PS3 warranty is voided by dust if the repair center technician says so
In the second of what is no doubt going to be many rounds with Sony, one PS3 owner is having a not so good time in dealing with Sony and getting his PS3 repaired because of too much dust.
Gamer.Blorge.com reported on the first part of this and now the second part is coming to full blossom over on The Consumerist and this time it is complete with an audio file of the call to Sony support.
It comes down to the fact that while there is nothing in the manual about dust collection voiding the PS3 warranty, the technicians at the repair center declared that there was too much dust in the unit and it was enough to void the warranty.
According to the service call notes, the technician(s) that examined the PS3 determined that there was so much dust it would be a health risk to perform repairs on it. I guess they never heard of wearing a mask.
At the very beginning of the call, the service rep said it did not void the warranty but after reading notes in the file the technicians can apparently decide what “neglect” is on a whim and it may include leaving the PS3 in your entertainment center and as we all know, entertainment centers and the devices in them, collect dust.
Well, Sony, what’s going on, is it or isn’t under warranty? Every other sane person on the planet seems to think so, including our very own staff.

“Every other sane person on the planet seems to think so, including our very own staff.”
None of whom are trained to repair them or have even seen the item in question.
Idiots. You have no idea what the state of this console was. All you have is some whiny little bitch complaining. The fact that we have never heard of another case like this must tell you that this is an extreme case.
Its funny that 360’s are still dropping like flies yet you are concentrating on one PS3 that sounds like it has failed due to owner neglect.
When I said funny I actually meant pathetic.

If you read the manual it clearly says:
“Do not place the system in an area subject to excessive dust or cigarette smoke”
It also says:
“Do not allow dust to build up on the vents”
So it not only warns you to be aware of the problem of dust but it tells you to ensure that dust doesnt build up over time. If he has sent the console back full of dust then he has obviously not looked after it. There is no grey area here. If it is full of dust he is in the wrong.

Glad to see everyone attitude is so Good on the subject (exactly how many bashers and skeptics exist on the internet the world may never know)
This was my PS3, i cleaned off the vents when they got dust, the “offending dust” was in the USB ports and the MMC reader slots. THIS IS NOT somewhere i am comfortable Q-tipping around inside of!
One rep said that you could use a low power vaccum, But said on the vents, not on the ports. And another rep told me that vacuums were actually quite dangerous and i should use them carefully because if i use a too high power vacuum it could rip parts off the board….
Thanks for your help, I really do believe any sane person in my situation would be outraged. Especially considering that the staff of ps3 tech support in almost every case confirmed that it was not in the warranty, and only after i was transferred to a supervisor or multiple supervisors did they say anything about a dusty console voiding the warranty.

Hey if sony can get some better games he probably would take care of it if I didnt have any games for my system I would leave it there to get dust up. Sony is going to have more problems like this if they dont make there console better. And to bring up the xbox 360 dropping like flys wow at least it has the best warranty and even know it has problems its still selling so dont put oh the 360 is dropping like flys when you know people are dedicated to buy the 360 even on the rrod issue. Just relize the xbox 360 is the must have console and that is all that there is. Oh and owner neglect, well dont blame the owner when you know sony made a vacume. Hey I think I know how sony can fix this they should put a feather duster in there ps3 boxes free of charge maybe that will sell the system lol.

wow….
considering the circumstances, I would think PS3 owners would rant about it a bit more since the warranty for this guys PS3 is the same one that looks after the PS3 sitting in their own homes.
But if they are going to defend sony for not repairing it under warranty….then I hope when its there turn to fix there own PS3, they get the big “VOIDED WARRANTY” from the Technicians.
Personal experience tells me that if a corporation doesnt have to help you, They wont… So if I had a PS3, and a Warranty, Id personally be concerned at how loosely they can apply “customer neglect” clauses to machines under warranty

The PS3 reliability is brilliant and Sony’s customer care is also top notch. This is an isolated case of consumer neglect, nothing else.
It’s ridiculous that people are tring to spin this into a big story.

That doesn’t look like normal dust. Perhaps that guy must been rehabbing his house and forgot the PS3 was still there. If that is normal dust in someone’s house, trying to argue about the warranty for the PS3 should be the least of their concerns as they are most likely going to have health problems very soon, if not already.

Funny, I had a similar problem with my sony camcorder last year, they refused to repair it under warranty because they said it was dusty/dirty and warranty voided. I wound up throwing out the piece of s**t and I’ll never buy another sony product. I also reported them to the BBB for whatever good that does.

Well this is a concern since I own one of these and have noticed dust collecting in all the areas that everyone seems to be talking about.
Even before these postings I do have a lambswool duster sitting next to the PS3 and my HD TV and dust the thing a few times a week.
Again at the same time I have noticed dust buildup on the vents and the USB ports. So what is the answer? I live in a several hundred thousand dollar house not a barn, I am sure this thing is sucking in dust just because the fan or motor is running. I have not had a bit of trouble with it and I am glad I didn’t get the 360 because of all the trouble they are having??
I spent 100.00 not 30.00 not 50.00 but a 100.00 for the extended warranty for 2 years on a 499.00 purchase. I was told any problems ( I hope dust included) I can bring it back no questions asked and get a new one. Well who only knows? I’ll keep dusting it but I don’t live or play this in a sterile enviorment.
Sony I hope you guys comment on these issues I don’t want to hear some song and dance story when I do have a problem with my unit. Thanks.

When the pictures of the PS3 surfaced it should have raised suspicions in everyone especially when you remember that its been proved that the guy lied about how old the console was, how he looked after it and where it came from.
The fact that its now been revealed that he is an actor just reinforces my belief that this story is an organised smear campaign.
