God of War goes Halo: Does the PS3 have a game at last?
Sony has confirmed that God of War 3 will be released on the Playstation 3. If you find that in any way unexpected or surprising, then please be warned that the ocean is pretty wet. And that fire stuff burns.
This is the news that fans (and desperate Sony executive who spend all day looking at hardware sales figures) have been waiting for, a flagship title putting a popular face on PS3 gaming that isn’t the distant promise of Solid Snake. It’s perhaps a little tiny bit later than flagship titles need to be, announced a mere year after the console release, but better late than never.
It’s clear that Sony hopes this can do for their box what Master Chief did for the XBox 360: a must-have title that fans obsess over for months, waiting in line overnight to snap up the disc in special limited edition super expensive boxes. God of War might not have the genre-defining multiplayer combat, or the record-breaking sales history, or the sheer level of online love (Red vs Blue, anyone?) of Halo, but that Colossus battle in GOW 2 was pretty sweet, right?
The PS3 desperately needs titles like this, popular franchises that can fans can rally behind in the interminable (and retarded) “Who’s the best” battles that rage online day and night. The original Sony launch title, which was apparently the Spiderman 3 DVD in slightly higher definition, failed to truly rally people to the cause because
- It’s not actually a “game”
- The extra pixels of screen resolution fail to prevent Peter Parker from being a whiny little girl
But Kratos fans should advance with caution – he might be the only recognisable face from the earlier games arriving on the next generation. Gamespot reports that both creative director David Jaffe and director Cory Barlog (aka “the people who actually in charge of making the games good”) have left Sony, and it remains to be seen how the series will fare without them.
Everyone should be happy to see the return of Kratos, especially to a console capable of rendering the truly stunning set-pieces for which the God of War series is rightly famous. We can only hope that those left of the development team can do it justice.

Mike, we usually tell the story using facts, and then add opinion to it.
Would you rather have Blorge be a dry and dull news aggregator?
