Nintendo forgets its roots: PS3 and Xbox 360 are legacy of SNES
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto attempts to defend the Wii’s casual gaming approach to the video game industry in the latest issue of Famitsu. Unfortunately, he forgets how his company became so big.

Miyamoto’s Famitsu interview is full of typical BS public relations crap. He spins everything good and bad to make the Wii seem like a work of genius. Then again, without PR, we get David Reeves type incidents.

Regardless, Miyamoto states that we need need games that are more fun and less difficult to play, such as the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy. Miyamoto forgets that it’s exactly the opposite that made Nintendo so big.

It’s games like Contra, Super Mario Bros., and Mega Man that helped the NES and SNES reach their ancient but ultimate status in the gaming world. These games were by no means easy. In fact, Contra III is the hardest game I’ve ever played, and I don’t think I’ll ever beat it.

Again, Contra III was innovative in that it introduced new ways of playing the side scrolling shooter not seen before, such as the overhead view in some levels. Yes, the Wii is innovative but by no means is it cutting edge, and Nintendo has forgotten that it’s needs both in order to reach legendary status.

It is actually the PS3 and Xbox 360 that are the product of the SNES and NES. Those consoles continue the tradition of providing difficult but fun games. Those are the games we come back to night after night or week after week.

Nintendo has lost sight of its audience, leaving us to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Focusing on casual gaming may bring success but it will never produce any legendary titles, the likes of the Halo series, the Gran Turismo series, the Mega Man series, and all our favorites from past consoles.

“Nintendo has lost sight of its audience, leaving us to the PS3 and Xbox 360. ”

While you’re right to a certain degree, I think that Nintendo’s “audience” was abandoning ship for the playstation brand pretty heavily back in the N64 era. It only got worse for gamecube. So Nintendo was somewhat forced to look elsewhere for revenue. You have to admit, Nintendo had a better shot attracting new gamers and lapsed gamers then they did of trying to pry the hardcore out of Sony and MS’s iron grip. Can you blame them? Look at what MS and Sony are willing to spend to fight for the hardcore. Its a damn lot of money. In my opinion, the hardcore are much like a ballooning stock. They are overvalued and in this gen, we are seeing that bubble burst a little bit.

  2. Siege:

I’m still not totally convinced that Nintendo have abandoned hardcore gamers, or oldschool Nintendo fans for that matter, and what Miyamoto is saying here still isn’t enough to make me think so. Hardcore gamers can enjoy casual games, sure, and casual gamers will obviously enjoy fun, less than challenging titles, but there will be a lot of games coming out on the Wii. It’s just hard to believe that none of those games will appeal to the core gamer. Look at Prime III, or Brawl. It couldn’t be to hard to have a difficulty setting on something like Mario Galaxy: Easy for casual gamers, Hard for Hardcore gamers. Doing something like that could even give a more casual gamer a chance to become more of a core gamer by wanting to complete a game on its hardest difficulty setting.
I grew up with Nintendo and I’m just not ready to believe they aren’t going to provide my kind of games anymore.

  3. dan:

yes because like the snes/nes the 360 and ps3 are devoted games machines that give simple yet entertaining fun for a reasonable price tag…….. wait isnt that the Wii???
oh i remember now the 360 and ps3 are imitation PC’s that are getting more and more out of the reach of a normal console gamer and supplying technology we probably dont even want or need. not only that there bankrupting game developers with there over the top graphics.
Nintendo has done with the Wii what it has done with every console. made a console with improved graphics, innivotive control scheme and fun games. How about we actually look below the surface and realise nintendo is supplying some of the most respected hardcore games on a system that doesnt break the bank (mario galaxy, metroid, super smash bros anybody????)

  4. jimi:

    Nintendo has dropped every gen.
60 mill, 50 mill, 30 mill, 20 mill, and now the wii
maybe they will go back up?
i think nintendo lost it with the n64.
i loved castlevania, and goldeneye was a great fps, but the n64 needed more. mario games were funner as side scrollers.
when i was younger i loved super mario brothers, but the newer ones are less and less fun.

  5. dan:

oh and dont u think that this is just nintendo being realistic?, ever heard of 3rd party sorftware developers?
Microsoft has Halo, and sure it sells well, but Smash bros melee outsold Halo1, and nintendo has metroid as an alternative.
We have all seen the success of games like The Sims, Brain Training, Animal Crossing. If you think sony and microsoft are going to sit still and not copy Nintendo, your fooling yourself. Microsoft has as much as admitted it is developing and gearing games towards casual gamers after seeing the success of Wii.
Hardcore gamers will always have the likes of Resi Evil, but ur gonna have to get used to being the minority now and if u want such games then u’ll av to just be happy with wot u get. The Wii is the most popular games machine of this generation and as such is providing the most varied games and therefore hardcore games.
All im hearing is Booo Hoo, Waaa, ive spit my dummy out the pram because im not getting exactly what i think i want. I consider myself a Hardcore gamer but then i can see past graphics and the true potential of Wii and realise its by far the best console with the best choice of games. Or at least it certainly will be

  6. dan:

yes the wii is next gen, makes playing a 360 feel ancient with its controller that hasnt changed since last gen, PC in disguise with less options. The fact every1 is so obsessed with Halo just goes to show its limited game selection, no wonder 360 owners are so desperate for ps3 castoffs like GTA and metal gear.

  7. dan:

i could post a very long list of AAA games for wii, by limited im not saying the 360 doesnt have alot of games im just saying there not varied.
yes Wii has weaker graphics and and maybe they do look ancient but the controls are very next gen, something the 360 cannot boast. after all im not the one that said any of the 3 werent next gen. just proving the Wii is.
U reckon the next xbox might use motion controls? i think so.
nintendo innovate while others copy. we all know each gen you improve graphics but you also innovate with controls. like nintendo did when it was first to impliment the d-pad, anologue stick, motion controls, touch screen……………..

  8. Wiggy:

    >> The Wii is the most popular games machine of this generation

    > Technically speaking, it’s not next gen.

But it is next generation. We are currently in the 7th generation of game consoles, which consist of the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and the Nintendo Wii. So yes, it’s next generation.

    >> I consider myself a Hardcore gamer but then i can see past graphics

    >So you’re a hardcore gamer and don’t care about the graphics?

This is what is called “putting words in my mouth”. You’re assuming that because one states that graphics aren’t the all-important factor to a game being good, one also doesn’t care about the graphics being good at all. Games aren’t just about graphics. They never have been, and never will be. Why is the Nintendo DS so much more popular than the PSP? Certainly not because of graphical capabilities.

    >> the true potential of Wii and realise its by far the best console

    >Are you sure about that?

Do I even have to say anything about this? That isn’t even an argument! It’s backtalk for the sake of balktalk. Yes, the true potential still is yet to be realized. I dream of the day when the perfect arcade-style sword-fighting game is released for the Wii. Truly revolutionary. Besides, have you even played the Wii yet? The games are fantastic, particularly Super Paper Mario, Excite Truck, and Twilight Princess.

    >> with the best choice of games.

    >Are you very sure about that?

Once again, there is no point to this argument. It’s a very defensive statement because you realize there is no argument to the current library of games. Yes, the Wii has the best choice of games. How? Let’s see now…110+ downloadable games on the Virtual Console (with many, MANY classics), a constantly growing library of exclusives for the Wii…seems very solid. And how would you explain that the Wii is only a few thousand consoles away from outselling the Xbox 360? I believe we have our answer.

    >> Or at least it certainly will be

    >Pure speculation.

You’re speculating that he is speculating speculation. Check out games coming out in the near future: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime 3, Guitar Hero III (although it is a multi-platform release), Tenkaichi 3, a new Zelda game being developed already, and many more classics in the Virtual Console. Not speculation but reality, pal.

  9. Wiggy:

“You’ll also find in the last week it was widely reported that only 11% of 360 games are fps’s.”

While true, a lot of other games are third-person shooters, so this claim doesn’t help your case. Need an example? Gears of War. Need proof? Here:

yet its the only console with 100% backwards compatability even to the point of playing games from the nes and even other systems like the mega drive. thats called embracing and celebrating its roots

  12. Wiggy:

I agree. This guy probably never knew you could download Virtual Console games. And look! All his posts are gone! He cowered away.

  13. sid:

Don’t get me wrong, but this is a very lame article. It reeks of a PS3/360 fanboy… some one who is reaally fustrated by the success of the Wii. I am an XBOX user, who is ready to accept that yes, the 360 while it has really good graphics capability, doesn’t hold a candle to the wii in terms of sheer mass appeal. Just see how much the Wii has dominated the news (google news is full of it). While 360 owners like me are just worried when I’d see the dreaded RROD

Wii is stealing all the casual gamers from Playstation, most people who prefer the 360 are there because of the functionality of xbox live which is by far and away the best online gaming experience. I have both a wii and a 360 and although there are several decent games on the wii that I enjoy I find myself choosing the 360 when I buy a game that is multiplatformed, such as today when I picked up Madden. So far I have only played 2 games on the wii that I think are truly for an advanced user (paper mario and zelda) after that name something else. This holiday season xbox still has the best lineup of any console. And nearly all games have online multiplayer so I can essentially sit there and play with all my friends and chat on the headset at the same time.

Seeing that you have this extraordinary gift of telling the future, why don’t you let me in on next week’s lotto numbers while you’re at it? It’s a real shame Nintendo can’t produce legendary, immortal titles like Halo, GTA and Gran Turismo, eh? $#%! that Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros. and Metroid Prime bullcrap!

In all seriousness, you do have a _small_ point somewhere in there but mostly you’re just talking out of your ass and sensationalizing things. Look at Nintendo DS, which brings us best of BOTH worlds, casual gaming and excellent hardcore gamer titles as well. As long as Nintendo sticks to the plan they’ve got going with the DS, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. If they abandon their original audience someday, I will abandon ship and curse them to the lowest hell, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen in the foreseeable future, seeing we’ll soon get our hands on Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, new Mario Kart, Battalion Wars 2, Disaster, etc, etc, etc. And all these are just from Nintendo. And remember, accessible and newbie-friendly doesn’t necessarily have to mean ridiculously easy, simple and shallow. I’m sure there’ll be control/difficulty settings to choose from for BOTH hardcore and casual gamers in some of these titles.

  18. Jonathan2:

Totally biased, limited, semi-idiotic opinion. The Wii actually has Contra III on the console! How is that alienating fans of games like Contra III?

Contra, Mega Man, and Super Mario Bros may have been hard, but they only took 2 buttons and a control pad to play. That’s the kind of difficulty Miyamoto wants on the Wii, not 6-8 button, two control stick complicated, difficult due to control not due to gameplay you get on the PS3 and 360.

Making games more and more complex and difficult to contorl was killing the industry. The Wii’s success speaks to that truth. There is of course room for the market for complex, multi-button games, and the Wii allows for that too. But it also allows for NES style controls, motion controls, and pointer controls. That makes it the true sequel to the NES and the SNES, much more so than the 360 and the PS3.

  19. Anonymous:

Haha what a jackass this guy is. I’m not gonna waste much more of my breath replying to an article made of ass but I think I’d rather have the best of both, hardcore and casual with the Wii just like we have with the DS, which oh yes is outselling the PSP by god knows how much now.

All 360 and PS3 are, is a stupid bitch fight between M$ and Sony trying to outdo each other being the most “hardcore”, whilst Nintendo rolls around in their millions being made weekly.

    name something else…..
erm ok how bout resi 4, excite truck, mario strikers, mortal kombat, godfather, scarface, trauma centre, dragon ball z, heatseaker, sonic, pokemon.
as for upcoming titles you honestly think xbox’s lineup beats mario galaxy, resi UC, super smash bros brawl, metroid, mario kart, mySims, boogie, batalion wars 2, wii-fit, nitro bike, rayman raving rabbids 2, nights journey into dreams, no more heroes, donkey kong barrel blast, fire emblem……… and thats just the exclusives…….

You know, this has to be the worst blog on the net. but what more is there to be expected from red vs. blue fans. Halo legendary? amongst 1337 gamers probably, for the real gamers, not at all.

  25. shawn:

What’s this “legendary” status the author keeps referring to? I was under the impression that hindsight was necessary before something was deemed legendary. That legendary games were the ones that stood the test of time, that could be enjoyed by everyone, many times over, generation after generation.

Yeah. Nintendo definitely doesn’t fit the bill there.

That being said, this article reeks of nostalgia-driven bitterness. Cry, b*tch, moan. “The way things were.” I mean, that should go without saying, the industry is changing. Different people of different ages from all walks of life are starting to pick up and play video games, on multiple platforms and in different mediums. Nintendo (or any company) shouldn’t be faulted for wanting to focus some of their attention in that direction. After all, they are a business.

Man, it’s like you’re an only child and then you start to sulk and throw tantrums when the newborn arrives. And then you’re bitter and resentful of the fact that your parents don’t give you as much attention as they used to.

Get over it. Embrace it. I should think we would want to welcome more people into the fold, to see video games in a positive light instead of just hearing the fear-mongering headlines on their nightly news.

Miyamoto’s recent statements could very well be as a result of that. That the industry is changing and he’s thinking of ways to cater to everyone (after all, he’s not getting younger and with development cycles reaching well over 2 years now for games, I bet he’s conscious of getting the most bang for the buck sort of thing)

But I don’t think that even he believes that abandoning “hardcore” type games would be a very wise move– I mean, they released Twilight Princess to cater specifically to the North American audience who wanted that mature style of game, at the risk of it not doing too well in Japan (which it didn’t… or at least not as well).

Bottom line, Nintendo has very clever, very smart people working for them who know what they’re doing. They will do their best to appeal to all gamers. There will be casual games. There will be “hardcore” games. If Nintendo just doesn’t do it for you in the end, then move on– abandon ship if you want to. Or do what many of us have done and get multiple systems. Why does one company have to “win” or be “the best?” This kind of partisan, fanboyism annoys me to no end.

This is a very funny blog. If anything Nintendo went BACK to their roots by innovating and that’s why they are on pace of outselling the 360 next week worldwide while only being out for less than a year.

The kiddy system seems to be the 360 while most adult gamers such as myself seem to all own a Wii. Hell, we even play the Wii at company parties and our DS systems during break.

Nintendo knows what us adult gamers want who have been burned with boring crap in the last few gens. ;)

  28. pyros:

Ok you’re completely wrong in all senses of the word! (of which there is only one) quite honestly do take a look at the games of the SNES and NES days even the genesis (thats about about all the game consoles that i’ve gone up to :D ).

Ok the true predecessor to the SNES? its the Wii. Do you know why? Ever since the whole realm of 3D came out, all games have gone to the deep end of technological pursuit. There IS no demand of 2D wholesomeness anymore. I dont mean that SNES made 2D games and only 2D games, but the thing is you are talking about an whole new generation of games that were completely different to the SNES styled games of old.

FYI Xbox 360 and PS3 are not the true contenders at all, they arent contending with anything, they have a cliche market right now that the old school or “hardcore” gamers seem to associate with. But really is that really the right market? Seems to me that all the hard core old school gamers grew up. I know dozens of people that loved FF7 but probably cant stomach playing an RPG in its entirety anymore.

You sir are just reminiscing about something you most likely wished would be true, but would be true again. The old school days for you are over. Leave it to your kids or the generations beyond us to play the games of the SNES. We can’t handle it its not for us anymore.

But what IS for us? The current gen of games, the 360, the PS3, the Wii (oh yes definately the Wii). These are the consoles that are for our generations now. Have you played through any PS2 or Xbox 360 games of recent? I have, they’re pretty much dumbed down to the point of “give me my money back wheres my challenge?”

Here’s a nice example for you. I played God of War. Its spamtastic and full of button mashing goodness. You can WIN like that almost. Some parts require you to do blocking, Great, thats nice but recieve no damage, stay perma-safe behind that fancy block stance of yours? Good riddance. Same with a dozen of other games of that nature. Prince of Persia (newer versions), Ninja Gaiden (newer versions), Zelda (yes this game for the wii/cube was bLOODY easy with ridiculously easy battles).

If you ask me the days of old school are over cuz you know what most of us grew smarter. Most of us grew smarter, most of us dont have time, most of us need games that are good challenging difficult but at the same time when we are given something so awe inspiringly hard we give up. We toss it away. therein game devs learned to ease it up for us, give us more save points have us take less damage.

The greatest abuse of this reality is in FPS’. There was a time when FPS’ had strict HP systems. Hey I dont mind the new shield and regeneration system honestly but does this not make the game 100% easier for everyone? Yes it does, you know why? I remember a game of Halo I played. Totally surrounded beaten down by too many things. I took it slowly, sat back let myself regen, do some more dmg kill off a few things, let myself regen. It was completely dumb but it worked.

So there you have it, All games are now dumbed down for us. appreciate it. I beat halo, had my fun with it. Easy as hell. I always play all FPS’ starting on the hardest mode available. God of War? Heavenly sword? I suspect jsut as much difficulty in those games as well. hit X X X X X X X X X X all enemies dead good. Move to boss battle X X X X oh shit Guard for 2 seocnds X X guard XX guard XX oh right I forgot sometimes you gotta hit some triggered moves for a fancy cutscene where you deal 100x the dmg. But thats how all games are now these days. And forgive the developers. Us gamers have been whining from the dawn of time after the SNES and NES days “make our games easier blah blab blah” and YOU are no different. ESPECIALLY if you are defending the 360 and the PS3 as the predecessors to the SNES and NES.

Take a good look at the games coming out ok? When you find me a great platformer or beat em up that rivals the difficulty of spiderman: maximum carnage or contra (i wont mention #3 cuz i havent played that) or TMNT (for the NES) or any variety of those games then ok! good job you’ve found a worthy predecessor to the SNES games of old.

Quite frankly tho, you probably wont get the chance to find one. If you did, Im sure it’d be stocked with save points everywhere. Cuz thats us gamers nowadays. Theres no ploying through super mario bros continually to beat the game and memorizing the patterns. We dont got the time, im sure younger kids do, by all means! Sadly they will never know the true glory of running through a SMB3 level rushing through everything and getting all the secrets with blazing fast efficencies. No, I sorta see them as grinding… grinding… (not sexually of course :D ) in the latest RPG ACTION FPS mockup lvling their stats and shooting people with quicksaves and everything to boot.

Ok, in response to whoever commented on a “hardcore gamer” not wanting the best graphics. What, exactly, is your definition of a hardcore gamer? I know this is slightly off the topic of consoles, but some of the most respected games of all time, still played as well, mind you, are not respected because of their stunning graphics. Take into consideration Starcraft and Diablo 2, two very popular games, even today, still enjoyed by many. Also take into consideration that the graphics are terrible, but in amazement, they are still fun. Can you believe that? Graphics aren’t everything. Sure, they make the overall experience more enjoyable, but I’d much rather play diablo 2 for a long period of time then play halo 2. I owned all the last generation consoles, and I own a Wii so far this generation, and I can safely say that whenever I play through one game on my wii, I always know I can come back and have a blast with starcraft, diablo, and counter-strike source. Those are fun games. CSS is played by hard core gamers, but the graphics are less than stellar these days.

    Thankyou for reading =)

    Have a nice day.

Anyone who knows the real history, and the real impetus behind Nintendo’s actions of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s will have a different conclusion, I’ll find.

Nintnendo isn’t abandoning ANYTHING, they’re merely illustrating how gamers today have lost the way. It’s quite telling when my Mom and Dad were avid players of the NES, from Zelda to Lolo to Dr. Mario, but I can’t get them on a modern gaming system.

The Playstation 3 and XBox 360 have left behind the first true REAL GAMERS I’ve ever known. Nintendo, ironically, is the only one who seems to pay attention to the players who got them first started.

You know, when I first played Wii sports I thought, ‘Wow, this game is easy. All you have to do is swing with a gentle stroke or punch even a smidge and you’ll win. Then I got higher in the ranks and found myself beaten to a pulp in the first 10 seconds of a round. That was redicules.

I found myself asking, ‘did I lose my mojo or did the opponent get better? I was intrigued at how this game just got harder. Not only did I want to beat this guy, but I wanted to beat the guy on the next round and next round. I’m hooked as I play every day just to get to the next one.

A few days later, my friends come in and see me play. They saw my ranks and thought it was a hard game(they aren’t gamers). I told them, just play it from the start and you’ll get up to it. They did and they saw how easy it was. After a few more days, they were at the guy who I had so much trouble beating realized this was a hard game. For them, they weren’t able dodge or punch the computer. After I showed them how it was done(the manly way), they were sure this game was for the Core gamer. It was both casual and hard. At least that was my take of the game.

I guess it’s not a hard game until you’re beaten hard by someone who is a master at it. I mean, go to youtube and find the guy that cracked the whole wall on Wii Tennis. That’s something I just can’t imagine even doing.

The funny thing is, that I’ve always seen Nintendo, straight through its N64 & Gamecube consoles as the more “hardcore” gamesmaker. Most PS2 owners I know have rarely played anything other than the latest FIFA, Pro Evo Soccer, or Grand Theft Auto (cos its got ganstas yo!). Having said that, the PS2’s huge market share meant that even if a small minorty bought quality, “hardcore” games, its could still represent a huge number of sales.

Most Gamecube owners I know were really into games and would buy all the AAA Nintendo titles available for it. I know someone who bought a Gamecube with Windwaker & Metroid Prime, and sold it to buy a PS2 so he could play FIFA and Call of Duty (which, incidently, you could buy for the gamecube too!). He thought Windwaker and Metroid were too “confusing.” I don’t know if its relevant though, but judging from the way games are reported and consoles sold, etc, it seems that Europe, N America and Japan, each have significantly different attitudes to gaming, with Europe definitely being a Sony loving, FIFA guzzling, lets play the first few tracks of Gran Turismo cos its got shiny cars sort of market.

Playstation fans are pissed because their precious console isn’t racing ahead like the last two have, and Xbots are crying because their lead they’ve had and been so proud of having for a year is being stamped on by Nintendo in just a few months.

So f-ing what if Nintendo are trying to attract new people into games aswell as having games for the old “hardcore” fans, it’s a hell of a lot better than what Microsoft is doing, “Zomg let’s rlease r console a yr ahead and we cn beat Sony LOLZ!11 we r da most hardcore and ppl will see dat, hoo givs a fk if r consoles break down we hv endless suppliz of moniez LOL”

Yeah, M$ stick to making POS Operating Systems, you might suck at them but it’s all you can do, and Sony, well they aren’t too bad so whatever.

People who bitch at having more casual gamers are shallow little pricks who can’t see beneath good graphics and a gun on the screen. YOU AREN’T THE ONLY PEOPLE IN GAMING SO STOP BITCHING.

Don’t ever say XBOX is a legacy of the SNES. The SNES is an awesome console, the XBOX simply… is not!

“Regardless, Miyamoto states that we need need games that are more fun and less difficult to play, such as the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy. Miyamoto forgets that it’s exactly the opposite that made Nintendo so big.”

Maybe you and I see different things in his comment. You see that games should be easy to finish.

I see Nintendo’s roots in that statement. I see that games should not have complex control schemes that you cannot just pick up and play. I see exactly what Nintendo has always done with its games. Make them simple enough that anyone can pick up and play them, but a challenge to finish.

You use Mega Man as an example, and a good one at that. Mega Man has always been a simple game. Back on the NES, it was shoot, later you could charge, slide, jump, and walk. Other than that, all you had to do was change your powers. It’s not any more complex now, either, with only a few changes, like dash in place of slide.

Why does Mega Man last? Because it is the epitome of what Miyamoto is saying games should be. It’s a game that is very simple to pick up and play. It’s not easy to beat the game, but anyone can pick it up and play.

That is the roots of Nintendo, and that is the vision for the future.

Halo is legendary? I played Halo. It was a very cute game. I thought it would be great for people who had not played a FPS before. Something to cut your teeth on before moving up to solid food.

Ha What is funny is the Wii is hardcore for the real hardcore players. You know the ones that came before the PS kiddies.

Also the controls of the next gen systems leave some thing out. The Wii addresses this left out feeling so much that other people became interested. Just look at Res evil Wii the remake on the Wii. It doesn’t get more hardcore than that! Why do I say this well people actually became better at the shooting side of the game. Really think about this.

I will admit the graphics of the next gen stuff is great yet this update is more of a half update even for the HD systems. The current HD systems are some where between the PC engine and a neo geo. Really cool yet no one wants to pay for them and then on top of that, have you notice nothing can make you go back and play an old game the way people played res evil on the wii. Put simply if there was no online then a lot of these games would be dead in the water no matter how good they look. To me that shows that the current trend is one of diminishing returns and every one was simply hoping that HD would put cool back into gaming. It did sort of but really I’ll leave pushing the graphics stuff up to the PCs and look at consoles for the real game experience.

Just look at the problems faced with the PS3 and then look at the games people want on the xbox 360. Some have old school titles yet none of them represent gaming and they don’t even borrow from them game play wise. If you don’t believe me then boot of your VC on the Wii and take a look for your self.

Super Ghosts ‘n Goblins! No one even knows how good the graphics are in this game because no one has ever made it to the 3 stage or maybe even the 2nd for that matter. The hardcore loved it! Who else did?

The main problem is gaming was not continuous. The things that made one gen so great are forgotten due to people dropping out of gaming or either a flood of new comers. This happens every gen. Why is this one different. Also too it not so much nintendo forgetting it’s roots it the industry trying to make money off new gen people with HD graphics.

I’m sorry but what made the nes and snes big was the plumber and the sports games. Contra was fun but I don’t know anyone that did not beat it by going with the cheat. As a matter of fact almost all the games had a cheat to make them easy.

What made those first systems succesful was group play with sports and spectators watching and or taking turns on games. The PS3 and 350 are loner systems with bands of geeks and racist online spouting BS. The Wii brought gaming back home. The nintendo Wii is bringing back the people that it left behind chasing Sony. It’s the reason my wife has picked up a contoller for the first time in 16 years.
