PS3 outsells Xbox 360 in July?

By Danny Mendez

PS3 outsells Xbox 360 in July? Before the release of the official NPD Group numbers, a Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst, Michael Pachter, predicts the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in July, but he doesn’t believe Sony’s luck will continue.

In his usual preview report, he predicts the following July US sell-through numbers:

450,000 DS units

330,000 Wiis

225,000 PSPs

205,000 PS2s

160,000 PS3s

115,000 Xbox 360s

85,000 GBA units

As you can see, Nintendo leads the charts, like usual, but the Xbox 360 falls behind the Playstation 3 and not just by a few thousand units either. If the prediction is correct, this would be the first time in the next-gen console history book that the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360. But Pachter doesn’t believe Sony’s good fortune will continue:

“We have forecast a month-over-month decline for Xbox 360 hardware sales, due to the warranty issue announced in early July. We believe that the announcement may have disrupted sales for a week or so, as consumers struggled with the meaning of the ‘three red rings of death’ issue. Now that the warranty has been communicated to consumers, the price has been cut, and (it appears) the design flaw that caused the high failure rate has been corrected, we believe sales will rebound.”

With the impending release of Halo 3, Bioshock’s release next week, the new HDMI equipped 360s, and the price cut, there’s no way the sales number will say down.

On the other hand Sony will soon have some games worth playing with Lair, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and Ratchet & Clank so it’s likely their sales will also increase.

BTW I love how people think Microsoft are whooping Sonys ass when Sony sold more than 3 times as many home consoles in the US last month. (365,000 - 115,000)

David I should hope so with a price drop, and your cheering for one month thats funny.

It’s only because of the tremendous price drop that the PS3 received. This is what everyone has been waiting for. But Microsoft rebounded with the same price drop IN CANADA. That’s right US, we also are part of the world.

Actually, PS3 selling better than Xbox 360 has more to do with that console losing steam after almost 2 years in the market (it came out in late 2005, not 2006 like some seem to believe). It is simply not selling as it use to sell.

That and the PS3’s price cut has helped Sony briefly take the #2 spot in sales. Lets see if the PS3 can hold those numbers after the cheaper version sells out and you can only buy the expensive version.

PS3 still has a long way to go before it can sell enough units like the Xbox 360 or Wii, though.

Slow your roll Xbox360 fans PS2 has always outsold the 360. and why do you think microsoft added hdmi because all new tvs will soon be hd. Because they know if they didn’t they would end up being an also ran. once the developers figure out ps3 watch out all other players because the ps3 isn’t a game console it’s a home media center. It not only plays blu-ray but it up converts regular dvd’s it networks with your pc and will show most content like mp3’s, downloaded movies, pic’s, plus it’s rumored that with one of the next software updates that it will have dvr capabilities, all of the things microsoft wants to sell you with their windows home media edition which is why they didn’t give all of those capabilities to the xbox 360 so they could charge you seprately and make more money. That’s why the ps2 is still kicking but because it has the biggest library of all the consoles and it’s the cheapest yes as I am sure someone will point out there’s no halo but who cares how many first person shooters are available? too many.
