Valve Software: Wii is more valuable than Xbox 360 or PS3
Valve Software founder and Half Life creator Gable Newell has decided that perhaps, perhaps his company should begin developing games for the Wii. The purpose would be to take advantage of its unique control system as opposed to the relatively standard controls on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
From one point of view it would be foolish not to develop games for the Wii as that could lead to more sales for Valve but by the same token is still limited by its graphics capabilities (yes, I’m still on that and I will always be on that).
Newell doesn’t think that is a problem saying to Game Informer, “I think it’s [the Wii] more valuable. I think it’s more interesting than just graphics chip – CPU combination. It’s the machine I have at home. The fact that we don’t have anything in development on it even though it represents big opportunities as a whole is an obvious hole in our strategy.”
You should know what I think by now, graphics matter as much as gameplay, ruin one or the other and you have a terrible game. Nintendo ruined the graphics part (yep, still on it).
He also said that the Xbox 360 is “pretty much” a PC and the PS3 is “kind of” a PC. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s the proper way to play a game with a Xbox 360 controller or keyboard and mouse. I don’t really care for the PS3 controller or Wiimote and even though the Xbox 360 controller is good my preference is still a keyboard and mouse.
The Wii may be a commercial success for Nintendo right now, seeing as how it still can’t make enough to meet demand but let’s see where the situation is in a year or two. Not that I’d ever reduce myself to playing a Wii since I never plan to buy one.
It might make sense for Valve to develop titles for the Wii but I’m hoping it doesn’t for the simple fact that much better things can be done in the graphics department for a PC (or Xbox 360 and oh… sure, I guess the PS3 too).

Didn’t I just say it’s about both, a game can have terrible gameplay but great graphics which makes a bad game. A game can have great gameplay but terrible graphics which is also a bad game. Great games have both, good games might have both and games on the Wii have gameplay but certainly not graphics. Ruining one or the other for me is just the same as making a bad game.

The Graphics debate as a reason to purchase a Wii PS3 or 360 is irrelevant to those that buy the majority of consoles parents. Of course for the 18-35 male demograph, more core gamer which the original Xbox proved pretty popular with it’ll of course be an issue. Having been gaming for years and seen numerous format battles I really don’t care anymore about graphics if a game is not enjoyable i’ll not play it. Graphics and Audio only enhance an central experience not define it.Sony might come third or a poor 2nd in this race but its their own fault.
Fundamentally the whole strategy behing the PS£ is flawed.A games console has to be affordable for parents because thats who buys the majority of them. Their not going to spend that type of money on a “toy”.They might spend it on a lab top, they might even get sky hd for the family and a second box for the kids.
The PS£ is therefore competing directly with Bill and the 360, only starting a year later. The male 18-35 demograph was the backbone of the original xbox. Becoming number one in this market is going to be tough but even if successful your talking only a fraction of the PS2 sales.
Is the PS£ as an entertainment hub not for me, in theory it is capable, but my streaming media music and download are handled by my pc. So its outrageously priced as a games console and its other features are not going to be used by the majority of potential customers.
And theres also lovely blu ray.Someone at sony must have thought, “Forget HD DVD lets flog our own next gen HD optical format on the back of our most successful brand.” Instead of being laughed out of Sony HQ and sent for immediate therapy, the PS3 is also blu ray player. Its the law of dimishing returns as regards optical media. HD DVD and Blu RAy while not dead on arrival will be virtually obselete in five years digital media is the king. Mp3 v CD hello Sony? HD DVD and BLU RAY may well exist for a long time like Vinyl but very much as niche products not the mass consumer format Sony needs.
Those Mad *******s at NIntendo went off their collective heads and designed a games console that didn’t cost a small fortune, knew what it was and is actually fun to play. Sony you did a Sega.

the whole idea of calling people graphics whores should be reserved for 360 fans not ps3 fans. people always compare the 360 and ps3 in terms of graphics and often the 360 has the edge as its programming system is more standard however the ps3’s capabilities lie more in complex game related calculations eg better AI or more acurate collision data.
my favourite games are metal gear solid and tomb raider (1, not the remake) i have a ps3 but raphics mean shit to me. i just want better gameplay (which is why i have hated every tomb raider after chronicles)
