Wii is the stupid cousin of consoles that developers don’t want

We all know the Wii isn’t the most powerful console on the block, its graphics lag behind the others, it doesn’t have bump-mapping, high dynamic range lighting or have high resolution textures, it doesn’t have much RAM and it is limited to 480p standard definition video output. The Wii, as one site puts it is “the stupid cousin of consoles” that developers don’t want.
I know, we’ve been there before, I’ve said this many times in the past, every site has and the argument is still valid. Considering those things, one has to wonder if developers really care about the Wii. If a post over at WiiFanboys is any indication, they don’t and are wishing the Wii never existed as is every PS3 and Xbox 360 owner on the planet because it is impossible for us to understand the attraction to the Wii.
The author, going by the alias, Splosion, points out that games should not be ported over to the Wii since some of the ports come from the more capable consoles, namely the Xbox 360 or PS3, the games don’t look as good and don’t play nice with the WiiMote since those titles were not designed for that interface and developers don’t want to take the time to make the games better on the lesser console.
He goes on to say that games for the Wii should be exclusively designed for the Wii and not ported to other systems because the reverse situation would apply. The games would not look good on the other consoles nor would the controls work out so great, maybe not, maybe the Xbox 360 and PS3 developers could work miracles with Wii titles on their respective systems, I don’t really know.
Right now, game wise and even technology wise, the Wii is little more than a GameCube plus though it does have games that might be worth checking out like Resident Evil 4 (also available for PC), Metroid Prime Corruption and Twilight Princess. Three games, that’s it but the same could be said for the PS3 except for the fact that I would rather have a PS3 than pay a premium for the Wii which would equate to buying a PS3.
WiiMote integration isn’t very tight with existing titles and with everything else, you may as well go buy a PS3 since you could end up spending as much on a Wii anyway.

RE4 is not on the pc, altghough it is on the ps2 and game cube, the original wii games that they worked on for the wii are very innovative such as Zelda twlight princess, and metroid prime 3, and the wii can support up 480p and 576i, and although that is not 1080p it is still better than a game cube, your comments about the if you buy retail then you dont have to worry about the price tag, anyway you shouldn’t be such a jerk the ps3 may have graphics but outside of that it is a pretty uninnovative console, and it has less good games then the wii or 360.

I won’t deny that many of the wii games have been dissapointing, but I’m confused on how you could possibly spend as much on a wii as a ps3. The wii costs $250 and comes packed with a game while the PS3 is currently $500 and contains no game. both only include one remote. an extra wiimote plus nunchuck will cost you $60 and sixaxis will cost $40. The average ps3 game is about $60, average wii game is $50. We’ll assume you’d buy another game besides wii sports, and assume you’d only buy 1 ps3 game. So if you bought all of these things, wii is running you $360 while the ps3 is $600. that’s a difference of $240 which is not small fries to the average joe.

You are a dushbag sony fanboy. The PS3 doesn’t have very many good games on it, more then half of its top twenty games are just sports games. And I don’t know why you would say that XBox360 fans can’t understand the allure of the Wii, there are plenty of people who own the the XBox360 and the Wii and just in caes u haven’t noticed the PS3 is getting its ass handed to it by both nintendo and Microsoft because there are no good games for the PS3 because developers aren’t making any.

Re4 on pc doesn’t have mouse support, you have to aim using the WASD keys, I’m not kidding, who could play like that? Almost every site agrees that RE4 on the wii is the best version, with the PC being the worst. And there are more games that are worth checking out, maybe not more AAA titles, but definitely games that if they were on PS3 you’d say give it a rent, you might like it.

I dont have a wii but i love the new direction nintendo are moving in, they seem to be the only ones who realise the usual xbox\sony control can only go so far. While the other next gen consoles are more powerful we still interact with them in exactly the same way we did a decade ago, a new system of control was long overdue. i say hooray for nintendo, they have always been the intuitive risk takers of the gaming world, the wii might not be my first choice for this generation but they are single handedly paving the way to a better controller of tommorrow.

I own all three systems and I have to say, right now, all of them are collecting dust on the shelves, with the PS3 having the thickest layer of dust.
I found myself spending most of my free time on my DS and PS2 as there are many many great games to be played on those two. I’m a fan of jRPG.
The Xbox360 is getting a nice line up of RPG from developer like Mistwalker, games like Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata got me totally hooked, I also enjoy playing through Bioshock, GoW, etc.
On the Wii, well.. the wii doesn’t really collect dust as my mum plays on it almost everyday. there’re still not a lot of good RPG on the Wii right now other than the Twilight Princess which I’ve finished long ago. Opoona is looking interesting and I can’t wait to get my hands on No More Heroes. There are many good games on the Wii, more on the casual side, like Trauma Center, Wii Sports, etc. Sports game are great, Tiger woods PGA tour 07 and 087 on the Wii is really the first EA sports game I really enjoy playing. Solid games like Super Paper Mario is also great.
The PS3, however, still has absolutely nothing for me to play yet, but that’s just me though. The future, however, doesn’t look so bad. Being technologically superior than the competitors the PS3 might have a good future in a couple of years. but right now, I might as well pack it up in a box and sell it in a second hand market, then buying it again when my kind of games come out.
but, seriously, 80% of my play time (in a month) still go to the PS2, and that’s not going to change soon, with the line up of “must-plays” I’ve got. (I have to work too, so I don’t get to play all that much) Like Persona3, Xenosaga3, WildARMS 5, etc. it’ll probably take me more than half a year to finish them all, then I’ll probably be grinding on my 360’s rpgs, and by then something great for the Wii would have come out (it takes almost 2 years to get things right on the DS.), so, yeah, it’s a hard decision, as the PS3 is so freakishly beautiful, and the Wii graphics only looks a little better than GC’s graphics. (that’s why I baught all three, so I don’t have to make up my mind.) I guess it depends on what will you be playing. look for the games you really wanted to play and just buy the machine for the game, I think it’s easier that way, and if there are no games you want to play on those two console yet, then wait. Games is about games and not about the console, really, because you will be playing the game, not the console, so I think it’s best if you make your decision based on the games you really wanted to play.

Correction, all those games you listed have “amazing” graphics, for the Wii. Let’s take a look at Call of Duty on the Wii and compare it to the Xbox 360, now which looks better? Call of Duty looks downright awful on the Wii, awful I say!

Can you really tell that much of a difference between 30fps and 60fps, if you can, if you have a much better perception of reality than I do, so to speak.

I don’t play my PS2 any more, mainly because of the graphics… contrary to what some people here might think, I do not own a PS3, I simply said it is more powerful than the Wii, it is… and I would buy it over the Wii…
I’m primarily a PC and Xbox 360 gamer and that’s not going to change any time soon.
Just because Nintendo has developers on their side does not mean a majority of the games will be good and the Wii has a few good games but not many, just like the PS3.

OMG..You’re still allowed to post blogs on Games/Systems on this website despite your complete disregard for the facts ? Wow. I don’t know how simple you want me to put this but, the Wii is doing what the DS has done to Portable Gaming.
The difference between the PS3 and the Wii ? The Wii is doing what Sony wish the PS3 could do. Selling without a decent array of games. This isn’t a good thing because it can’t last forever, but it shows that Nintendo have brought something completely different to the table.
For your sake, I really think you should understand the appeal of the Wii. It’s the iPod of Video Console’s. Imagine what the successor will be like. So, why should you understand the appeal of the Wii ? Wii 2 will be HD and PS4/Xbox3 (Xbox720?) will be Motion Sensor/IR/Speaker/Mic Enabled. Why ? Because they copy Nintendo as they themselves and other manufacturers have done since the NES. I think you should be far more appreciative of what Nintendo has contributed to the industry you proclaim to know so much about.

I’m currently playing PS2 Persona 3 (Shin Megami Tensei RPG), God Hand (Beat Em Up by Capcom ala Final Fight) & Rogue Galaxy (RPG from Level5).
Also playing on my PSP Jean D’Arc, Metal Gear Portable Ops & Daxter.
Waiting for PS3 price cut to play GTurismo 5, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 and Metal Gear Solid 4.
Games interesting me that I want to play much is White Knight Story, Folklore Folksoul and Little Big Planet. Definately must buy for me, but I want to finish those above first.

Oh, I’m not overly crazy about FPS but I do play a lot PC games too that is Counter Strike Source. I enjoy that game much with my friends. I hear Killzone 2 graphics for FPS will blow away a lot of competition. I like realistic guns protrayal and not those laser shooting like Halo, Doom, Sam etc type of games. I HATE THOSE. Dunno why, so I see Killzone 2 guns are more realistic and nice graphic maybe worth considering also for my PS3 games collection.

I own a ps3 and a 360. And warhawk is one of the best games i have played in years. I dont own a wii (yet). I do wish the wii had dvd play back and the graphics Were a bit better. I wonder how much cpu processing is being taken up by processing the motion control ect.. Because the graphics do seem a bit poor. I understand that the wii has revolutionized gaming. Maybe the wii2 will be better graphics as although i own a ps3 & 360 i have a dislike for both m$ and sony with there rootkits ect..

It’s no secret that the author is a graphics whore. You put anything on the screen that’s shiny and pretty, and he’s on the couch touching himself. He’s probably touch himself if he played Lair. He doesn’t see he attraction with the wii because for one thing, the name reminds him of his own sick habits. Another, is that he isn’t able to touch himself while jumping around with the wiimote.

i’ve been hearing that Wii can do bump mapping and HDR. do you have any proof (either a comment from a developer or straight from Nintendo) that says otherwise?
yes it doesnt have much RAM but then again it doesnt need that much in the first place because it doesnt need to process a ridiculous amount of data. i’d say it has enough RAM.
developers actually do care about supporting Wii. why? because at this stage in the generation cycle, supporting Wii is more likely to have a better return even with low sales. developers and publishers dont like the fact that their 360/PS3 games may need to sell twice as much to get the same returns as last gen. the industry is looking to Wii as a fundraiser for their 360/PS3 projects. at the very least you should be happy Wii is around for that.
other developers like that fact that they finally have a platform to do something completely different. not many of these can be seen as of yet because many developers were late to support Wii (and some are kicking themselves for it)

halo 3 took 2 years, most of the other games that held people over til then took a little while too.

Nintendo just happens to be one of those old names that are still going. you have a final fantasy game? yea uh huh, for what system? Sony still has its strings and for anyone they don’t have they try to destroy (spiderman 3). Microsoft just got into it and established halo and im sure all halo titles lived up to that name. you see nintendo games you see metroid or a lesser extend mario party you see EA you see madden or a lesser extend Boogie or that other game “playground” i think.
hell smash bros. melee still sells and plays better than that. (FIU, FSU & MDC campuses). so whats so great about a wii? the name…its been established as great and if it could boast a good multiplayer or revive wounded series (powerstone and phantasy star online I and II- not universe (IV) )
besides if you truly think about it, the wii mote and the nunchuck has two analogous and one d-pad between them, and STILL allows you to use all of them at the same time. did that just blow your mind? so far it has not been implicated, im not sure about mario soccer, but it could very well make for a balanced non frustrating sonic game.

Honestly, Jonathan, how did you ever survive the 8-bit era? I cannot believe you just stated that you do not play PS2 anymore because the graphics are so bad. That is proof right there that you do not understand the gaming world, and you really ought to stop posting about any game console. I still play SNES games. Am I severely handicapped because ZOMG I like a game with 10 year old graphics? Honestly, what is with you and graphics? I have seen the PS3 graphics. Yes, they are beautiful! Yes, when I play Wii, I can see some pixelation due to its low resolution! Are you happy? If I want to see gorgeous graphics, I will go watch a movie.
Speaking of movies, I still will never understand why you feel Wii is somehow a lesser console because it lacks a DVD player. Well, I think the XBox 360 sucks because it doesn’t have a coffee maker. WHO BUYS GAME CONSOLES TO WATCH MOVIES? Last I checked, people bought game consoles to PLAY GAMES. If my TV is occupied by someone watching a movie, I want to be able to unhook my Wii, go into the other room, and play it there without disturbing the movie group. You, on the other hand, have to wait for the 2 hour movie to complete before playing any games.

The author is a known XBox 360 fan and a graphics whore. He never has anything positive to say about the Wii.
I have one suggestion, instead of writing vitrile about the Wii, focus your energy on praising the XBox 360 and all of it’s wonderful games. Life will be a lot better and you’ll probably feel better too.

Attraction of the Wii is that its fun, casual and innovative. I bought it to play games with mates and when I want a fun fix quick.
When GTA IV comes out for PS3 then I’ll be willing to fork out the extra cash. as it is, a Wii costs $390 Aussie dollars with a game, and the PS3 is $1000.
In the end though, don’t bag the Wii till you’ve seriously played it with a bunch of friends… killer times

Wii has TWO good games, Zelda and Metroid…they released 9 months appart, what does that tell you? Can you say GameCube 1.5? The same problems are present. PS3 has MOtorstorm, Resistance, Ninja Gaiden, Warhawk and Heavenly Sword as great games. hmmm that’s 6 games compared to 2, and I mean real GAMES not crappy little 5 minute exercises waving your arms like an idiot. Nintendork fanboys are beginning to agree there are no real good games coming to Wii anytime soon. Ratchet and Clank, Haze, UT3 and Uncharted are all coming for the PS3 in the next few weeks.

Man, Jonathan, did it ever occur to you that 90% of the comments ripping you to shreds actually says something? This is not religion. Nothing good will come of you “defying the odds” and “speaking out against the masses”. You need to just accept that you are wrong and that you clearly do not understand what makes the Wii so fun for people. Nintendo’s graphics suck, but they are doing SOMETHING right if sales are as good as they are.
As for people who claim their Wii is collecting dust, I am OK with the current rate of game releases because I am super busy with school and work. Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be my reward for surviving this semester. If you think games are coming out too slowly then perhaps it is time to find another hobby.

The Wii is here to stay, it has opened up a whole new market for gaming. Parents and grandparents are not only buying the Wii they are playing it.
The third party developers that realize that the new market has more disposibale income that the teen and 20 somethings that are the traditional marler will make money.
Who would you rather sell to someone who has money of some one who will have to ask a parent for money.
The wii is truly a revelotion in gaming. Only when Microsoft and Sony wake up will they share in this new market.
Finally parents see nintendo as safe and will buy it when there are younger gamers in a household.
Sony gaming as been about family and as ling as they stick to that they will be alright.

Look at the DS, people thought it was weird and that it wasn’t going to be popular handheld and now today it has outsold the PSP more than 2 to 1 overall and continues to sell everyday. And what is amazing is that the top selling game is NINTENDOGS!!!!!!!!!!! For crying out loud thats a virtual dog game! That shows that Nintendo is smart in sacraficing graphics for innovation. The DS graphics may not be up to par with the PSP but why is the DS selling better. Thats pretty much going to be the same situation with the Wii, for the time being.

I would say that the allure of the wii is getting off your but and moving. Sure I like pushing a stick and pressing buttons like any gamer, but to be able to acctualy swing my controller like a golf club rather than flick a stick is way cool. I mostly play golf on the Wii, also I like the racing games like excite truck where you stere by holding the remote like a steering wheel. It’s more emersive. I wish some 360 games have the wii controler. Granted there are flaws in the motion sensors but it’s still way cool. Maybe I’m just to geek chic.
