New PS3 not backwards compatible, so buy a new PS2. Again.
Playing on the strength of a hugely successful library of games, Sony has announced plans to release a compact cut-price PS2 in 2008.
The new model, reported by MCV, will boast an integrated power supply and a twenty percent drop in price – thereby making it the exact opposite of the Playstation 3.
The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that the new PS3 model will not support PS2 games (as we reported earlier). This makes it pretty clear that Sony don’t have a clue what they hell they’re doing, or that if they do have an overall strategy then it’s "suck as much money out of our loyal fans as humanly possible".
The non-backwards compatible PS3 is clearly designed to boost the dismal sales of titles exclusive to the system, despite that having to force your customers to buy the games indicates a deeper problem. When that means preventing them from accessing the huge and well respected PS2 games library, that’s bad. When you then release another product depending exclusively on the same library, that’s downright psychotic.
This puts developers in an awkward position – does Sony support PS2 games at all? Will Sony create further obstacles for those whose only crime is wanting to make games for a system people love, instead of the incredibly labour-intensive one that not many people have?
Any business can fail if it treats its customers with disrespect, especially an entertainment company, and double-especially when they shoot past ‘disrespect’ and into "We’ve crippled our expensive new product, and released a new separate product that you have to buy as well!"

Luke McKinney what the hell are you talking about? Are you smoking crack as you sit in your little cubicle writing about two month old debates? Did anyone ask for your biased opinion on Sony’s marketing plans? Or does anyone care what you think on this issue? Ummm no, so go finish off your boss and keep your opinion’s to your self. Why not keep a system thats still selling well after 7 years of market domination in the game? The PS2 is still competing with the next gen consoles, has a 120 million worldwide install base, and still getting games to keep it alive. And I can almost guarantee that after the ps2’s life is gone, Sony will have a firmware update that brings the thousands of ps2 titles to PS. So after you finish off Bill, swallow that and quit writing about crap no one cares about. Im going to play some Bioshock.

“This makes it pretty clear that Sony don’t have a clue what they hell they’re doing”
They have sold over 120m PS2s so its clear that they do. They have sold more home consoles in 13 years than Nintendo have in 30 so Sony know what they are doing better than anyone else in the business. The PS1 was on sale for 12 years for f**ks sake. How could a company that’s as clueless as so many (360 owning) people think achieve that?
Every new PS2 that is sold is another person buying into the Sony gaming brand and getting into their exclusive games like Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Jak & Daxter & Metal Gear Solid. If the PS2 were not on sale any longer then more people would be buying Wii’s and 360’s as well as PS3’s.

Oh yeah and heres a good list of the upcoming PS3 titles, a good amount are exclusive… http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html

“….so buy a new PS2. Again.” — why buy again? Why not just use your old PS2?
Microsoft propaganda at it’s best.
November 4th, 2007
Luke, you show your utter ignorance, and fanboy MS loving. If you didn’t know, the PS2 has NEW markets in eastern europe (where they pretty much hate anything american) and in China/India. These areas are selling HUGE amounts of PS2’s, so why wouldn’t you continue to improve costs by product improvements? Why are you so ignorant Luke? Its not like MS has an Xbox line still selling, all those nuggets were forced to upgrade or go buy a Wii.
How you can chastise Sony for choosing to make money off a product that has 160 new titles only the way for it, makes no sense at all – yes, 160 titles due for the PS2 in the next 12 months. Hardly sounds like a dead machine does it?

Come on, We are tired of the viral campaign that microsoft has begun with stupid blogs and title like this. I wouldnt be surprised if you were a Microsft Employee. Microsoft has pull all the stunts this next gen to stop Sony’s Ps3 from becoming number 1. This is rediculous you need stop your little ignorance or keep collecting your paycheck and posting crap. First it was the price is too high, no games, over heating which is proven to be false, all this false advertisement is what’s causing the Ps3 to be behind. You need to admit it that you are just an xbox fanboy.
November 4th, 2007
The Xbox 360 is the real dead machine. Yeah Microsoft extended the warranty but as far as that goes all the consoles made from 2005 – 2007 are bound to die due to overheating by showing the Ring of Death. Many customers will be sending their console to microsoft as time progresses. All the media loves bashing the Ps3 lately is like a common thing this days. Instead of staying out of the bias and posting fare non bias crap. I wouldnt really be shocked if you were getting paid to be bash the Ps3. Sony needs to do an investigation.

most people who want a ps3 already have a ps2, and that one guy who doesn’t can drop another hundo for the backwards compatible version. sony knows exactly what they are doing, making the best machine they can, not rushing an unreliable product out as fast as they can to get a jump start on the next gen race. xbox has more must own games out now(2-3), but nothing on the horizon. by the time ps3 has been out as long as 360 has been now, the 360
will look antiquated. whats going to compete with mgs4, little big planet or killzone 2? halo 3 is just gonna keep on rockin’, right? halo 3 is no different than the first two. when there were no decent fpses on consoles, halo was something, now its just another lame rehash, for gods sake Black is better than that gaytarded feces. ms just bribes companies to short sony and thinks that can put them on top. i cant wait to see someone outdo playstation and blow my mind, but microsoft isn’t innovative, just arrogant. ill place my bets on apple to make the console that kills ps4 and xbox:project irrelevance, or whatever they call it.

Has anyone told this idiot, that if you want PS2 backwards compatability, you can buy the 60GB/80GB (in the US) or 60GB in Europe?
Seems Sony has given the consumers choice, cheap price, and no PS2BC, or a slightly higher price, and extra goodies (the PS3-Gti), but this idiot wants BOTH.
Don’t try and tell us that the 60GB/80GB versions are being run down, and when they are gone, all that will remain, is non-PS2 40GB models, as you have to be a total idiot to thinkt that Sony don’t want to get as high a price as possible for the PS3, so there will definately be a high-end model to replace the 60GB/80GB when stocks are low.

According to a couple of interviews with heads of sony before the PS3 was release they bragged about being able to bring 100 percent backward compatiblity to the PS3 where as M$ could not. Funny how important it was to them then. Now they’re on record as saying “people don’t want backward compatibility”. To me that’s a pretty important feature. So now if I want to buy a 400 dollar PS3, I can’t play older psone or two games and I’ll probably have to buy HDTV cables too? God I miss the days when new consoles could be had at around $200. If i wasn’t turned off by nintendo’s new controls I’d say they were the only console maker I could turn to. M$ console is okay but the only reason I used to own one was to only to play Halo3. Well at least I have my over priced computer and video card.

Alright, listen here ya filthy Canuck! It’s “labor” not “labour” and when you put together an article make sure you proof it before you post it. “This makes it pretty clear that Sony don’t have a clue what they hell they’re doing,” I can tell fancy French is your first language because you can’t put together a competent sentence to save your life. “what they hell”…come on, at least try. And if you’re gonna try talkin’ jive you’ve gotta start your sentence out with “Sony don’t have a clue” and not all your other ramblings. Now for why you shouldn’t give anyone your opinion on the Playstation 3. Oh my god Sony made yet another SKU of the PS3 and it doesn’t allow you to play old PS2 games. Did it ever occur to you that it wasn’t bundled with your fat zit faced ass in mind? I look at this and I see my 42 year old brother looking for a blu-ray player at an affordable cost. He doesn’t care that it doesn’t play PS2 games, and his kids are stoked that they get a PS3. And your sitting with dick in hand saying, “but it’s a gaming unit”. When you bundle it with Spider Man 3, my spidey sense tells me they’re going after the high def movie audience. Buyers reap the extra benefits of a gaming machine, not the other way around. Stick to pimping the XBox and do yourself a favor and take a marketing class.

hey MS lick ass!!!
everybody has a ps2 u idiot.

Great article! Im getting the feeling Sony is actually wants people to buy and use a ps2 instead of a ps3. The fact is that Sony are removing features on the ps3 and bringing out ‘newer’ ps2 seems to confirm it.
Maybe when playstation 3 parts drops in 10 years time, Sony might say look we stopped making ps2 but ps3’s now have full backwards compatibility for ps2. When that happens I might actually get a ps3.

[...] Worse, they’re threatening to cripple their own products to ensure it. According to a recent article by gamesindustry.biz “full titles won’t necessarily include all content found on the corresponding retail UMD”. This wouldn’t be the first time Sony have schizophrenically sabotaged on of their own divisions to make a graph in another department go the way they want it (such as the recent backwards-incompatible PS3). [...]

Hey, Bell. Fuck you, you piece of intolerant shit. Thanks for insulting my country.
June 6th, 2008
Uh, Bell….. before you go criticizing someone’s spelling you should maybe do your research and then make an educated statement.
In Canada labor is spelled “labour”. And favor is spelled “favour”, and neighbor is spelled “neighbour” and color is spelled “colour”, etc…..
He didn’t spell it wrong at all. (Seriously….If you want to play that game we could say that YOU spelled it wrong…. but in reality, either way is correct). There are more countries in the world than just yours ya know. Stop being so self centered and maybe poke your head out into the rest of the world for once and maybe get yourself a little more cultured.
But judging from the unnecessary rudeness and insulting post, I suppose we can pretty much expect that not to happen anytime soon.
How sad that anything that you may have said that may have been remotely important was lost on your audience because all they will remember is the insults.
And since you most likely won’t broaden your horizens on your own I will just point out one more thing….. French is not Canada’s first language. It is the first language of only one of our provinces (Quebec). All the other provinces have English as their first language. As a matter of fact, there are a great many Canadians that do not even know how to speak french.
September 4th, 2008
Tsk tsk Bell… It isn’t only the ‘Canucks’ who spell ‘Labor’ as ‘Labour’… in fact, the rest of the English-speaking world does too. NZ, AUS, CAN, UK… Americans speak American, and they seem to avoid using adverbs where ever possible.
Then again… Bell is never going to read these replies anyway. I see Bell’s point, which is a good one. But seriously, none of us should ridicule another for mispelling a word here or there, or for not using correct grammar. It isn’t our fault. The English language has changed and diluted over time.
Our grammar rules are embarrassingly absent or simple (excepting the rule of exception), compared with other languages, and yet we have the largest vocabulary of any other language in the world.

[...] In its infinite wisdom, Nintendo decided to make the Wii fully backwards compatible, so that every last-gen Gamecube game works on the current-gen machine. Sony did the same with the PS3 before it realised that would lose them money as no-one would then buy a PS2. [...]

Don’t case about this spelling debate but i got ps3 and was looking forward to retro gaming as my collection was pretty good but some games don’t work. And i don’t mean the bad ones. Like final fantasy 8! 7 and 9 worked. Whats this about. The playstations biggest franchise and they don’t make sure they work. I’m dam annoyed now. Gave my old ps2 to a charity raffle… Gutted.

okay, i have a ps2 and i have alot of games for it. if i ever get a ps3 it should be backwords compatable. i mean like the wii is backwords compatable, the 360 is? so why is sony trying to squeeze all the money out of us? they are the only next gen system that does this? i mean if the price wasent enough they want to talk out the backwords compatibility. which i dont care what anyone else says, thats one of the reasons why people buy the next-gen systems. thats why i upgraded to ps2 after the ps1, and same with the gamecube to the wii. so i dont get what they are thinking by doing this…they’ll lose customers for this.
