The annual Golden Joystick awards were held at the Hilton Hotel in London, celebrating it’s 25th year of highlighting the best games in the business. The big winner was Gears Of War on the Xbox 360, which won four awards, including the coveted Ultimate Game Of The Year.

Jason Booth, a former employee at Harmonix, makers of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises, has roundly laid in to both Sony and the PS3 on his personal blog. He reveals that the PS3 is much harder to develop for than the Xbox 360, and the he thinks Sony will lose this round of the console war quite spectacularly.

Will Wright, the main man behind The Sims and a host of other massively popular games on a range of platforms has claimed that the Wii is the only true next generation console. The controversial opinion came during an interview in which he also discussed the effects games have on kids, games being used for educating people, and future release Spore.

Sony have announced their latest quarterly profit figures, and the company as a whole has seen a huge increase. Unfortunately the games division, responsible for the PS3, PS2 and PSP lost a huge amount of money, thus ending the old trend for the Playstation bailing the other divisions out of financial trouble.

On Tuesday night, BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) held their annual booze up, otherwise known as an awards ceremony for the games industry. In the best tradition of awards ceremony hosts I’ll announce: And the winner is… The Wii.

You are probably as surprised as I am how successful the Wii has been for Nintendo, selling 9.3 million consoles worldwide. But shock at this success story wasn’t just limited to us mere mortals, as games developers have now also admitted to being caught off guard by the unexpected boom.
