Wii love Mario (because we don’t have third party titles like the Xbox 360)

November 12, 2007

wii love mario (because we don't have third party titles like the Xbox 360) Getting a game into the top ten for any system is great news.  Getting all ten is an achievement.  Getting all ten with different variations on a single first-party character is a sign of a serious lack of support.

Today IGN’s top ten Wii titles were entirely Mario based, from the incredibly anticipated Galaxy to the retro hits Super Mario 3.  (And even retro not-so-hits like Mario 64).  Because these things change, an image originally saved by flickr-user thepaveway can be found here.

All very flattering for a certain Italian plumber, but when even virtual console ports of nineteen year old games are in a top spot, there may be a slight lack of competition.

Not that this will severely affect the bulk of Wii users, the casual gamers who wouldn’t recognise Master Chief and Gordon Freeman if they threw down in the (ultimate) mano-a-mano battle right in front of them.  But the more serious players might be feeling a slight lack of variety.

A real signpost of modern gaming is how the number one game isn’t actually released yet, the most popular thing on the system not one customers have actually ‘played’.  It seems we’re getting more used to looking forward to games then actually having them (isn’t that right, Solid Snake PS3 fans?)

Both the Wii and the PS3 have future games to look forward to, with developers finally getting a handle on each systems unique properties, but they’ll both have an awful lot of Xbox titles to compete with.

You lost any credibility by calling Mario 64 “retro not-so-hit”.

What a nut, try checking out Super Mario Galaxy’s Reviews all over the net. The only problem with the Wii is those “important” 3rd party developers trying to cash in on innocent gamers with 3rd rate software, and the hardcore gamers not giving good games a chance unless they have tons of blood and gore. What about games providing a form of escape from reality (there’s plenty of violence in the real world).

When citing a source on the internet, one should really include a link. I’m not sure that there even is a list since you didn’t provide a link. Bad journalism buddy.

    You think Blorge is journalism?

Ha, Ha this Gamer blorge site is so biased against the Wii, its not even funny. This site has no credibility at all. There are many good 3rd party titles available on the Wii, such as Eledees, FIFA 08, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Super Monkey Ball, Resident Evil 4, Guitar Hero 3 and many more. Add to that the many good Nintendo games & you have a good great console that is fun for everyone with many more games coming due to the sales success of the Wii. Many more 3rd party games are being developed or ported to the console. Ive owned an Xbox 360 untill i purchased a Wii. Thereafter i almost never played the Xbox 360 (so i sold it & put the money towards more Wii games) as it jusnt hasnt got the same fun factor as the Wii.

According to VG Chartz, Super Mario 64 sold more copies than any single XBOX or XBOX 360 game has ever sold (http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&console=&publisher=&sort=Total) and you call it a “not-so-hit”?

I’m not saying that there are no good games on those platforms, but you can’t dismiss one of the greatest games/franchises of all time, just like that. Perhaps one day great games like Halo3 can live up to it in sales, but don’t take your personal issues with this system/game get in the way of your reporting.

Wow, that was truly funny. Great satire….that was satire right? No? Oooooooh….

Where to start. How about with the main premise of this “article”, that Mario games making up the top 10 most popular games on IGN is a sign of trouble. Considering the fact that Super Mario Galaxy is one of the most anticipated (and best) games of the year it is no surprise that it would make the top spot mere days before its launch. People would be reading previews and looking for reviews, watching videos and looking at all the screenshots to get excited for the release of this colossal game. Halo 3 was at number one before its launch too, does it matter? Not to any sane, rational person.

Now, why were all of those other Mario games on there? Because people were looking into them. Two of them had just be released on Virtual Console days prior and reviews were coming out. Also, anyone who did a search for Mario would be provided with links to all of the previous articles about these classic games (classic does indeed include the 11 million copy selling Super Mario 64, which most reasonable gaming “journalists” consider one of the finest gaming creations of all time). I know that when I was searching for information on Halo 3 and came across random articles about 1 and 2 I would occasionally peruse them as well.

And of course we then come to the fact that you had to provide an image to prove that it even happened. Why did you have to do this? Because, as you said, it changes so often. At this very moment Mario is number two (behind Umbrella Chronicles, an M-rated exclusive title) and there is no other Mario title to be found.

Your “argument” fails on so many levels that I could go on for pages, but I feel as though I, and the other commenters here have thrashed you enough to make you realize that before you post an obviously fanboyish “article” you should reread it and then delete it from your harddrive lest some rational person were to read it and think any less of you than they already do.
