Study: Wii will continue to outsell Xbox 360 and PS3

Study: Wii will continue to outsell Xbox 360 and PS3 A new study has shot to pieces the theory that the Wii’s limited grunt will stall its popularity. The study also reinforces how important it is for Sony to rectify the perception that there is a lack of good games for the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

Market research company BrandIntel analyzed information from more than 400,000 blog, forum, and social networking comments, and concluded that more mainstream gamers intend on buying the Wii than either the Xbox 360 or PS3.

“As the console war heats up again for the holiday season, Nintendo has been able to successfully target a new audience of casual gamers which has opened up new revenue opportunities for the company,” BrandIntel vice president Alan Dean told PC World.

The study reveled that the Wii was still generating a lot more positive consumer buzz than the PS3 and Xbox 360, although the Xbox 360 was well regarded because of its impressive games line up.

While the PS3 was widely viewed as a technically superior machine, it was “perceived more more negatively than the Wii and Xbox 360 due in part to its high cost and lack of attractive games”, according to Dean.

Last week it was revealed that cumulative global Wii sales had overtaken those of the Xbox 360 (which had the next-generation console market to itself for itself for a year).

GAMER.BLORGE.com’s own very scientific online study of 2320 gamers found that 36% of gamers think the Wii will win this round of the console war, while 28% think the PS3 will prevail. Only 22% believe the Xbox 360 will make a comeback.

Mind you, 2% of gamers think think their mum will win the console war, and another 1% think that Chuck Norris will (who the hell is Chuck Norris, anyway – just joking).

We’ve even had significant numbers of gamers vote for the Nintendo 64 (33), themselves (33), the PlayStation 2 (33), the PC (28), and the Vectrex (11) – now that was a cool console, but I don’t think it will the next-generation console war.

Yes, we did let gamers add options to the poll, which is why I guess we had two people voting for “Hulkamania and Nintendo and Apple” and 10 people voting for poop. Whatever.

Anyway, it’s clear that the Wii’s popularity won’t fade anytime soon. Not good news for gamers who like games with grunt.

The irony is of course, the Wii has the least good games, and the worst online experience of all the current consoles, yet sell the most? Proof that consumers are stupid.

The PS3 will shine, the games are now arriving, and proving to do stuff not seen before on any existing platform, many games other systems are not even capable of.

The only blip, was the Lair release, which seems to have been rushed out, despite controller issues. Warhawk shows how SixAxis can be used to great effect, giving accurate, reliable title motion sensing.

    There is no irony.

The Wii sells because in the end, videogames are all about FUN and the Wii delivers that 100% of the time.

Fact is, the people who brand themselves as “hardcore” are mostly 400 pound nerds accumulating lard in their mother’s basement. They don’t represent gamers. Because true gamers don’t play M rated games to make up for their lack of manhood nor do they sell their mother to spend a small fortune on consoles, games, HDTV’s and all that crap that in their mind makes them “hardcore” gamers.

True gamers look only for one thing…FUN.

You can find fun games on the PS3 and more so on the Xbox 360… but most of the fun games are on the Wii.

Another reason why the Wii sells so much it’s because it’s a console that is fun to have if you have lots of friends. It’s the perfect party machine. I understand that for most nerds who don’t have friends, the whole concept of what the Wii offers is quite alien. Too bad :)

Almost a full year and the Wii still on top! cool!

Wow…I agree that the Wii is a great console…but there really haven’t been that many “fun” games…no more so than on any other console…this coming from a “hardcore” gamer who owns his own house and has a girlfriend even… Laura seemed to take the South Park episode “Make love, not Warcraft” a little too seriously, because most gamers are not living in their mom’s basement…seriously…how old of a stereotype is that now that gaming has become bigger than movies? Laura obviously has some issues with “gamers” and needed to take a shot at them. Hope she feels better.

Oh, and I like M rated games and have a pretty nice “manhood” and happen to like my PS3 and HDTV ever bit as much as my Wii…Anything else you want to be wrong about? Not that I care really…

ruddiger hit it spot on. Seriously Laura….I think you are which you belittle.

  8. Jak Morris:

Good for the wii, i could care less, as long as i play what i want. i might buy the Wii someday, although i might not, no games attract me. Was never really a nintendo kid.

  9. wuehne:

I own a Wii *gosh*. I will buy a PS3 sometime, if the games that i like arrive finally. The “console war” is fictive. A battle between childs who arent capable (financially) to buy what they want. So they tend to stuck with the (one) console they own. They defend it. Tear every other to pieces. So dont talk about a “console war”. See it this way: Do you think it would be better if only ONE console exists?

  10. wynot:

Anyone who is reading this is most likely really into gaming so all of these responses are probably from the “hardcore” that Laura is describing, including myself (minus about 200 lbs).

The reason the Wii is so popular and continues to outsell is not because of graphics or M rated titles or whatever you relate to quality games. Its because it is fun to play and it appeals to everyone. My Mom likes it, even my grandfather liked it before he passed on. To me thats a monumental feat that hasn’t been seen since the early 80s when everyone in this country loved video games. Miyamoto is quoted as saying he wants to return gaming to the level it was at in the 80s, I think he may succeed.

So the voice of the millions of serious gamers is still important, but its getting dwarfed by the hundreds of millions of folks who just think the Wii is kinda cool and couldn’t care less what Manhunts rating is going to be.
