for longer than that because it’s fun and doesnt make me tired (waving my arms around in the air like an idiot)
PS3 still had great system seller exlusives such as Killzone 2, MGS4, FFXIII

“the reality is that gamers care about graphics.” wtf! is that shit are you for reals your talking for yourself this dumbass doesnt even know a thing about what makes a game sale or console its not about who has the better hardware its the games that bring ppl in come on if it really was about graphics every console that had superior graphics would have won every console war then lets take some examples
gameboy against neogeo pocket neogeo was superior who won the gameboy because of its games
what about now ds vs psp whos winning? um ds duh because of its games
gamecube had superior graphics compared to ps2 who won ps2 because of its games.
look at every console generation and u will see that every console that had superior graphics would end up biting the dust it was either because there games never appealed to anyone but the same demographics year end!

9,000,000 wiis = $2,250,000,000

Assuming every wii = 250
Ps3 = 600

Wii is a piece if shit. Period. Sony and Microsoft are going to dominate the gaming world probably for a long time, and are going to do well in sales as they both appeal to an array of age groups. For example on 360, you have viva pinata and spiderman etc for younger, developing gamers (as well as some other types of gamers), but then you also have games such as Gears of war and the Halo series for an older, more intense group of gamers. On Wii 85 to 90 percent of the games apply to a younger crowd and are too simplistic for an older generation of gamer to appreciate. The nintendo fanboys/fangirls are going to come to an age (quite possibly soon) and realise, “oh crap, i got the wrong system”. But if you ARE older and don’t mind the Wii’s simplistic stature, have fun making friends with a bunch of 9 year olds, but i think i’m gonna go play 360 and PS3.

Great blog! real debate, I love it!
the way I see it, and I do wear glasses, is that Sony is a very, very, very, very rich company. It has it’s fingers in so many pies, it’s a veritable pie finger monster! It didn’t care about cost! It had so much moolah that it listened to the man who made most of it in the tech devision. He had a dream..
They listened to that mans dream.. and those who know also know that he was quietly moved from the top table of the sony party to the cloak-room, like the flatulent grand-father who got too drunk. But that machine was made. A machine so advanced, no-one knows how to get the best from it! A machine that can evolve! A machine that can help you buy stuff on e-bay! A multi-media extraveganza, a cornucopia of techno-love, if you will…
Bit expensive though..
Bugger.
For once, a company had a zen moment and went with it. It just turned out to be a bloody pricey moment, and the world gasped. For those who think that the wiimote is a fresh idea, ps2 has had loads of direct control gadgets to play games. I owned the golf one and the car one.. flashy controllers were NOT invented by nintendo, they are a part of gaming. Stop being so negative! Guitar hero is a hit for this reason. The game is as basic as buggery. I hope Sony dop well, as I own one and want the flipping games to come out, but I do love my Wii. Sony have a lot to learn from the Wii success, but Nintendo have a lot more to learn from the Ps2 and xbox! Tiger Woods on the Wii is great, but it’s better on-line. Sorry, but it is. Play em all, I say!
August 1st, 2007
This is an outrage. the wii is not even on the same wave length. Nobody cares about sales, the wii is cheaper therefore more ppl will buy it. The ps3 has offers more to people. the graphic capability will certainly last for ten years. when ppl get bored of swinging their arms with the wii remote and get bored of the psone graphics then we can finally say bye bye to the wii. Real games consoles are the ps3 and xbox360, the wii is a mere toy that ppl will get bored of ITS A FAZE!!!. Not much more can be done for the wii in terms of games and graphics, swinging the remote is pretty much it. When ppl want grand theft they no what consoles play it.

@ Mikey,
you are an unthinking, antilogic spewing bot. Your fanboyism is grating and you had no point other than to show off your infantile tantrum. There is no such thing as the “wrong system” if it provides entertainment to the buyer. You sound like a little kid.
August 1st, 2007
Danny Mandez,
Your write-up on the PS3 beating the Wii in the next 9 years is so ignorant I kept waiting for a punch-line.
Here’s your #1 flaw: “but what will be the console war situation in 2016?” Simple: Nintendo will have another console out by then. One with the specs it needs to support whatever amazing gameplay they come up with (virtual reality can’t be too far off). Meanwhile, Sony will be crying for attention to it’s 10-year-old PS3 system, which everyone will be sick of by then.
And consider this: as Sony fails to sell PS3s, developers start to write games for consoles that people actually own (no sense writing games for a system no one owns, right?). This is sending Sony for the spiral they’re currently in: buy our system even though there are no games, they cry, while that very lack of system sales is what’s driving developers away.
This also indicates that another of your points is completely wrong: all gamers care about is graphics. I’ve been playing since the days of NES, and I consider myself a hardcore gamer (having just built my own PC with 4GB of memory and an 8800GTX video card, I know what good graphics are). That said, I’d prefer play Heatseeker on Wii to ANY PS3 game I’ve tried or seen. It’s NOT graphics, and the people who still think it is need only look at how Wii is outselling PS3 by 2.5 to 1.
You are right though, that in 10 years the PS3’s price will be cheap enough to entice everyone. The problem is, it will be competing with the Xbox 720 and Wii II – which will be just as graphically powerful and, at least in the case of Wii II, be twice as much fun to play.
If you sincerely think Sony will outsell Nintendo from 2006 to 2016 (counting only PS3 vs. Wii & Wii II), I’d happily take that bet. Seriously, send me an email at bing11@gmail.com if you want to wager, cause with a 5 million console headstart I’m quite confident in my position.

You guys are really funny…i don’t own a next gen gaming console yet…but to hear you guys talk about the wii like its the second coming is just to hilarious. how long do you think it will take MS or Sony to come out with a motion sensing controller that is better then the wii mote given the processing power of the those consoles. So every time Nintendo comes out with a new console as an upgrade to the wii Sony and ms can match it with out having there install base buy new hardware. Nintendo is still stuck in the old days where you bought a console and you were SOL when a new one came out. I would take a console that you can upgrade over one you can’t any day. You also praise Nintendo for bringing Casual gamers to the game. Well how many games do you think those people are going to buy? Its funny history repeats its self and all you people are too up there on your “game play” high horse to see.

To Bob: “Next generation games….needed the power of Blu-ray and the PS3 in order to create the game they envisioned.”
Bob, there is no “Power” in Blu-ray. Blu-ray is just a way to store data, same as a hard drive or floppy. The only fact that holds true is that Blu-ray can store more data than DVD. The one thing that kind of sucks for the PS3 is that its “power of Blu-ray” actually has a slower read speed than the XBox 360’s DVD Rom. So the exact same game would actually take longer to load on a PS3 than an XBox 360 with the “power of Blu-ray”

@ jack johnson:
Your post is so illogical I just have to beat it apart with a heavy stick.
It doesn’t matter how long it takes MS or Sony to catch up control-wise. They’re PLAYING CATCH-UP. Sony and Microsoft are LOSING right now, yet you talk as if all they need to do to fix their problems is release a new controller. If it were that simple, don’t you think they would have done it already? No – this is a huge gap Nintendo is opening up and to catch up to Nintendo in the new market (which is to say, people smarter than you, of which there are a great many), they’re going to have to wait until their next hardware cycle (after Nintendo has had 5 years to stockpile cash) and then copy the Wii and hope Nintendo doesn’t do any more smart stuff.
MS and Sony are in serious trouble. Sony is losing so much money on the PS3 that every aspect of their massive business is suffering. They fired the guy who’d been running PlayStation from the get-go. That’s how much trouble they’re in. MS can weather mediocre performance from the Xbox 360 and come out punching in 5 years, but they don’t WANT to.
At least MS isn’t selling Xbox 360s at a loss of hundreds of dollars per unit…
That’s right kids: every time you buy a PS3, Sony LOSES 200 bucks. Oh, wait, 300 bucks now, because their machine was SO expensive they had to bribe people with 100 extra dollars off…and they STILL can’t sell the things!
They thought 3rd party game licenses would make up for it, but their machine is so expensive that they have no installed base and they can’t get any licenses. They’re even losing the ones they had! Now they’re the ones that are “SOL.”
Gosh you Sony fanboys are stupid.

“Will Wii gamers still want to play with the same graphics that have been available since the year 2000 while Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers experience mind blowing graphics?”
The ignorance of that statement in implying that Wii graphics are equal to N64 graphics is probably the stupidest thing I have ever read.
August 1st, 2007
The title of this article is very misleading. Sure, PS3 will be around for 10 years. But like the PS1 and PS2, they lasted (and for PS2 still are) for over the 5 year mark. So I can see a PS4 coming out in 5 – 6 years time, and the PS3 will still be around then (much like the PS2 and PS3 thing happening now) for 10 years. But it will be cheaper and have more games. So yes, PS3 will still be made and games being developed for in the next 8 or so years, but the PS4 will be out before that .. unless PS3 flops by then

..every aspect
..EVERY ASPECT?!
ps2?
blue ray?
since when is ps2 not turning hella more profit than both the 360 and the wii?
..haha and earlier i saw some other moron that actually thinks sony will die by ‘09
you are RETARDED if you think sony is IN DANGER, damn wake up.

It isn’t graphics that are making the wii sell now…
August 1st, 2007
“Last Thursday Sony posted an operating loss of $237 million for its games division, a figure mainly attributable to the fact that the company has priced its PlayStation 3 console lower than its production cost. It is widely estimated that the Japanese firm currently incurs a $200 loss on every PS3 unit sold” – next gen biz reports
those who say this is not affecting other divisions of the company are wrong. $273 million is a lot for any company to lose. like i said before, business is about profit. without profit, you’re losing. you can speculate all you want about who will win in the future, but in numbers nintendo is the clear winner so far. people who try to predict the future of these consoles can only be biased because how can they know how the market will respond. it’s all speculation. i own a high end pc, a 360, and a wii. i can tell you that the only reason i get the latest video cards is because the new games require them to run smoothly, not because i care about the graphics. i play my 360, but not nearly as much as the wii. and no i don’t play with 9 year olds. i enjoy it because it is something my wife and friends like to do with me. believe it or not… the wii has a market and those who flame it are in denial.

Everybody here is a dumbass. Buy what you like and play it. Who gives a rats ass who will sell the most? OH I KNOW, the people who makes these games. Are you lowlifes Sony, MS, and Nintendo executives?
No. Buy what you like and enjoy playing it without pissing other people off.
BTW, this article sucks. It’s too random without any real facts.

AGAIN, NOTE THE POTENTIAL POWER OF THE BLUE-RAY:
50,000,000,000 BYTES OF HIGH DEF CONTENT FOR MIND-BLOWING GRAPHICS
“Next generation games, like Project Gotham Racing 4, need the capabilities of the other systems. Bizarre Creations, the PGR4 developer, recently announced that it needed the power of Blu-ray and the PS3 in order to create the game they envisioned. They even had to place limits on the game for the 360 as the game data couldn’t fit on a dual-layer DVD.”
SCEA spokesman Dave Karraker, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz.
“Next generation games simply need more space on the disc to contain all that high definition content. Take a look at Lair, for example, already pushing 25GB of content, and that is a first-generation title. At 50GB storage capacity, Blu-ray gives the PS3 plenty of headroom for developers to fully realize their visions well into the future.”
Bizarre Creations, the developer of PGR4, recently announced on its forums that players would not see different times of day in each racing location, not because it was a problem for the development team, but because it was a problem to fit the texture data on a single DVD

THIS ARTICLE IS AN OUTRAGE….!
The Wii will never die,
It will just fade…away,
When the fad wears off….

Maybe by 2016 it will be more affordable

I would agree that some people really care about graphics, they want a totally immersive experience (bad translations and bad voice acting aside).
If the game industry is to mature however, then gameplay must evolve, and the Wii could the the catylist.
Thing is – there are not enough games fully utilising the funtionality of the Wii.

The flaw in your thinking is that one must succeed “over” the other.
The Wii has already succeeded. It has infiltrated retirement communities, amusement parks, gyms, and other sectors previously impervious to console penetration, in addition to the homes of gamers of all stripes (not *all* the gamers of all stripes, but enough across the spectrum to keep it selling out 9 months after its release).
What’s more, Nintendo is actually profiting on these sales. They’re getting mind share and profit. Cake is delicious when you get to eat it, too.
That’s not to say that the PS3 is doomed to failure. It’s stupid and short sighted to assume that one company’s success requires the failure of another.
Sony’s a big enough company to take the lumps that it is taking. It is a very strong machine, and as prices come down and features get added, people will buy it. It could easily become a retail success, in spite of Sony’s tremendous gaffes thus far. Even taking the kind of losses they’re taking, if the PS3 helps Blu Ray win the day, it will be worth it for Sony.
However, in the meantime, the Wii will maintain its base of consumers that have an attention span longer than 12 seconds. Add to that the PS3 (and XBox360) owners who also own a Wii for the difference in gaming experience, and you have an unqualified success.
As for 2016, Nostradamus, try this on for size…
With the combined profits of the Wii and DS, Nintendo will be able to afford to sink those profits into developing the next generation HD console, which they’ll release… oh…. right about the time that the majority of consumers *actually* own an HD TV, and which, based on Nintendo’s past and current release strategies, will be relatively affordable, will play Wii titles, and thus will be an easy upgrade for all those Wii owners out there (including those who own a PS3).

It’s “articles” like this that make you look like a buncha punk kids rambling. Lately your newsletter has been hitting my “spam” box, I guess this is why. Too many other people have been marking it as such. Not only is your article poorly written, it is poorly researched. It would be better served to have conflicting points of view to show all sides of the story. The easiest conflicting comparison to consider is what happened to an earlier “console” application about 25 years ago, probably before you were even born. This console was like a Tivo but instead used removable tape-”drive” cartridges. And yes, there were two manufacturers of competing systems, and really there was no comparison between the two. Most of the tech geeks LOVED the more expensive product because it was truly superior in quality and was worth every penny for the improved performance over the cheaper product, in their minds. However, it was the cheaper product, VHS, that won the home video-cassette recorder market, and the more expensive product, Betamax, lives in infamy as how NOT to market a product. It’s unlikely that the PS3’s shadow will ever eclipse that of Betamax, but it is doing a fine job of falling under it.

damn my long post didnt get posted…unless i cant see it. sigh, dont want to retype. n e ways 1. article sucks, 2. wii will sell very well no matter wat, 3. graphics arnt everything, if they were every one would buy a PC but they dont cause the price buts even the ps3 price to shame. 4. system graphics are already out of date. PS3 with a 7800GTX is old, no directX 10 and with the 9 series comin out its already old. 5. ppl talkin about blu-ray like come on you think disks will last? nintendo and MS cant use blu-ray so they will more then likly use flash cards or mini hard drives. flash cards can hold wat 8GB, now imagine in 5 years or so when the next system comes out. games are already comin out that are on the HD instead of discs. i think that was everything. i think there was somthin about some one giving the example that oblivion was more hardcore the zelda cause it was 160 hours or somthin….guess pokemon must be the most hardcore game out there, so far 200 hours in an not even close to being done 100%. actually if you truly get into pokemon its very complex, most ppl will probably laugh but then they havent seen through the child image of the game, but thats another story.

Economics would appear to contradict your blog comment. There is no point building a console for the future because a consoles life span is about 3-4 years.
If a console is not doing well by the 2nd year, in terms of units sold then development houses tend to drop support for that platform. I would not be surprised if some of the 2008 games for ps3 simply disappear. Its all numbers why would I develop a game that can only sell x number of units when another platform allows me to sell x * 5?
Its not like a software house can triple the price of its games to make up for the lack of consoles sold.
Sony and the PS3 team have decided to target hardcore gamers, however it has and always been the mainstream that fuels how successful a company is.
Nvidia sells massively high priced high end cards but I bet the numbers show more people buy the mid range cards than those. Seriously you can’t be considering that high end gamers are propping up Nvidia?
Sony (PS3) went for eye candy but Nintendo went for play/fun factor. Sony misread the market and so did Xbox360. Considering the number of people who play retro games (MAME) should already tell a company that people prefer (always) good game play over graphics.

units sold in billions USD
9,000,000 wiis = $2,250,000,000
4,480,000 ps3s = $2,688,000,000
Assuming every wii = 250
Ps3 = 600
Nintendo make profit on every machine Sony make a loss on every machine. I think you need to redo the math.
Nintendowned!

Just because the PS3 will have a 10 year life cycle does not mean the PS4 won’t be available in 2012. Ever since the release of the PS2 Sony has always focused on two models at the same time. The PSOne was not retired until 2006, then the release of the PS3.
To those who think there will be a Wii 2 that will come close to the capabilities of XBox or PS3 you’re joking yourself. Nintendo can’t compete with Sony or Microsoft at a higher price point, which is why they took an innovative approach.
Lastly, does anybody ever look to history? There will be no console war winner… in fact there is no console war. Each gamer will choose which model best suits there gaming style and then a few years down the road newer consoles will be released without a declared winner on the quote-unquote CONSOLE WAR.
With that said… Wii will outsell the 360 and PS3 until next holiday season, then, just like every other fad, gamers will go back to traditional gaming. Next holiday season PS3 will surpass 360 sales and continue to do so until Microsoft retires the XBox and moves into software only, developing games for the PS4. Bill Gates has already said the 360 is the last Microsoft console.

Interesting points of view, I dont own these consoles but have played them all, and many games as well. For the price point I’d go for the wii because although the graphics are not the best the gameplay is awesome. I dare you all to answer if you have played pacman or any other old game. The graphics are horrible but I can bet you many people still play them. Of course Ps3 has awesome graphics, but if the gameplay is boring or repetitive you end up with a pricey machine that will be put away after you’re done with the games. If you want to see great graphics go watch a the newest CGI movies out they look way better believe me. Game companies are about the money and believe me sony is not sitting around seeing how its machine is not profitable. Proof of this is are the 100 dlls cutbacks even when they dont make any money out of them. I think you can do whatever you want with your money, the companies win at the end.

ok i love coming to these places cause it seems that the head lines always attract the opposing views of what it is written about. it is funny to see a bunch of wii owners squabble about the words on their screens haha. i don’t own any of the “next-gen” consoles but plan on buying a PS3 just because i can already play the other two at my friends houses. i would actually love to own all three of them because they all have there goods and bads. but most of you people are re-dunk to the max. lol don’t expect me to com back here and look at you fuming about this comment lol i will just laugh and forget about this.
