Sony launches new PS3 marketing campaign online

October 7, 2007

Playstation 3 StandingSony is preparing to launch their new PS3 marketing campaign on the world, but the question is does anyone care? Kim Nguyen, the marketing manager for the Playstation 3 announced the change of direction on the official Playstation blog a few days ago.

Up until this point the advertising for Sony’s overpowered yet under-performing console has been drab to say the least, and a long way behind Microsoft’s for the Xbox 360 and (to a lesser extent) Nintendo’s for the Wii. So in the run up to Christmas, which is always a key battleground in the console sales war, Sony are pushing the envelope and introducing a new range of adverts designed to entice consumers who have yet to show their hand.

An online campaign is coming first, with a number of computer animations which cleverly shows the PS3 morphing in to various items and icons from forthcoming PS3 games all “in a black onyx world”. It looks quite good but it wouldn’t make me rush out and buy a PS3, especially at the current high price.

Although the campaign is currently limited to online outlets, it’s expected to be followed through to television, where it may make more of an impact. There’s no doubt that both the Xbox 360 and Wii are being advertised more efficiently at the moment, exciting people about the console and also the brand which surrounds it. Sony need to try and claw back some ground in this field, which always used to be one of their strengths in the days of PS1 and PS2.

Here’s a link to the first of the online adverts, which includes the Blu-ray banner. Check it out and then let us know if you think this will make the slightest difference to PS3 sales this holiday season.
