$50 Xbox 360 price cut is official

$50 Xbox 360 price cut is officialThe rumored Xbox 360 price cut is now official, taking effect August 8th, and the Halo 3 themed Xbox 360 gets a price with package details.

Microsoft issued a press release today detailing price drops according to each Xbox 360 console. The Premium will drop $50 to $349. The core console will drop $20 to $279, and the Xbox 360 Elite console will drop $30 to $449.

Microsoft implies that the price drop comes as a result of the release of the next installment in the Madden NFL Football series, but I think the conspiracy theorists on the web would agree that it might have a little to do with the release of the 80GB Playstation 3 model released a few days ago. Regardless, Mitch Koch, corporate vice president, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft, couldn’t help but brag that his company held out from issuing a price cut for so long:

“The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360. On the eve of the best holiday games lineup ever and the launch of ‘Madden NFL 08,’ there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360.”

He may be right, but I’m thinking that it’s the right time to jump into 360 land not because of Madden but because of the long awaited release of another Xbox juggernaut, especially after Halo 2 left gamers hanging in what seemed like the middle of the game (which obviously turned out to be the end of the game).

The Halo 3 themed Xbox 360, which will run for $399, includes a matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 20GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Headset, an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit, and “more”.
