New PS3 adverts unveiled - Enough to beat Wii and Xbox 360?
By Dave Parrack
Sony have unveiled two of their new TV adverts for the PS3. The campaign is being centred on pushing the advantages of the PS3 over it’s console rivals the Wii and Xbox 360, but will this new marketing drive be enough to increase poor sales?
Sales of the PS3 have been consistently lower than both the Xbox 360 and Wii, and also often below the PS2, it’s seven year old prequel. So with the holiday season upon us, and Christmas just around the corner, Sony needed to come up with something amazing to persuade us all to part with our hard earned cash.
Peter Dille, the senior vice president for marketing, revealed the new campaign and the thoughts behind it on the official Playstation blog:
“We wanted to move beyond the “power” message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand.”
“And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you’ll also see a big focus behind the PS3’s Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you’ll see a major focus behind the PLAYSTATION Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PLAYSTATION Store, as well as breakthrough services like Home.”
That all sounds good in theory, but how do the adverts look in reality. You can check out the first two 60 second adverts on the Playstation blog, and let us know what you think via the comments.
They’re both very nicely made, following on from the online advertising campaign which began in earnest last month. I must admit to being impressed, and the style of showing the PS3 as an all encompassing games machine and entertainment hub could finally help get the message across that so far has been failing to seep in to consumers minds.
I do have some concerns that there may be too much information on screen, especially in such a short space of time, and that it will confuse parents and potential buyers at the more casual end of the spectrum. But most people know about the PS3 and what it can do, and those are the ones who may be enticed by the gorgeous graphics and line up of first party exclusives due on the machine over the next year.
And the price cut has got to help too, with Sony finally showing their intelligence by making that a key part of the advert. The PS3 is finally cheap enough for normal gamers to afford, but will the combination of a fair price and a fancy advertising campaign truly be enough to leapfrog the Xbox 360 and replace the Wii at the top of the sales charts?

The PS2 is also outselling the 360. Only a complete retard would try and make that into a bad thing for Sony. Because of the PS2 Sony’s install base and market share is growing at a faster rate than Microsoft’s. A lot of those PS2 buyers are going to play games like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, God of war and Gran Turismo and the only console that has the next games in those franchises is the PS3.
Just think abut that for a second. Imagine how fantastic it would be for Microsoft if they were still selling millions of Xboxes every year with loads of new gamers getting into Halo and Project Gotham. That would obviously pay dividends in the future the same as the continued success of the PS2 will for the PS3.

I’m not a complete retard, but you have made a valid point. It’s actually one I’ve touched in other articles.
It really does depend though whether those PS2 owners do jump ship and buy a PS3 for the likes of MGS3 and GT5, or whether they just sit, content with their PS2s and a copy of the last iteration of the franchises you mention.
I don’t think anyone can be sure that they’ll automatically buy a PS3.

I’m not a fanboy so i will just express my opinion ON THE ARTICLE unlike others who use the forums to insult people who dont think like them.
To beat XBOX and Wii Ps3 needs… eheem… GAMES is it called?
The truth is that PS brand in this gen doesnt have the impact it had before whene it enjoyed exclusive games with the likes of GTA , Final Fantasy ect. But now most games are multi platform.
Taking that into acount:
+ 360 owners (like me) wont be running to buy a new system
wich doesnt offer much advantages in gaming termns.
+PS2 owners may be witing for great games to come out
+wii owners are mostly a diferent market.
Last i wanna add .Can’t we all just get along? There can be more thant one succesfull company in this biz (both Nintedo and XBX are making profits in there respective markets and PS2 still selling very well). They just have to get theyre buisnes right. And in the end they will not give you nothing for calling a fellow gamer a retard or the likes. neoheadcrusher@yahoo.com
