Everything is cooler Overseas: PS3 to get PVR add-on
US PS3 owners, don’t expect to see this add-on available in the US any time soon. In early 2008 PS3 owners in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain will be able to turn their machine into a TV tuner and personal video recorder (PVR) with Sony’s new PlayTV.
At its Press Conference at Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced its plans to release PlayTV for the PS3 in Europe. “The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family,” said David Reeves, head of Sony Europe.
PlayTV will utilize Europe’s Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) signals to turn the PS3 into a television receiver and personal video recorder. Similar to current PVRs on the market, it will be able to pause and rewind live TV, and will contain two TV tuners so you can watch one show while downloading another to your PS3’s hard drive.
To make it even cooler, Sony also announced PlayTV will come with seamless connectivity with a PSP. It will allow you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programs remotely on PSP via Remote Play. Or if you are on your way out the door, you can quickly transcode recorded TV shows, put them on a memory stick, and have them to watch on your PSP on the way to work.
No price has been announced, and Sony said that they are investigating a similar option for US users. I won’t hold my breath.

Great. Yet another feature other than good games on the world’s most overpriced game console.

Again.. another press release from Sony about a new feature turned into a way to bash Sony? Are all the writers here so utterly pointless Sony bashers? Get over it people.. its a machine.. report like you would report news.. not like you reports a fanboy hate mail column… this is plain crap.

Hey Grover, next time actually read the post before you go spouting off about sony bashers. I am a PS3 owner and fan, and I did report the accurate news in the article. I’m jealous the US ps3 will most likely NOT get this upgrade because of our bass-ackwards television delivery system, but I still love my PS3. Did you miss my Folding@home post?…that was informative and accurate too.
