Wii down, PS3 up, is this a porn-fueled comeback?
It’s widely recognized that if a gaming console is going to be a major player in the world market, it needs to make it in the intensely competitive Japanese market. Sony has received a major boost with the latest sales figures from Media Create showing that twice as many PS3s were sold in Japan in the last week of July, compared to the week before. Wii sales were down a little during the same period.
Interestingly, the PS3 sales increase comes just as the Japanese porn industry has decided to go with the Blu-Ray HD DVD format after Sony offered a higher level of technical support to the industry. While Sony maintains that it won’t actually manufacture porn Blu-Ray DVDs, porn companies have found found a Taiwanese company with the necessary equipment that has no qualms about making porn.
The PS3 has Blu-Ray support built in, so could it be that the PS3′s sudden and surprising sales increase is due to the new found support of the porn industry?Â
However, before PS3 fanboys start celebrating too much, it must be noted that while Sony sold almost 29,000 PS3s, Nintendo still managed to sell 77,000 Wiis – yes more than twice as many.Â
Sadly for Microsoft only 4000 Xbox 360s were sold, which clearly shows that Microsoft’s gaming console is only a very niche player in the game-mad Japanese market.
In the handheld gaming market, Nintendo sold 150,000 DS handhelds, while Sony sold just 35,000 PSPs.
With the PS3 possibly on the verge of a porn-fueled comeback I do have to pose a very serious question. While the Wii allows users to use hand motions to control games, will the PS3 soon be encouraging an altogether different kind of hand motion?

HD HENTAI!…?…
Wii will have the same hand motion in “No More Heroes”, but you use the Wiimote; not your “Wii”. Only down fall to this… The main character’s moves are inspired by oily men… not oily women…
Also unless this means they’re allowing Blu-Ray porn in other countries I doubt this will be big outside of Asia… pun intended…

Porn has been available on BluRay in Japan for over a year. The sales spike was for the new Hot Shots Golf game. Try a bit of research next time.
For all those people who think otherwise, porn is also available in the US on BluRay. Porn will play no part in the success of either HD format because its available in so many other formats. The reason it was a major factor with the success of VHS was because previously you could only watch it at home on a projector.

does the writer of this article realise how fast the net is in japan?? streaming internet is effortless.. stupid article – it has nothing to do with porn.. more to do with hotshots and effective price cut..

How could a slight decrease in the Wii be due to something happening on HD DVD or bluray when the Wii doesn’t use either?
I think the PS3 is helped by being a reasonable bluray player, but I don’t think the Japanese porn industry makes it twice as populat all of the sudden.
However, I wouldn’t think a game would, either, at that price, so you never know.

They released “Debbie Does Dallas: Again” for Blu-ray in the states. I was gonna buy it, but 40 dollars is too much for a porn movie. There might be some things you don’t wanna see in hi-def.

This entire entry is based on a faulty premise. The PS3 sales doubled, and the Wii’s sales did slow somewhat, but that’s only in the last week of the month, and the Wii’s edge even in this cherry-picked week were roughly 3-to-1. In other words, in a single week of a single month, the Wii outsold PS3 3-to-1 instead of 4-to-1. And that’s hailed as a “comeback”?
My, how standards have changed for Sony.
