PS3 catching up with Wii in Japanese console sales
The PS3 is finally gaining some ground in the console sales battle in Japan. The latest sales figures out show that although the Wii is still the console of choice amongst Japanese gamers, the PS3 is slowly but surely catching up.
Reuters are reporting that in the four weeks up to October 28th, the Wii outsold the PS3 2 to 1 but the lead the Nintendo console holds has now been reduced for four months in a row.
“Nintendo sold 110,415 units of the Wii in the four weeks to October 28, compared with 47,183 units of the PS3″
Back in June, the Wii was outselling the PS3 6 to 1, but that has gradually been narrowing ever since. A series of price cuts and exclusive game releases, sorely lacking from the PS3’s launch, is now revitalising interest and making Japanese gamers start to take notice.
The question is whether this change in Sony’s fortunes will filter out to the USA and Europe or stay a purely Japanese affair. With Sony’s recent admittance of their games division losing $841 million over the last three months, something needed to happen to revitalise the company’s fortunes.
As for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, well it’s not really worth writing home about but for those who are interested, the console sold 18,717 units in Japan over the same period, putting it in a very definite third.
