Group Review: Halo 3
By Danny Mendez
It’s hitting stores tonight. The long awaited Halo 3 will finish the FPS series once and for all, and we’ve compiled a group review of some of the first Halo 3 reviews.
1up.com: "Co-op play starts off as another known quantity, but turn on a new feature called campaign scoring, and all of a sudden, the main story-driven game becomes an arcade-like experience. Campaign scoring lets players work together and pool points from kills (with bonuses for headshots, grenade sticks, etc.), or they can compete by going for individual high scores.
Sure, no one aspect of the game is life-changing on its own, but perhaps the package as a whole is. After all, Halo 3 has enough content to keep you stuck to your controller for weeks, if not months or even years."
Score: 10/10
ArsTechnica: "The bulk of the game does take place on foot, but there’s a variety of vehicle levels to break up the corridor-laden action effectively. The game’s sole flying sequence, in particular, was very enjoyable, and made me pine for a dog-fighting option in the multiplayer similar to that seen in Warhawk.
The linear nature of the vehicle levels does reveal one disappointing element of the game. Even the larger outdoor environments are confined, and upon closer inspection, you’ll realize that despite the series’ progress, the environments just don’t feel as immense as they are made out to be."
Score: 7/10
PALGN: "As mentioned, the single player literally kicks off where Halo 2 left things. Master Chief and the Arbiter finally get acquainted and the two are off to cause a whole lot of havoc. The first thing that you’ll notice is that the environments have been spruced up really well. Through out the game’s nine missions, there is a much greater variety among the levels than has been seen in the previous games.
As most will have probably read by now, Forge is the mode that has the potential to ‘make’ Halo 3. In short, Forge does make Halo 3. Essentially, Forge is a map editor. You may think, well so what? Map editors have been done before. Yes, but Forge can edit on the go and literally in the middle of a game."
Score: 9/10
While the reviewers tend to love the game and believe it has improved upon the previous versions, each reviewer has its own little gripe here or there with Halo 3. We’ve only provided a basic summary for you and we tried to mention the more talked-about aspects of the game, but, for more analysis, please make sure to check out their lengthy, in-depth reviews.
Although, if you’re a Halo fan, I doubt any review will prevent you from buying the game.
