The Wii is carrying on its incredible stint as the must have console, and gadget of this year. Along with it, there’s a huge shortage of the Nintendo machines available, with Wiis selling out as soon as they hit the stores both in the US and UK. Will these shortages help sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360, or actively hinder them.

With popularity soaring for the Wii, new and innovative ways to use the system is the next big step to take with the console. Nintendo has already announced their version of a new shooter accessory, but it will be third party companies that will pave the way for the most interesting of accessories.

The Wii has been setting all kinds of sales records, and part of the reason is that its games appeal to the so called “casual gamers”. The recently released Mario Galaxy is yet another example of the kind of game that casual gamers can easily dip into, without needing to make a huge commitment in time or emotional energy.

A year in and Nintendo is still having problems meeting demand for its popular console. After Amazon received a shipment of 1400 Wiis, the units sold out in just 10 minutes. There is also a limit on how many Wiis one can purchase from Amazon.

Despite being the same exact game, Manhunt 2 for the Wii is labeled as being more violent due to the interactive motions of the Wiimote.

Sony are refusing to admit the failure of their proprietary Universal Media Disc (UMD) format. The discs hold games and movies for the Playstation Portable console.

Most analysts are in agreement that the Sony PS3 hasn’t sold anywhere near the expected quantities up to now. Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO disagrees however, and claims that the sales momentum is matching that which the Playstation 2 experienced in it’s early days.
