Akira Yamaoka, chief composer for Konami, has claimed in an interview that “The Wii user isn’t a hardcore user.” At a stroke, he called all Wii owners nothing more than casual gamers and upset a massive swathe of loyal Konami fans.

We all know by now that the PS3 had yet another terrible month in September, selling under 120,000 consoles in the US. But what I didn’t know was that Sony have apparently spent the last week pleading with third party developers not to abandon their console.

Everyone knows the Wii is selling like hot cakes, you’d be hard pressed to find a Wii anywhere but Nintendo is once again having trouble with third party developers. Many of the games and certainly most of the top sellers on the Wii come from Nintendo itself which could be bad, in the long run.

It seems that early indications are suggesting the new PS3 strategy Sony announced last week is already causing a sales surge, at least on Amazon. Sales of the 80gb model have soared on Amazon.com and the 40gb model has entered in the top 15 purely on pre-sales on Amazon Japan.

After rumours galore over the last few weeks, Microsoft has finally confirmed the existence and details of the new Xbox 360 Arcade pack. It’ll be priced at $279 and will be squarely aimed at the family market, currently being completely dominated by the Nintendo Wii.

As expected, Sony are launching the lower spec, lower priced PS3 in America for the holiday season, following the (assumed) success of the move in Europe. The new 40gb PS3 will go on sale on November 2nd and cost $399. The 80gb model meanwhile sees it’s price slashed from $599 to $499, the same price as the remaining 60gb stock.

A story surfaced yesterday about Sony and its supposed lack of customer service, and spread around the Internet like wild fire. A forum member had claimed that Sony had informed him his PS3 warranty had been voided the moment he plugged it in to a surge protector. Now Sony have come out and denied the dubious claim.

Yesterday, Gamer.Blorge.com reported that sales of the PS3 were up 178% in the UK but at that time it wasn’t clear if that was due to the introduction of the cheaper 40GB model or the soon to be discontinued 60GB model which is being sold with two games. It’s now been determined that the 40GB model is a certified flop.
