Sony denies warranty service on surge-protected PS3
Just when you thought it wasn’t possible for customer service to get any worse, Sony has denied one person warranty service on his PS3 because it was plugged in to a surge protector.
Maxconsole reports the four month old PS3 got to a point where it would just shut off but unplugging and plugging it back in brought the ailing unit back to life.
One day, that did not work and all the coaxing in the world would not bring this particular PS3 back from the silicon graveyard.
Nothing was left to do except call Sony where the rep asked a bunch of standard questions but after he found out the PS3 was plugged in to a “high quality” surge protector told the customer it would not be covered under the warranty and would cost $150 to fix.
The PS3 had not been subject to any kind of power surge and it seems Sony will do anything to deny warranty service claims.
This may be a case of company policy overriding common sense.

1) Has it occurred to this guy to get his surge protector checked out?
2) Does it state in the manual not to use a surge protector with the PS3?
3) Why are you lying about Sony doing anything to get out of warranty claims when they have excellent warranty service?
If you use a surge protector and your electronic equipment experiences power problems you should contact the maker of the surge protector because they are usually liable and your use of a surge protector often voids the warranty of what you plug into it.
Lets all sit back and watch all the retarded 360 owners try and turn this into the PS3s version of the 3RROD lol.

My experience with Sony… actually with any company in acquiring warranty service save for two occasions has not been so great.

Wow! It took 11 months for me to hear about the first PS3 breaking down. Only 200,000 more and Sony will catch up to XBox360.
LOL

Sony warranty is great an the ps3 was built to last eveything is a case by case senerio, sounds like sour grapes. PS This artical makes it seem like Sony is wrong surge protectors usually have at least $10-25k warranty on them.

Actually dickheads Sony has a long history of screwing people over when it comes to warranty repairs. Just ask the people who had their PS2’s get that disk read error just days after the 90 day warranty. It happened to me twice and that is how I became an xbot after two consoles with Sony loyalty I realized hey I’m an American who likes playing American styles games over anime, long haired girly man JPRGs.

I had a PS2 with a bad tray and Sony repaired and returned the PS2 to me when it was out of warranty at no cost to me.
Surge protectors usually come with a warranty from the surge protector manufacturer. If you’re using the surge protector to power down you PS3, you’re being stupid.

If I were Sony, I’d deny the claim too, the issue would be with the Surge protector, not the PS3. Therefore, the claim should be brought to the manufacturer of the surge protector, not Sony. Looks like the writers of the article really need to read up on who’s responsible for payment in cases of accidents and or warranty responsibility. Typical Sony bashing though, take a story on heresay, don’t apply any logic to it, and report with everything but intelligence. Keep ‘em coming you morons, this shit is great to blast through when I’m on lunch break.
Note: Proud 60g PS3 owner, with absolutely no hardware or software failures/issues to date. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Sony are not in the wrong, as people sed in other posts its a surge protector problem, why should sony pay for that. i own a 360 and a ps3. There are no comparisons, the ps3 wins in every way especially reliability. Mine has been used all night every night since march with zero probs. My 1st xbox lasted 6 hours out the box and now the replacement is knackered too. Microsoft can take a run and jump with their white plastic box of nails. Ps3 is worth every penny.

As it turns out plugging a surge protector into a PS3 DOESN’T void the warranty at all.
Sony have said they have no idea why the owner thinks he has to pay $150 because he shouldn’t have been told that and they will be contacting him to sort the problem out.

360 Hardware may break but at least they do have a great warranty service. I have an elite and it runs great. The more consoles there is, the bigger the industry gets. To hate on any console is like loving the game of football but bashing the CFL because it’s not the NFL. It’s football! The wii brings more people to the culture of gaming. That’s awesome! How can you be mad at that?! It’s going from the marginal to the mainstream. Plus, I don’t own any stock in any of these companies so how much money they make doesn’t affect me directly.

Sony tried to pull something like that on me. A week ago the hdmi out stopped working on my ps3. I made sure it was my ps3 that was wrong by testing different hdmi cables on different tvs. I called sony for repair and they had the nerve to tell me the ps3 wasn’t the problem. The rep actually said that my multiple hdmi cables and tvs weren’t working properly. I thanked her for her help and then called back in few hours later. Luckily this time I talked to a competent rep who set up a repair for my ps3. Like all electronics, there is always a chance that they will break. Anybody who thinks otherwise is just too stubborn to see reality.
