The Revolution: Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

August 6, 2007

The Revolution: Marvel vs. Capcom 3?Back when my Dreamcast was relatively new, I decided that I wanted to buy my first game for the system. Fate focused my attention on the box of a marvelous (pun intended) game, Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I decided to give it a shot. Although not consistently, I still play the game to this day. My curiosity as to why I haven’t heard a thing about a third installment in the series led me on an Internet journey during which I discovered some interesting information regarding the game.

First, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a difficult find, and when it is found, you’ll find yourself paying at least $80 to own a used copy of the Playstation 2 game. Expect to pay three figures for the Dreamcast version. Keep in mind, the game originally retailed for $50.

Second, Apparently Capcom no longer owns the rights to Marvel characters, with the rights belonging to EA. We’ve seen what EA can do with a Marvel fighting game. EA can’t handle the absolute power Marvel rights hold, producing the crappy Rise of the Imperfects fighting game. According to some Playstation.com forum talk, it’s Marvel’s fault Capcom no longer has the rights to the game. Marvel increased the licensing fees with the recent success of its films. As a result, Capcom can’t afford to make a Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Third, and this is a realization made by me, if used versions of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 start at $80 on the web, Capcom can easily charge the same for a third installment to the series. There are countless MVC2 fans across the net who are starving for number 3. Better yet, offer the game as a direct download from the Playstation 3 store and Xbox 360 Live store and Capcom doesn’t even have to deal with the cost of producing physical discs and boxes. This would at least partially offset licensing fee costs. When you play the game with friends, MVC2 has nearly endless replay value. Add online versus play for MVC3 and Capcom would give the game infinite replay value, justifying an $80 price tag. Doesn’t mean an $80 price tag is good, but if that’s what’s necessary, that’s what’s necessary.

Fourth, there’s an ongoing online petition for a MVC3 game at PetitionSpot.com.

Fifth, News for Gamers, or N4G.com, has a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 listing, but you won’t find anything under any of MVC3 the tabs. You can check out the listing here.

Sixth, I contacted a Capcom rep to inquire about any possible plans regarding MVC3 and this is what she said: “Capcom has not announced any plans for another Marvel vs. Capcom game.  We have no further details to share.” What a cop out.

Now, if we want to create a revolution to get Capcom to create a third Marvel vs Capcom, we’re going to have to show them we want it. So I suggest a plan. Forget the petition; it’s been going on since ‘05 and it’s gotten nowhere. I want you guys to digg, blog, email, and spread this story to the farthest corners of the internet, and, after digging the story, send these people emails whenever you can telling them that the public wants some HD Marvel vs. Capcom 3 action:

blerougetel@capcomeuro.com

Kramer@capcom.com

AliciaK@capcom.com

Just absolutely flood their inboxes with requests for the game, and if you know the email addresses of any more Capcom people, list them in the comments so others can email them too. Dammit, let’s start this revolution.

Would you rather hear that or have everyone lie about things like Sony? I’d rather hear read “no comment” and not know if its true than to read “There will be MVC3,” want it, and then find out that they lied because the person asking was going to get smart if they said “no comment.”

Also, about your third point, I would hate to see anyone start charging that much for a game. You know what happens then? The lemmings of the industry (and there are more of them than leaders) start saying “hey, I can charge $80 for my game too!” Heaven help us if every game with multiplayer (which all have almost endless replay value if you play with friends) starts charging $80, but that’s what the lemmings would do.

Also, somehow, it doesn’t suprise me EA owns the rights…they own the rights to everything they can get their hands on, if for no other reason, so they can block other people from making a game.

Maybe we will get another one, but hopefully not a $80 game that we’re lied to about so Capcom can avoid telling people they have no comment.

I didn’t want to indicate that it’s OK to charge that much, I was just trying to imply that it would be worth the $80, especially if that’s the starting price for used copies of MVC2. I don’t think anybody would be crazy enough to offer a game at that price. I think the hardcore fans would buy it (which would include a lot of people), but that’s not who game makers are after. Game makers are after the mass public and if it doesn’t appeal to the mass public (and I don’t think any game at $80 would appeal) they don’t want it.

  3. Danny Mendez:

By mass public, I mean mass public of gamers

I believe that if CAPCOM were to decide to make another Marvel vs CAPCOM 3 game, we’d definitely see it before it’d ever hit consoles. Capcom has a strict and consistent way of releasing their fighting games as arcade games and then releasing them to the public. Another thing is, just because of the popularity and the rarity of a prequel to a game that “may” come out is extremely high, that wouldn’t make the new one more expensive than other games on the market. If you look at certain RPGs, like Chrono Trigger and Valkarie Profile, the sequels were priced competitively with other games in it’s market. If it’s a popular game, it’d probably fetch a 70 price tag because they wanted to make it’s a “Collectors Edition.” For a regular for next gen systems, it’d probably on be 60. And with my expectations and my views of trends when it comes to 2d games from capcom, they typically come out at around 39.99 or 49.99. I don’t expect another one anytime soon because the Marvel License is with EA, and I believe EA has a ten year contract. But remember how long ago the MVC2 game came out. It’s been a while. Let’s see how much longer EA has it, and who will snatch it up after EA.

No shame in being honest the price you except is merely a reflection of your desire to play. No doubt such a price would be unjust but the men who take the time to inquire about a third instalment are merely fanatics. Theres 2 types: hardcore marvel fan or dont give shit gamers, thats it with no in between this is a game you either luv or hate. I would pay any amount and buy any system with out hesitation for a chance to play a 3rd installment. The truth is you dont have to worry about any other $80 games because with the exception of a killer instinct 3 or MvsC3 no one would ever pay it.

Man EA Games is trash Ill Pay 150 for Marvel vs Capcom 3 but it has to be owned by Capcom cuz capcom make some bad ass games no one can fuck with capcom u bitches

    Jose

  7. Rorkimaru:

no one will pay $80 for a downloadable game. thats insane. the only way id concider it is if its a MGS instalment or a grid based tombraider. just because they are better than heroine with no side effects.

im sure you like the game a lot but few people would pa for my 2 $80 games. if they want real profit sell more at less cost. for $20 i would try the downloadable game and im sure for every fan at least 4 more like me would download it. thats $100 per sale at $80 plus the fans would be happier

If here is a revolution being planned to get MvsC3 going I’M ALL IN!! This franchise was too great to let a thing like this happen to it and we as the fans have been waiting too long. Let’s get EA, which has done everything to destroy the Marvel fighting, to relinquish their rights to Marvel and Capcom to re-acquire them. We need to know who to contact at EA and Capcom to get this in progress!!!
