ps3's Folding@home gets an upgrade Support for Remote Play, a reduced power screensaver mode and enhanced visuals are some of the new features added in today’s Folding@home upgrade for the PS3.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and related diseases. Because the process of folding proteins is so complex, groups of computers are used to perform simulations to study the process.

User participation by the PS3 community continues to be very strong. In the last five months more than 536,000 PS3 users worldwide have started helping Stanford crunch data. Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA said “It is one thing for us to provide the technology to make this possible; it is quite another to have gamers from all over the world proactively sign up for this program to make a difference in our global community. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results we have seen to date in this collaborative effort.”

Features in the new upgrade are:

  • Support for Remote Play for PSP
  • More Support for Additional Protein Simulations
  • Screensaver Mode: allows PS3 users to consume slightly less power
  • Link to Project Description: allows users to quickly obtain additional information about the project they are currently compling.
  • Protein Visualization Enhancements
  • Advanced Participation Mode

Current PS3 Folding@home users can download the updated version of the application by simply restarting it on your PS3. New Folding@home users can join the program by simply clicking on the Folding@home icon within the Network menu, and following the on-screen steps.

It continues to astonish me how much effort and emphasis Sony keeps placing on functions other than gaming on their GAMING console.

Uh, hi. Memo to Sony? Forget trying to turn your console into a better DVD player, PVR or a super computer for the world’s research projects.

Keep your focus on the core purpose of the PS3: playing games. Then maybe, just maybe, your badly trailing console and tarnished brand will have a hope at redeeming its reputation in the gaming industry.
