PS3 sales on the up thanks to price cuts and new SKUs
By Dave Parrack
It seems that early indications are suggesting the new PS3 strategy Sony announced last week is already causing a sales surge, at least on Amazon. Sales of the 80gb model have soared on Amazon.com and the 40gb model has entered in the top 15 purely on pre-sales on Amazon Japan.
Punch Jump has compiled the sales figures for the 80gb PS3 SKU and found that is has risen 484% this morning on Amazon, just a day after the $100 price cut was announced.
The Motorstorm pack was the top sales gainer in the 24 hours since Sony launched their new two tier strategy of price cuts and entry level console packs, and ranked at number 17 for best-selling products in Amazon’s Computer & Video Games division.
Punch Jump is also reporting that in Japan, the new 40gb model of the PS3 has excited Japanese gamers enough to prompt thousands to pre order the new SKU. The forthcoming entry level model, which features no PS2 backwards compatibility and less USB ports, entered in the top 15 for pre-sales on Amazon.co.jp.
It’s not out until November 11th in Japan, but is already eliciting a sales surge for Sony’s black behemoth.
Sony certainly needed to do something to try and catch up with the Wii in Japan, which has outsold the PS3 4-1 between April and September. I didn’t expect the new model to have quite such an instant impact on sales.
The PS3 now seems to finally be on its way up, after a year of disappointing sales and average quality games. If this carries on then maybe the momentum could finally see the PS3 sell in the quantities that Sony expected after the success of the original Playstation and PS2.
With Microsoft recently introducing the new lower priced Xbox 360 Arcade and the Wii continuing to sell in huge quantities despite hardware shortages, this holiday season looks like being one of the bloodiest battles in the push for console supremacy. The winners as always are the consumers who are already seeing prices being lowered and games being bundled with consoles. Long may it continue.
